An automotive storage lift install has more line items than most buyers expect. Equipment, freight, install labor, concrete, anchors, electrical drop, rolling jacks, drip trays, and the six-month follow-up all show up on the total invoice. We ran a full install last spring for a heavy-duty truck shop owner in southeast Iowa who wanted a lift for his personal pickup fleet plus a bay to run alignment work on the class-3 trucks his shop sees. Here is the actual cost structure of that build, broken out honestly, so you can budget without surprises.

The shop and the requirements
The customer runs a class-3 truck repair shop with a personal three-truck pickup fleet parked in a separate outbuilding. The outbuilding was 40 by 60 with 14-foot ceilings and a 5-inch slab poured in 2019 with number-four rebar on 18-inch centers. Ideal shop for lift equipment. His ask was a single automotive storage lift that could park his F-350 dually on top with an F-150 underneath, plus a working bay for alignment on the class-3 trucks his customers bring him. Ceiling height was not a constraint. Floor plan and column placement were the constraints.
Capacity requirement worked out to 12,000 lb minimum for the dually plus service load. Runway length needed to accommodate the F-350 crew cab long bed, which is 21 feet 8 inches bumper to bumper. Standard four-post runways are 200 inches, or 16 feet 8 inches. He needed the extended-length runway upgrade to fit the full truck. That drove several downstream cost decisions on the automotive storage lift build.
Equipment line: the lift itself
The lift specified was a Rotary SPOA12 four-post automotive storage lift, 12,000 lb capacity, extended-length runway variant. That sits in the mid to upper tier for four-post equipment, well above a base-model 9K storage lift and below a full commercial 14K rack. The extended-length option added roughly 15 percent to the base equipment cost. Extended-height was not needed given his 14-foot ceiling. He specified aluminum ramps as a factory option, which run a few hundred dollars over the standard steel ramps and save the technician’s back on the daily drive-on.
Options added at order time included drip trays for both runways, a caster kit for occasional bay repositioning, and a jack platform for one rolling jack. He deferred the second rolling jack to phase two, which we scheduled six months out. Every option added at order time is 15 to 30 percent cheaper than the same option added after the fact, because shipping and install labor batch into the primary delivery.
Freight and delivery
Freight on the automotive storage lift from the manufacturer to our Ames warehouse ran a standard LTL rate for that lane. From Ames to the customer’s shop in southeast Iowa, we deliver on our own truck at no additional charge within a 90-mile radius. His shop was inside that radius, so the delivery line was zero. Customers outside that radius pay a mileage rate that generally runs less than a common-carrier LTL charge.
The lift crates on two pallets: one for columns and cross-beams, one for runways, cables, and power unit. Total shipping weight on a 12K four-post automotive storage lift is about 4,400 pounds. That crosses the threshold where residential freight companies start adding fees, which is one reason we deliver ourselves when we can. On the customer’s end, he needed to have a forklift or a friend with a skid steer available to offload the pallets when we arrived. He had both.
Install labor
Install labor on a standard four-post automotive storage lift runs one day for a two-person crew if the shop is prepped and clear. The southeast Iowa install ran a day and a half because we added the extended-length runway modifications on site and set the caster kit at initial install rather than as a follow-up. Our install labor rate is priced per install, not per hour, so the customer knew the number before we started.
Included in the install line: layout, anchor drilling, anchor set and torque, column stand-up, cross-beam and runway assembly, cable routing, power unit mount, hydraulic line connection, safety lock ladder verification, 15-cycle full-load test with the customer’s own truck, and cleanup. Not included: any concrete work, any electrical work beyond a standard 20-amp receptacle drop, and any bay modifications required to make the lift fit. Those get quoted separately as needed. On this install, none of that was required, so the install line was the standard number.
Concrete, anchors, and slab prep
Slab was already in spec. Five inches of 3,500 PSI concrete with number-four rebar on 18-inch centers is exactly what we would have specified for a 12K storage duty lift. Zero prep work required. Anchors were factory 3/4 inch by 6 inch wedge anchors, eight total, at factory torque of 110 foot-pounds. Total line for anchors and drilling consumables was minor, well under a hundred dollars in materials.
Where slab costs show up is when the customer’s shop has a 3.5 inch pea-gravel slab from a farm building conversion, or a post-tensioned slab that needs scanning, or existing anchor holes from a previous install. On this install, none of that applied. On average across all the automotive storage lift installs we do, about half require some kind of slab remediation that adds two to five hundred dollars to the total. Budget for it if your slab history is unclear.
Options: rolling jacks, drip trays, jack platforms
Rolling jacks are the single biggest optional line item on a four-post automotive storage lift install. A pair of Rotary RJ8000 rolling jacks for a 12K lift runs a solid four-figure add. The southeast Iowa customer took delivery of one jack at initial install, deferred the second to phase two. That got the alignment work started without the full jack investment. Six months in, he ordered the second, and we installed it during a scheduled follow-up. Total jack investment ended up spread over eight months, which helped his cash flow.
Drip trays and jack platform are much smaller line items. Both got added at initial order. Drip trays run a few hundred per lift, jack platform another couple hundred. Small items but worth budgeting for on the first quote. Total options line on his install came in at about 20 percent of the base equipment line, which is on the lower end of what we typically see for a service-configured storage lift.
Total build and phase-two additions
Total for the initial install: the lift, extended-length runway, freight, delivery, install labor, one rolling jack, drip trays, jack platform, and anchors. That total landed in a predictable range for a fully-optioned 12K four-post automotive storage lift install in eastern Iowa. Nothing surprising, nothing hidden, no scope creep on our end.
Phase two six months out added the second rolling jack, a set of overhead task lights we retrofitted to his ceiling truss, and a runway extension we fabricated on site to bring turnplate clearance to alignment-ready dimension. Phase-two total was a fraction of the phase-one total, which is what you would expect when the lift is already installed and only options are being added.
