The instrument panel on your dashboard features multiple gauges and indicators, such as the fuel gauge, speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure gauge, and engine temperature gauge. Most of these are self-explanatory; for instance, the speedometer measures your speed. However, the tachometer, which displays engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM) and often has a red zone that should not be exceeded, might not be as obvious.

In the previous lesson, we examined all the Automotive Lift Repair Orlando vehicle lighting, including dashboard symbols. Now, we’ll discuss the meanings of these symbols. For specific information about the dashboard symbols in a particular vehicle, refer to its owner’s manual, as the symbols can vary by make and model.

Automotive Lift Repair Orlando Dashboard lights come in red, orange, yellow, green, or blue. Generally, red lights indicate more severe issues, and if a red light comes on while driving, you should pull over safely and call for a tow truck. However, there are exceptions—some lights that are typically red can be yellow or orange, and some red lights can be resolved immediately (e.g., the seat belt light can be turned off by fastening your seat belt, or the door ajar light by closing all doors). Orange or yellow lights usually signal a problem with your vehicle, but it is safe to drive to a repair facility or your home to investigate further, with some exceptions. Green and blue lights typically serve as indicators that something is on or a system is functioning (such as blinker lights, high beam lights, or cruise control). Always consult the owner’s manual for your specific vehicle and for illustrations of the dashboard lights.

Here are some common Automotive Lift Repair Orlando dashboard indicator lights:

This light indicates a problem with the airbag system, which could be a safety issue. It doesn’t necessarily mean the airbags won’t work, but it signals that a part of the airbag system may not function properly.

– Anti-Lock Brakes Light: Orange or yellow. This light signals a failure in the anti-lock brake system (ABS), disabling the ABS function. The ABS helps maintain steering control while braking to prevent skidding during a panic stop. If this light is on, conventional brake function will continue, but in a panic stop, the vehicle may skid. Have the vehicle serviced.

– Brake Light: Red. If this light illuminates while driving, pull over safely and have the vehicle towed. If it’s on before driving and shared with the parking brake light, disengage the parking brake. This light indicates an issue with the brakes, such as low brake fluid, a hydraulic brake failure, or an engaged parking brake.

Check Engine Light

A red, orange, or yellow light indicates an issue with the vehicle emissions system, and the vehicle’s computer will have diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) retrievable during inspection. If you notice performance issues, pull over and have the vehicle towed. If the light stays on or flashes during acceleration, pull over safely and have it towed to a shop.

Automotive Lift Repair Orlando Door Ajar Indicator Light

A red light indicates that one of the vehicle doors is open. Close the open door before driving.

High Beam Indicator or Brights

Usually blue, but can be red in older vehicles, this light indicates that your high beams are on.

Low Coolant Level Light

A red, orange, or yellow light indicates that the engine coolant level is low, possibly due to a leak. It is safe to drive as long as the engine temperature light is not on. Some vehicles use a thermometer symbol for this purpose. Always check the coolant level when the engine is cool, as per Lesson 2. Consult the owner’s manual for details.

Low Fuel Light

A yellow or orange light indicates low fuel. It may be a simple round light that illuminates when the fuel gauge nears empty.

Low Oil Level Light

A yellow or orange light indicates that the oil level is low. Refill the oil as soon as possible and have the vehicle inspected to determine the cause.

Low Oil Pressure or Engine Oil Pressure Light

A red light requires immediate action: pull over safely and check the oil level, adding oil if necessary. If the light remains on, have the vehicle towed to avoid catastrophic engine failure, which can be very expensive to repair.

Automotive Lift Repair Orlando Parking Brake Light

A red light indicates that the parking brake is engaged or not fully released.

Service Vehicle Soon Light

A yellow light that may appear with other lights, indicating a problem with systems such as anti-lock brakes (ABS), brake hydraulic system, traction control system (TCS), or electronic suspension system. Do not confuse this with the “Service Engine Soon” light, a type of check engine light.

Temperature Light or Hot Engine Light

A red light that requires you to pull over safely, turn off the engine, and have the vehicle towed. Continuing to drive can cause severe engine failure. Turning the heater to high can help dissipate engine heat temporarily. If the heater does not work, it indicates low coolant levels. The dashboard may also have a temperature gauge with a thermometer symbol.

Throttle Control Warning Light

A yellow or orange light indicating a problem with the vehicle’s electronic throttle control system. In some models, a wrench light may have different meanings, so consult the owner’s manual.

Automotive Lift Repair Orlando Tire Pressure Warning Light

A yellow or orange light indicates that one or more tires have fallen below 25% of the recommended pressure. Check the tires soon.

Turn Signals and Hazard Light Display

Usually green, these lights illuminate when a turn signal (left or right) or hazard lights (both simultaneously) are on. If one stays on instead of blinking or blinks at an unusual rate, there may be a problem with the bulbs or circuit.

Charging System Light or Voltage Light

A red light indicates that voltage is below the minimum Automotive Lift Repair Orlando specification, and the vehicle will stop running once the battery dies. Safely pull over and have the vehicle towed, especially at night when headlights drain the battery faster. If the light is yellow, still treat it as a red light.
