Start with what storage actually means to you
The word storage covers two very different setups. Some buyers mean park a vehicle up top for six months at a time and never touch it. Others mean move a car up when I am not working on it and down when I am. Those two use cases point to different lifts. Long-term parking on top rewards a wide-runway 4-post with drip trays and a caster kit, you set it and forget it. Frequent up-and-down for weekend service rewards a lift with a quiet, smooth motor, well-lit runways, and easy jack tray access. Before you look at brands, write down how many times a week you will actually cycle the top vehicle. If the answer is fewer than five, buy for storage on a proper automotive storage lift. If it is twenty, buy for service.
Why arm choice is a 2-post question, not an automotive storage lift question
Arms are what you find on a 2-post lift. Two columns, four swing arms, adapters that reach under the vehicle’s frame or pinch-weld pads. On any true automotive storage lift, the four-post design that stores a vehicle by driving it onto runways, there are no arms. The vehicle sits on the runways, weight distributed through its own tires, and the runways carry it up. That means arm geometry, symmetric versus asymmetric, is not a decision you make on a storage-first purchase. If you want to store a vehicle on a 2-post, understand you are asking a service tool to do a parking job it was not designed for. It works, but the tire-off, wheels-hanging position is not how you want to store a car for months.

Some buyers will hear that and still want a 2-post. Fine, here is the arm question straight. Symmetric arms are equal length front and rear; the vehicle sits centered between the columns, and you get equal room in front of and behind the doors. Asymmetric arms have shorter rear arms and rotated columns; the vehicle sits slightly rearward, giving you door clearance to open without hitting the column. Weight rating for a family with two daily drivers
Most modern crossovers and sedans hit 4,000 to 4,800 lb. A midsize SUV can push 5,200. A three-quarter-ton pickup will land near 7,000 dry. For a family with two daily drivers, a 9,000 lb automotive storage lift covers everything you will realistically own, including a future truck, with headroom to spare. Do not chase the smaller 7,000 lb rating to save a few hundred dollars; the day you buy a truck or a hybrid SUV with a heavy battery pack you will wish you had the capacity. On the service side, brake work is a light-load operation, you are lifting an unloaded vehicle. The capacity question is really about your future garage, not your current job.

Brake service reality on a storage lift
Doing brakes on a 4-post automotive storage lift means using a bridge jack, a rolling jack that sits across the runways and lifts the vehicle off the runways by the frame or axles, freeing the wheels to spin. Without a bridge jack, the tires are planted on the runways and you cannot rotate the rotor or pull the wheel. Factor a bridge jack into your budget from day one; a decent one runs a few hundred dollars and is the single accessory that turns a storage lift into a brake-service lift. If you skip it, you will do wheels-on inspections and never get past pad slaps.
Seven questions to answer before you order an automotive storage lift
Copy these down. One: how many times per week will the top vehicle actually move? Two: what is the heaviest vehicle you could realistically own in the next ten years? Three: what is the finished-floor to lowest-obstruction ceiling height in your bay? Four: is your slab 4 inches or thicker and at least 3000 PSI? Five: is your electrical panel within a reasonable run of the lift location? Six: do you have room to walk around all four columns without side-swiping stored items? Seven: what accessories, meaning bridge jack, drip trays, caster kit, jack tray, do you need on day one versus year two? Answer those honestly and you will not buy the wrong lift.
