When a mobile mechanic in Iowa City called us last spring, he was tired of chasing suspension jobs on his back in gravel driveways. He wanted a real shop, and automotive two post lifts were the first thing on his list. This is the story of that install: the ceiling he almost could not work with, the door swing that dictated the entire layout, and the strut jobs he now knocks out in an hour instead of a whole afternoon. Why a mobile mechanic upgraded to automotive two post lifts

For nine years he ran a tools-in-the-truck operation. Oil, brakes, batteries, anything he could do curbside, he did. Suspension was always the problem. Struts, control arms, coil springs and shock replacements require the wheels to hang, and you cannot do that safely on jack stands in a driveway that pitches half an inch toward the curb. He had been turning that work away, or referring it out and losing the customer. When he leased a two-bay building on the north side of Iowa City, he called us before the paint was dry. The plan was straightforward: one general-purpose bay for tires, oil, and brakes; one dedicated strut-and-shock bay built around a serious clear-floor lift. Automotive two post lifts are the right tool for suspension work because the wheels hang free, both arms swing out of the way, and there is no cross-tube in the middle to catch a control arm. The rest of this article is what we did next and what we would tell any other mobile-mechanic-turned-shop-owner in central Iowa considering the same jump.

The ceiling height question that nearly killed the project

His building was a converted 1970s tire store with a 10-foot 4-inch clear height under the drop ceiling. Not the trusses, the ceiling grid. He had not measured to the actual trusses when he signed the lease. A standard overhead two-post lift needs roughly 12 feet minimum, sometimes 12 feet 2 for taller-column versions. Baseplate models, where the hydraulic hose crosses the floor at the front of the columns rather than through an overhead beam, usually run 8 foot 10 to 9 foot 6. He pulled a tile, verified 11 foot 2 to actual truss, then framed a hard structural cut-out above the lift envelope so we could spec a shorter-column overhead. This is the kind of measurement we ask about on every call. If we had assumed a full-height column, we would have wasted a day on install and a lot of his money. Door swing and the working envelope you actually need

The other trap was the overhead door. He has one 12-foot roll-up on the east side and a 3070 walk-in on the north. Automotive two post lifts need enough drive-in space that the vehicle sits centered between the columns with roughly two feet of walkaround on either side. He wanted the lift close to the roll-up for winter, because you want cold vehicles to enter and get to work fast, but he also wanted to open the roll-up while a car was up. That meant the front columns had to be far enough back that the door track had clear travel. We laid the footprint out with tape on the concrete before we drilled. Front columns landed 13 feet 6 from the roll-up header, back of arms 8 feet farther in. Total bay depth needed: 24 feet. He had 26. That two-foot cushion is worth every square foot. Do not squeeze a lift into a space with no room behind the arms. You will regret it the first time you back a truck in with a trailer hitch installed.

Choosing arms for suspension and shock work

Suspension geometry is unforgiving. The arm pads have to hit the manufacturer’s designated pinch-weld or subframe lift points every time, and the wheels have to swing completely free with no arm in the way. For his work, struts on unibody cars and light trucks, we specified a triple-telescoping asymmetric arm with a stackable adapter kit. The triple-telescoping section matters because subcompacts want the pad tucked close to the column and full-size pickups want it eight or nine feet out. A dual-stage arm can leave you short on one end or the other. Asymmetric column rotation opens the door swing forward, which is huge when the driver’s door is between the front and rear pads. He can now walk around the car with the doors wide open, which he could not do on the buddy shop’s symmetric lift he had been borrowing on Saturdays. We also included frame-cradle pads for pinch-weld cars. Automotive two post lifts live and die by the arm setup. We spend more time talking about arms and adapters than about the lift itself on most installs.

Baseplate versus overhead when clearance is tight

We considered both. Baseplate lifts route the hydraulic line and safety cables through a low channel at the floor between the columns, which lets the top of the columns be open. That buys you 24 to 36 inches of vertical clearance depending on the model. The downside is a bump strip on the floor, a bar you can trip over if you are not paying attention, and something a floor jack has to roll over. For a two-tech shop with a lot of foot traffic, overhead usually wins. For a solo mobile mechanic who owns his shop and knows every square inch of his floor, baseplate is fine and often preferable. We ended up going overhead in his case because his framed-out ceiling cut-out gave him the vertical clearance he needed. But we quoted both. If his truss height had come in an inch shorter, baseplate would have been the answer. The choice between them is dimensional, not preferential. Whichever fits your building fits, and you should not let a preference push you into a lift that does not fit your space.

What install day in Iowa City actually looked like

We rolled in at 7:15 AM with a two-tech crew. Anchor layout, hammer-drill 3/4-inch anchors, torque, verify plumb, stand columns, run overhead cross-tube, plumb the hydraulic circuit, bleed the lines, connect power, cycle the lift 15 times empty, then cycle it three times under a test vehicle. Four hours start to finish. He was doing his first paying strut job on it by 4 PM. Iowa City permits were pulled ahead of the install because commercial mechanical work above a certain kW draw needs an electrical permit, which is on the building owner or the tenant depending on the lease. But we coordinate on the load calc. A single-phase 220V lift runs on a 30-amp circuit; three-phase 208V pulls less current but needs the disconnect and the correct starter. He had single-phase, so we specified accordingly. Every one of our commercial installs in Iowa gets the same attention to power spec, anchor pattern, and post-install cycling. We do not leave until we have run a load up and down at least three times and the customer has cycled it themselves.

The math never works. A lift that costs 40 percent less but goes down for a week costs you far more than the savings once the phone starts ringing with vehicles you cannot get to.
