Every automotive storage lift we sell to a rural farm shop starts with the same conversation. The buyer knows he wants a four-post and has not yet run through the ten checks that make or break the install. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, and last month we took a call from a farm shop owner outside Waterloo who was planning to transmission-swap his daughter’s Silverado in the machine shed. Great use case, but the shed slab was 3 inches thick and the ceiling was 10 feet. Here is the pre-purchase checklist we walk every farm buyer through before quoting.

Check one: the model number on the door tag

Before any capacity discussion, we ask the buyer to walk out to the heaviest vehicle he will ever lift and read the model tag inside the driver’s door jamb. GVWR is the number that matters, not what he thinks the truck weighs. A half-ton Silverado 1500 with a service body and welder in the bed can push 7,500 lbs curb, and its GVWR runs 7,000 to 7,600. A three-quarter-ton hits 10,000, a one-ton hits 11,500 to 14,000. Farm shops usually underestimate because it is just a pickup. Get the GVWR of every vehicle you plan to put on the automotive storage lift, add the loaded weight of anything in the bed, and pick a lift rated for the biggest one plus 20 percent headroom. This one check has saved more farm buyers from buying-too-small than any other item on the list. It also settles the argument between the buyer and his brother-in-law who insists the F-250 only weighs six thousand pounds.

Check two: spec the runway length against your longest vehicle

Runway length varies by model. Standard runways on most automotive storage lift models run 156 to 173 inches. That covers a short-bed half-ton fine. A long-bed three-quarter-ton crew cab runs 250 inches bumper to bumper, which is fine on-lift as long as your runways are at least 173 inches. The tires are what have to sit on the runway, and wheelbase is usually 145 to 170. Extended-length runways in the 180-to-200 inch range exist and cost more. If you are servicing a dually or a fifth-wheel-towing truck, spec extended. For a farm shop with mixed cars and pickups, standard usually works. Measure the wheelbase of your longest vehicle, add 10 inches for placement forgiveness, and compare to the model spec sheet. If you have an old flatbed dually you use for hauling gates, that is the vehicle you spec around, not the daily-driver sedan.

Check three: slab thickness, mix rating, and cracks

The slab is where farm shops get in trouble. Machine shed slabs poured for grain-cart storage or general equipment often run 3 inches thick, which is under the 4-inch minimum every automotive storage lift manufacturer requires. Some sheds have 3,000 psi mix, some have 2,500, and some the owner has no idea. Rebar or wire mesh helps but is not strictly required as long as the mix and thickness check out. Cracks running under the column footprint are a hard no. We will not install on a cracked footprint because the column can shift under load and the safety-lock geometry fails. Options if your slab fails the check: cut and re-pour the four column pads, pour a full new bay, or find a different bay in the shop. Check four: ceiling clearance top of lift, plus car on top

Ceiling has to clear the top of the columns fully raised, plus any overhead lock hardware, plus the highest point of the vehicle you are stacking on top. For a standard-column automotive storage lift, minimum ceiling is around 11 feet if you are stacking cars. For tall-column models designed for double-stacking pickups you are looking at 12 to 13 feet or more. The Waterloo farm shop had a 10-foot ceiling in the machine shed, which meant a standard automotive storage lift would not fit with a vehicle on top. He could use it as a service lift only, not for storage. We ended up quoting him a lower-column variant meant for service-only use. Always measure ceiling from finished floor to the lowest point (bottom chord of trusses, HVAC ducts, lighting), not to peak. Pole-barn peaks look tall but the trusses come down closer than most owners realize.

Check five: 220-volt power, breaker size, and outlet location

Farm shops usually have 220V available from the welder circuit, and every automotive storage lift power unit runs on 220V single-phase with a 20-amp breaker. The gotcha is outlet placement. The power unit sits at one corner of the lift, and the factory cord is usually 10 to 15 feet. If the nearest 220 outlet is on the far wall, you are running an extension cord (not recommended long-term) or having an electrician install a new outlet. Farm buyers with a Blue Bird tractor plug or twist-lock welder outlet can usually pigtail-adapter their way through the first year, but for a permanent install we recommend a dedicated 20-amp 220V outlet within 8 feet of the lift power unit location. Electrician labor for that runs low-to-mid three figures depending on how far the run has to go from the panel.

Check six: transmission service jack clearance and workflow

The farm buyer core use case was pulling a transmission out of his Silverado. On a four-post automotive storage lift, transmission removal works like this. Drive the truck onto the runways, raise to full height, position a transmission jack on the shop floor between the runways, and drop the trans onto the jack. Two things have to line up. First, the runway spread has to be wide enough for the transmission jack. Most trans jacks are 30 to 36 inches wide and fit between 40-inch spread runways just fine. Second, the truck has to be positioned so the transmission crossmember lines up between the runways, not over them. That is a placement issue you solve when you drive on. Bridge jacks help with tire and half-shaft work but are not required for the trans drop itself. Farm shops that already own a floor-mount trans jack are 90 percent of the way there before the lift shows up.

Checks seven through ten: freight, install, warranty, and parts pipeline

Check seven: freight. Farm shops usually do not have a dock or forklift, so lift-gate service is required and adds cost. Some shops have a tractor with a bucket that can offload if the driver is patient. Call ahead. Check eight: install. DIY is doable if you are mechanically inclined and comfortable with anchor bolts and hydraulic bleed procedures. Pro install is safer but adds a line item. Check nine: warranty. Atlas typically runs 1-year full, 5-year structural. BendPak runs 5-year full structural. Read the fine print on hydraulics and cables. Check ten: parts pipeline.
