We’ve fielded more than one call that started with “the motor got hot, then it made a loud humming noise, then it started smoking.” That’s a textbook failure sequence, and by the time smoke shows up, the motor is usually already seized or the windings are cooked. A hot motor housing after normal use is a warning sign, not something to push through by running the lift once more.
Humming without lifting means the motor is trying to turn but something downstream is binding — a stuck check valve, a seized pump, or, in worse cases, an internally shorted motor. If you smell burning insulation or see smoke, cut power immediately and don’t try to cycle the lift again. Continuing to run a motor in that state risks not just the motor itself but the wiring feeding it, and in a home garage that’s a fire risk you don’t want to gamble on.
Choosing the Right Lift Type for a Home Fluid-Service Bay
For an owner focused on oil changes and fluid work rather than frame-off restoration, a 2-post lift is usually the better fit than a 4-post — it gives full underside access for drain plugs, filters, and skid plates without ramps in the way. A 4-post makes more sense if you’re also using the bay for storage or alignment-adjacent work.

What We Changed in the Bay After the Fact
Beyond the electrical rework, we ended up relocating the lift six inches to give clearance for the motor’s power unit housing, since the original slab layout didn’t account for service access to the motor and pump. That’s a detail a lot of DIY planners miss — you need room to open the power unit cover and pull the motor without moving the whole lift.
We also added a simple disconnect switch near the bay entrance so the owner could kill power to the automotive lift motor without walking to the breaker panel, which matters if you ever get the hum-then-smoke sequence we described earlier.
