That’s a common combination, and it’s a good example of why buying a storage lift isn’t a single decision, it’s a chain of decisions. Budget, vehicle weight, ceiling height, and electrical service all stack on top of each other, and getting one wrong forces you to redo the others. Step One: What’s the Budget Range

Every automotive storage lift conversation starts with budget, because it filters out configurations before you even get to specs. A basic two-post storage lift for a single passenger vehicle sits at the entry end of the range. Adding capability to park a second vehicle underneath, or stepping up to a four-post platform lift instead of a two-post, moves you up a tier. Adding a rolling jack, a sliding jack tray for brake work, or a higher weight rating moves you up again.

We ask Marion customers to give us a realistic number before we start talking configurations, because there’s no point spec’ing out a four-post storage lift with full underneath clearance if the budget only supports a straightforward two-post unit. Most home-shop and small-fleet buyers land in a middle tier once they add a rolling jack for maintenance work, which is worth budgeting for up front rather than as an afterthought purchase six months later.

Step Two: What Vehicle Weight and How Many Cars

Once budget sets the ceiling, vehicle weight sets the floor. A passenger vehicle under 7,000 lbs covers the overwhelming majority of storage lift requests we get, including the Marion shop that wanted to park one car up top with room for a second vehicle to sit underneath. That two-vehicle setup almost always points toward a four-post platform-style storage lift rather than a two-post, because the platform itself becomes the parking surface and a second car can pull in underneath the ramps without touching the lift’s structure at all.

If daily maintenance is part of the plan — not just parking — that changes the arm and platform choice too. A four-post storage lift with drive-on ramps is excellent for pure storage but can be slower to work under unless it has a sliding center jack. A two-post lift with open arms gives faster underbody access for oil changes, brake work, and general upkeep, but only stores one vehicle per lift and needs floor clearance on both sides. We size every quote around both numbers — the heaviest vehicle expected, and the actual number of vehicles being stored — because guessing on either one means recommending the wrong category of lift entirely.

Step Three: Ceiling Height and Building Layout

A 12-foot sidewall, like the Marion shop’s pole building, is workable but tight for full-height two-vehicle storage setups. We calculate the stacked height of the platform, the vehicle on top, and clearance to the trusses or ductwork before recommending a configuration. Pole buildings often have knee braces or purlins that reduce usable height right where the lift needs to sit, even though the sidewall number sounds generous on paper.

Concrete floor condition matters just as much in this step. A 30×40 shop with a properly poured slab is usually fine for anchor bolts, but slab thickness and age both affect the pull-out rating, especially for four-post storage lift setups carrying two vehicles’ worth of static load for extended periods. We ask for slab age and thickness on every Marion and central Iowa quote, and we’ve walked away from configurations that looked great on paper but would have needed slab reinforcement first. It’s better to know that before the lift ships than after.

Step Four: Electrical Circuit Requirements

This is where a lot of shop owners get surprised. Most home and small-shop automotive storage lift models run on a standard 220-volt single-phase circuit, which is usually already present or easy to add in a pole building shop that also runs a welder or air compressor. Amperage draw varies by lift model and motor size, so we confirm the exact circuit requirement for the specific unit before a customer calls an electrician — there’s real variation between brands and horsepower ratings.

Larger four-post storage lifts, especially ones with higher weight capacity or dual motors, sometimes step up to a requirement that a smaller pole building’s existing panel can’t support without an upgrade. Three-phase power shows up more in bigger commercial installs than in typical home or small-fleet storage setups, but if a shop already has three-phase run for other equipment, some commercial-grade lifts can take advantage of it. We always tell customers to get their electrician’s read on panel capacity before ordering, because rewiring a shop after the lift arrives costs more than confirming it up front.

Step Five: Rolling Jack and Maintenance Add-Ons

Since the Marion shop wanted general daily maintenance capability, not just storage, that pushed the decision toward accessories most pure-storage buyers skip. A rolling jack lets you lift a vehicle’s wheels off the platform for tire work or brake service without needing a separate floor jack setup, and it’s one of the most requested add-ons we sell alongside four-post storage lifts. Without it, you’re stuck sliding a floor jack under a platform-style lift, which works but is slower and less stable.

We also see customers add locking mechanisms and adjustable ramp extensions when the storage lift is going to double as a working maintenance station. It’s cheaper to spec it once, correctly, than to retrofit.

Step Six: Installation and Layout Walkthrough

Two vehicles plus a rolling jack plus walk-around clearance adds up fast in a 30×40 footprint, especially once you account for door swing on the vehicle parked underneath and the ramp angle on the platform above.

Putting the Decision Tree Together
