We get this call more than you’d think: a European-marque specialty shop in the Des Moines metro installs a two-post lift for wheel bearing service, the automotive lift motor starts humming or running hot within the first few months, and the shop owner immediately blames the concrete. “Is our slab too thin? Do we need more rebar?” Almost never. Slab thickness matters for anchor pull-out and post stability, but it has nothing to do with why a motor overheats, hums, or smokes. Myth #1: A Thin Slab Causes Motor Overheating

This is the single most common misconception we hear from wheel bearing service shops. A slab that’s too thin, lacks rebar, or wasn’t poured to the lift manufacturer’s PSI spec will absolutely cause anchor bolts to pull loose, posts to rock, or columns to crack the surrounding concrete over time. That is a real and serious structural problem. But the automotive lift motor sits on top of the power unit, wired into your building’s electrical circuit, completely separate from the slab beneath the posts. Heat in a motor comes from electrical resistance, duty cycle, and voltage problems, not from what’s under the concrete.

We’ve walked into Des Moines metro bays where the slab was textbook-perfect, four inches of 3,500 PSI concrete with rebar on 18-inch centers, and the motor was still smoking because someone wired it on an undersized breaker. A 3 horsepower, 3300 RPM motor pulling around 21 amps is not a drop-in replacement for a smaller unit rated differently, even if the mounting bolts happen to line up. It is a motor that was already failing internally, likely from worn bearings, winding damage, or a capacitor problem, and the hum is the motor straining against something mechanical inside it that it can no longer overcome.

If your automotive lift motor was hot the day before and someone still ran it, that’s your warning sign, not your slab. In a wheel bearing bay where techs are in and out constantly, it’s tempting to keep using a lift that’s acting slightly off because the schedule is packed. We’d rather get a call before it smokes than after. Once a motor seizes and gets pushed anyway, you’re not looking at a simple part swap anymore, you may also need to check the pump, valve body, and wiring for collateral damage from the electrical fault.

Voltage and Wiring: The Real Culprits in Iowa Shops

Duty Cycle Matters More Than Concrete for Wheel Bearing Bays

Wheel bearing service is uniquely hard on a lift motor compared to general repair work. Techs are lifting and lowering repeatedly to swap tools, check clearance, and reposition, sometimes dozens of cycles in a single job. That duty cycle adds up fast and is a far bigger factor in motor lifespan than slab quality ever will be. A motor rated for occasional use in a light-duty home garage lift will wear out much faster in a high-cycle European-marque specialty bay than the same motor would in a shop doing oil changes all day.

A cheaper motor might handle occasional use fine but cook itself within a year under constant cycling. How to Diagnose Before You Blame the Slab

Next time an automotive lift motor starts humming, running hot, or acting sluggish, walk through the electrical side before you ever think about the concrete. Check the breaker size and condition, verify actual voltage at the disconnect under load, inspect the motor’s capacitor if it’s single phase, and listen for grinding or seizing sounds distinct from a clean hydraulic hum. If the motor smells hot or shows any sign of smoke, kill power immediately and don’t run it again, even for one more lift.

We also recommend checking your maintenance log. If nobody’s greased the chains, checked hydraulic fluid, or inspected the motor mount bolts in the last year, that neglect is a far more likely cause of a struggling motor than your slab ever was. Slab problems show up as cracking, post movement, or anchor bolts backing out, not as motor humming or smoking. Once you’ve ruled out the electrical and mechanical side, if you still think your slab is a concern for a future install, that’s a separate conversation worth having with an installer before pouring, not a diagnosis for a motor that’s already failing.

When It’s Time to Replace, Not Repair

Once a motor has smoked, burned, or seized, it’s done. There’s no rewind or repair that makes sense financially compared to a proper replacement matched to your lift’s serial number, voltage, and duty cycle. We see shops try to nurse a burned motor back with a cheap swap and end up calling us again within months. It’s not worth the downtime in a wheel bearing bay that depends on that lift running every day.
