A weekend hobbyist mechanic in West Des Moines emailed us last spring with almost exactly the same question we hear from garage builders across Iowa: he wanted an automotive shop lift that could handle transmission service on a passenger vehicle under 7,000 lbs, store a car on it, and maybe park a second car underneath, all inside a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot sidewalls. That’s a great real-world scenario because it forces the exact decision every buyer eventually faces — overhead configuration or baseplate configuration. We put together this checklist because that decision shapes your ceiling clearance, your install cost, and how much room you actually have left in the shop once the lift is in.

Item One: Measure Your Actual Ceiling Height

Before anything else, get a tape measure on your real ceiling height, not the number from the building plans. Pole buildings settle, insulation gets added, and lighting fixtures eat into clearance you thought you had. A 12-foot sidewall sounds generous, but once you account for the lift’s overhead crossbar height plus the vehicle height on the arms plus a safety margin, an overhead-style automotive shop lift can get tight fast, especially with a taller SUV or truck on the arms.

Baseplate configurations remove the overhead crossbar entirely, running hydraulic and cable connections through the floor-mounted base instead. For a 12-foot sidewall shop doing transmission work on passenger cars, this usually isn’t a hard requirement, but if you ever plan to add a truck or a roof rack vehicle to the mix, baseplate buys you insurance against a clearance problem you can’t fix after the concrete is poured.

Item Two: Confirm Slab Thickness and Rebar for Baseplate Anchoring

Baseplate lifts route their hydraulic lines under a raised steel plate bolted to the slab, and that plate needs a slab thick enough and structurally sound enough to anchor properly. Most pole building shops pour a standard 4-inch slab, which works fine for many baseplate two-post models rated under 10,000 lbs, but it’s worth confirming with your specific model’s spec sheet before you assume it’s fine.

If your slab was poured without the lift location planned in advance, you may find rebar or wire mesh sitting exactly where an anchor needs to go, which means either relocating the lift a few inches or dealing with a harder anchoring job. This is the single most common surprise we run into on new construction projects, and it’s entirely avoidable if you tell your concrete crew where the automotive shop lift is going before they pour.

Item Three: Decide How You’ll Route Hydraulic and Electrical Lines

Overhead configurations keep all the hydraulic and electrical routing above the vehicle, out of the floor entirely, which makes the install faster and avoids any slab cutting or trenching. For a hobbyist doing transmission service in a shop he’s building from scratch, this can shave real time and cost off the install if the ceiling clearance works.

Baseplate setups need lines run either through a shallow trench cut into the slab or through a surface-mounted conduit, and if you’re pouring new concrete, running conduit before the pour is dramatically cheaper than cutting it in afterward. For transmission work specifically, floor routing has one real advantage: nothing hangs overhead that a transmission jack or engine hoist could clip while you’re maneuvering under the vehicle.

Item Four: Plan for a Second Vehicle Underneath

This is where the West Des Moines scenario gets interesting — storing a car up on the automotive shop lift with a second vehicle parked underneath. This works fine with either configuration, but overhead crossbars need enough clearance above the parked vehicle underneath, not just above the vehicle on the arms, and that math can get tight in a 12-foot building faster than people expect.

Baseplate lifts sidestep the overhead clearance question entirely since there’s nothing above either vehicle, which makes them the safer pick specifically for a stacked-storage use case. If storage-while-servicing is a priority use case for your build, weight that heavily in the overhead versus baseplate decision, because it’s not a detail you can retrofit later without redoing the install.

Item Five: Match Capacity to Real Vehicle Weight, Not Just the Car You Own Today

A 7,000 lb capacity automotive shop lift comfortably covers the vast majority of passenger cars, crossovers, and light trucks, and it’s the right call for a hobbyist doing transmission service on family vehicles. But think beyond today’s car. If a future purchase leans toward a heavier truck or an SUV with aftermarket armor and fuel tanks, a 9,000 or 10,000 lb rated model gives headroom without a major cost jump at purchase time.

Transmission work specifically involves supporting significant weight off-center while a transmission jack works underneath, so we always recommend not buying right at the edge of your vehicle’s curb weight. Leave margin, especially for a lift you’re installing once and expecting to use for a decade or more.

Item Six: Check Arm Reach and Swing for Transmission Access

Transmission service means getting a transmission jack positioned squarely underneath the vehicle with full access, so arm swing and reach matter more here than for basic oil-change lifts. Overhead configurations typically offer a fully open, unobstructed floor because everything routes above, which some hobbyist mechanics prefer specifically for transmission and drivetrain jobs where floor space under the vehicle is at a premium.

Baseplate configurations have a low-profile plate running between the columns that a transmission jack needs to clear or roll over, and while this isn’t usually a dealbreaker, it’s worth test-fitting your specific jack against the model’s plate height before you commit. Item Seven: Factor in Install Cost and Timeline for a New Pole Building

Overhead lifts generally install faster and cheaper in new construction because there’s no concrete work involved beyond the anchor bolts themselves. Baseplate lifts cost more up front in labor if you need trenching or careful anchor planning, but that cost is dramatically lower if it’s planned before the slab is poured versus retrofitted after.
