No matter how well your engine performs, the road conditions, or your skill level as an operator, if the vehicle’s engine power isn’t transmitted to the wheels, it might as well be out of commission. The Automotive Lift Repair Tampa Florida transmission’s role is to align the vehicle’s load needs with the engine’s power and speed. Similarly, the transfer case serves this purpose and also facilitates the connection and disconnection of front-wheel drive components. The differential alters the rotational axis of engine torque to the front and rear axles and divides the torque between the driving wheels, allowing them to rotate at different speeds.

This chapter covers standard Automotive Lift Repair Tampa Florida transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials, along with indicators of abnormal operations, enabling you to diagnose issues and recommend corrective measures. For more detailed guidance on the operation and repair of these components, consult the specific manufacturer’s manuals.

 THE STANDARD TRANSMISSION

The operation of standard transmissions in vehicles is detailed in Construction Mechanic 3 and 2, It’s advisable to review chapter 8 of this training course before diving into this section.

Typically, you won’t be directly troubleshooting or repairing these systems, but as a supervisor, it’s crucial to understand the correct procedures for carrying out these tasks and addressing specific maintenance challenges.

While all Automotive Lift Repair Tampa Florida transmissions are designed to fulfill similar functions, they can differ significantly in their construction and application.

As a result, it’s not feasible to cover every make and model you might encounter in the Navy. The information in this section is general; for specific issues and procedures regarding a particular transmission, refer to the manufacturer’s manual.

It’s uncommon for the Automotive Lift Repair Tampa Florida transmission of a vehicle to be produced by the same company that manufactured the vehicle itself. Typically, a manufacturer that specializes in automotive components will create the transmission and sell it to the vehicle manufacturer. You can find the manufacturer’s name and the model number on a nameplate attached to the side of the transmission case. For instance, the Spicer Company uses a four-digit model number where the third digit indicates the number of forward speeds available.

If a transmission lacks a nameplate, consult the vehicle manufacturer’s manual for identification.

 TROUBLESHOOTING TRANSMISSIONS

It is crucial that transmission troubleshooting be conducted by trained and experienced mechanics. Often, an operator may report transmission noise on the Operator’s Trouble Report when the noise might actually be coming from another component of the vehicle’s powertrain.

There are numerous noises that may seem to originate from the transmission but actually come from other sources, such as an unbalanced propeller shaft, faulty wheel bearings, or damaged tires. These sounds do not have distinct characteristics that would reveal their true source, making them challenging to diagnose.

One common cause of noise perceived to be from the Automotive Lift Repair Tampa Florida transmission is torsional vibration, which may stem from the following:

1. Unbalanced propeller shaft (drive shaft)

2. Worn universal joints

3. Loose drive shaft center bearings

4. Worn and pitted teeth on the axle pinion and ring gear

5. Unbalanced wheels

6. Worn spring pivot bearings

7. Loose frame or axle U-bolts

8. Unbalanced engine cooling fan

9. Out-of-balance engine crankshaft, flywheel, and/or clutch plate

10. Wobbly or mismatched tires or wheels

This list, combined with other issues you have encountered in your experience, can serve as a step-by-step guide for troubleshooting transmission noise. Ensure that all external noise sources are ruled out before having your team remove the transmission.

When assessing a vehicle for transmission noise, lift the vehicle so that the driving wheels are off the ground. Start and operate the vehicle across all speed ranges, including coasting with the shift lever in neutral. Listen carefully for noises and try to pinpoint their origin. There are various methods for checking transmission noises, and any approach will depend on the mechanic’s experience and judgment.

If it is determined that the noise is coming from the transmission, it will generally be necessary to remove and disassemble the transmission.

However, it’s important not to stop at merely identifying and fixing the issue; always investigate the root cause. For instance, if you discover broken gear teeth, don’t just replace the transmission—find out what led to the malfunction.

Whenever you encounter components like an Automotive Lift Repair Tampa Florida transmission in unserviceable condition, consult with the driver. They may provide insights into how the failure occurred, offering clues to the underlying cause.

If you can’t identify the cause, you may have to repeat the repair, as the same issue could arise in the replacement transmission.

Let’s examine some reasons why lubricant may leak from various locations.

A transmission, like most gear cases, is prone to leaking if the oil level is excessively high. To thicken the oil used in gear cases, some manufacturers add soap and soda. As the gears operate, the oil splashes throughout the gear case. This splashing, combined with the soap and heat, can cause the oil to foam or become aerated, leading to an increase in volume. Consequently, this creates excessive pressure within the gear case. If the initial oil level is already high, the pressure may exceed the capacity of the seals and gaskets, resulting in leaks at one or multiple locations. It’s essential to check the transmission oil level only after the vehicle has been parked for several hours or overnight, allowing any bubbles or foam to settle as liquid at the bottom of the case.

When the Automotive Lift Repair Tampa Florida transmission is cold, remove the fill plug. The oil level should be at or just below the bottom of the fill plug hole. If the level is too high, allow the excess oil to drain out. Even with a correct oil level, foaming can cause the internal pressure to rise too high. To release excess pressure, a vent valve is used, featuring a seat and a spring-loaded ball, with a dust cap covering the assembly.

To inspect the vent valve, ensure the surrounding area is clean. Try turning the dust cap with your fingers; it should rotate easily in either direction. If it does not, it should be replaced.
