An automotive lift motor doesn’t get much attention until the day it stops pulling smoothly, and for a lot of collector-car owners around the Iowa Great Lakes region, that first year of ownership is when you actually learn what you bought. We installed a two-post lift for a retired farmer-turned-collector near Okoboji last spring who wanted a place to rotate three vehicles through storage and run his own transmission service between road trips. He didn’t know much about hydraulic units versus AC motors going in. By month eleven, he knew more about his lift’s motor than most shop owners do, and that’s the story we want to walk through here.

Install Day: What We Checked Before Power Ever Touched the Motor

Before we ever energized anything, we walked him through what actually drives a two-post lift: a power unit with a motor, a pump, and a reservoir, all working together to move hydraulic fluid into the cylinders. The automotive lift motor itself is usually the simplest-looking part of the whole system, but it’s also the part that takes the most abuse over time because it’s the thing doing electrical-to-mechanical work every single cycle. We checked voltage compatibility with his garage wiring, confirmed the motor’s horsepower and RPM rating matched the pump it was paired to, and made sure the thermal overload protection was wired correctly.

For a collector storing vehicles that don’t move often, that overload protection matters more than most people realize. A garage that sits at fifty degrees in January and eighty-five in July puts thermal stress on a motor that a heated commercial shop never sees. We spent extra time on that inspection specifically because his usage pattern — long idle stretches followed by short, heavy-load lifts — is exactly the pattern that burns out motors that weren’t sized or protected correctly from day one.

Month Three: First Real Load, First Real Noise

The first time he loaded a full-size sedan onto the lift for an oil change, the motor ran a little louder than he expected and he called us worried something was wrong. It wasn’t. New automotive lift motor units often run slightly louder for the first few dozen cycles as brushes and bearings seat in, and that’s normal on almost every brand we install. What we told him to listen for instead was any change in pitch mid-lift, any humming that didn’t resolve into a normal running sound, or smoke — none of which he had.

We used that call as a teaching moment about the difference between normal break-in noise and failure noise. A motor that hums for a few seconds and then catches is very different from one that hums continuously without ever engaging the pump properly. The second pattern usually means a capacitor issue or a seized bearing, and it’s worth a phone call before you keep cycling the lift. He didn’t have that problem, but knowing the difference saved him from panic-calling us every time the lift made a sound for the rest of the year.

Transmission Service Day: Putting the Lift to Real Work

By month seven he was ready to pull the transmission on a project car himself, which meant sustained load, a slow controlled lower, and repeated cycling over a few hours rather than one quick lift-and-drop. This is where an automotive lift motor earns its keep or doesn’t. Transmission work often means holding a vehicle at a working height for extended periods while you’re underneath it, and the motor isn’t running continuously during that hold — but it needs to respond instantly and smoothly every time you bump the lift switch to reposition.

He noticed the motor cycled on and off cleanly every time without hesitation, which told us the power unit was matched correctly to his lift’s cylinder size and weight rating. That responsiveness is something people don’t think about when they’re shopping for a lift, but it’s directly tied to whether the motor and pump combination was sized right for the application. A collector doing occasional transmission service doesn’t need a heavy-duty commercial motor, but they do need one sized correctly for the vehicle weights they’re actually working with, not just the lift’s maximum rated capacity.

Brand History: Why We Point Collectors Toward Certain Names

We install and service Rotary and Challenger lifts for commercial accounts, and BendPak and Atlas for home and collector garages, and there’s a reason for that split. Rotary’s engineering history goes back decades in the lift industry, and their motor and pump assemblies have a long track record of parts availability, which matters enormously when something fails five or ten years down the road. BendPak and Atlas built their reputation specifically around the home-garage and collector market, with motor components sized appropriately for lighter, less frequent duty cycles rather than all-day commercial use.

For this particular collector, we recommended a BendPak-based setup precisely because his use case — occasional heavy lifts, long idle periods, transmission service a few times a year — matched what that motor and pump combination was actually engineered for. Choosing the wrong brand history for your use case is one of the most common mistakes we see, whether that’s someone buying a commercial-grade automotive lift motor for light home use and overpaying, or someone buying underpowered home equipment and running it like a shop.

The Parts Pipeline: Why Availability Matters More Than Price

Somewhere around month nine, a friend of his tried to source a cheaper replacement motor online for a similar lift and discovered the part had been discontinued with no direct cross-reference available. That’s the risk of buying based on price alone without checking the parts pipeline behind the brand. We walked our collector through what to keep on hand versus what to order as-needed: spare relays and contactors are cheap enough to stock, while the motor itself is usually a call-when-needed part unless you’re running a lift daily. Having a known parts pipeline, and a supplier who actually answers the phone, turned out to be worth more to him than the few dollars he might have saved buying an off-brand motor with no support behind it.

First Service, One Year In: What We Actually Found

At the twelve-month mark we came back out to do a full inspection — cables, hydraulics, and the automotive lift motor itself. Everything checked out clean. No unusual heat signatures, no wear on the brushes beyond normal, no play in the mounting bolts. That’s a good outcome, but it’s also exactly what you’d expect from correctly sized equipment installed correctly and used within its intended duty cycle, which is the whole point of getting the brand and sizing right in year one.

We use these annual visits to check things an owner usually can’t see themselves: motor mount tightness, wiring insulation condition, and whether the thermal protection has ever tripped since install. For a collector who might only cycle the lift a few dozen times a year, catching small issues early is cheap; catching them after a motor has already started smoking is not. That’s the entire argument for scheduled service instead of waiting for something to fail.

What We’d Tell Anyone Buying Their First Lift Around the Great Lakes Region

If you’re storing collector vehicles in a garage that swings through Iowa’s full seasonal temperature range, size your automotive lift motor and power unit to your actual use pattern, not just your budget or your vehicle’s curb weight. Ask about thermal protection specifically, since idle-then-load cycles are harder on motors than steady commercial use. And ask your installer what happens if the motor fails in year six — not year one, when everything’s still under warranty, but year six, when the real test of a parts pipeline happens.

Our collector’s first year went about as smoothly as a first year can go, and most of that comes down to matching the equipment to the use case before install day rather than fixing it after. We’d rather have that conversation up front with every customer than get the call that starts with smoke coming out of a motor housing, because we’ve had that call too, and it’s never a fun one to take.
