A mobile mechanic working the Des Moines metro called us about automotive two post lifts after eight years of doing oil changes and fluid service on customer driveways with a floor jack and a creeper. He’d finally leased a two-bay unit off a light-industrial strip in the northern suburbs and wanted to bring the fluid work indoors — oil and filter, transmission service, coolant flush, brake fluid — while keeping the van running for roadside jobs. His first question wasn’t about price. It was about ALI Gold: he’d seen the label on a competitor’s equipment and wanted to know whether it was real certification or a sticker somebody bought. Fair question, and one we get more often than you’d think. Here’s what we told him, and how the install actually went.

What ALI Gold Actually Certifies

The Automotive Lift Institute runs the third-party certification program that the industry treats as the standard, and the gold label is the part people recognize. Here’s the plain version: a manufacturer submits a specific lift model to an independent lab, the lab tests it against ANSI/ALI ALCTV, and if it passes, that model gets a gold certification label with a serial-traceable number. The testing covers structural load capacity with a safety factor, load holding with the hydraulics intentionally bled, arm restraint function, lowering speed, and the completeness of the installation and operation manuals.

The important nuance is that certification applies to a model, not a brand. A manufacturer can have three certified models and two that aren’t, and the uncertified ones can sit on the same website with the same logo. That’s where buyers get burned. When we quote automotive two post lifts, we tell customers to look up the specific model number in ALI’s online directory rather than trusting a webpage. It takes ninety seconds and it’s the single best consumer protection in this industry. We also point out that the gold label has to be physically on the lift with a legible number — if a used unit’s label is gone or painted over, you have no way to verify what you bought. That mattered later in this story, because our Des Moines customer was actively shopping used units when he called.

Why Certification Mattered for a One-Man Shop

You might assume ALI certification only matters to dealership groups and fleet accounts with compliance departments. It doesn’t. For a solo mechanic, three practical things hang on it. First, the lease. Plenty of commercial landlords in the metro now write equipment clauses that require certified lifting equipment, and the property manager on this building asked for documentation before install. Second, insurance. General liability carriers ask what’s in the shop, and an uncertified lift with no data plate is a conversation you don’t want to have after an incident.

Third, and honestly the one that matters most: he works under it alone. A mobile mechanic doesn’t have a second tech twenty feet away. If a load-holding device fails at 60 inches with nobody else in the building, the certification testing is the only thing between him and a very bad afternoon. We don’t sell fear — a good uncertified lift can be perfectly safe — but we do sell verifiable engineering, and when a customer is the only person in the building we push hard toward certified models. That’s part of why we only carry Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side of automotive two post lifts. We know the models are in the directory, we know the parts exist, and we know we can service them ten years out.

The Used Lift He Almost Bought

Before he called us he’d found a two-post on a marketplace listing about ninety minutes from Des Moines, priced at roughly a third of a new mid-tier unit. Ten thousand pound capacity, seller said it worked fine, pull it out of a closed shop yourself. He sent photos. We looked at them and told him not to.

Here’s what the photos showed: no visible ALI label, a data plate rusted illegible, equalization cables with visible surface corrosion and no way to know their age, one arm restraint gear with teeth worn round, and anchor bolts that had clearly been in and out of the slab more than once. Could that lift be rebuilt? Sure. New cables, new restraint gears, a cylinder reseal, fresh anchors, and a full inspection — call it a solid chunk of the price gap right there, plus rigging and freight, plus the risk that the columns themselves have hidden issues. We’ve rebuilt plenty of older units and we’re happy to do it when the bones are good and documented. This one wasn’t. The honest math is that a lot of used automotive two post lifts are only cheap until you add up the parts you have to replace to make them safe. He ended up in a new certified unit at an entry-commercial price and, per his own words, sleeps better under it. Speccing the Bay: 9,000 or 10,000 lb?

His work is passenger cars, crossovers, and half-ton pickups — nothing over about 7,000 lb curb weight, and most of it far under. On paper a 9,000 lb asymmetric two-post is more than enough. We still spec’d a 10,000 lb unit, and the reason has nothing to do with weight.

It’s the arms. The 10,000 lb models in both the Rotary and Challenger lines come with longer three-stage front arms and better swing geometry, which means fewer trucks where you’re stretching to reach a factory lift point. A mobile guy building a shop clientele doesn’t get to pick what shows up. Somebody’s F-150 with a long wheelbase, a Sienna with sliders, a lowered Civic — the arm range covers all of it without adapter juggling. The capacity headroom is a bonus, not the point. We also went asymmetric rather than symmetric because door opening matters when you’re doing quick oil service and getting in and out of the cab repeatedly. Symmetric puts the car centered between the columns and you’re squeezing past the post every time. Asymmetric rotates the vehicle back so the doors clear. Slab, Ceiling, and Power in a Leased Metro Building

Leased buildings add a wrinkle: you don’t get to change much, and you have to ask permission for what you do change. We measured the slab first. This building had a nominal six-inch pour, which we verified with a test hole rather than trusting the landlord’s word, and it came back solid 3,000 PSI concrete well past the 28-day cure. Good news — standard anchors, no cutout, no repour.

Ceiling was 11 feet 4 inches to the bottom of the joists, which is workable for a clearfloor overhead model but tight enough that we walked the whole bay looking for lower obstructions. Found two: a sprinkler head and an old air line. The sprinkler stayed and we shifted the lift centerline eighteen inches to clear it, which cost nothing. Power was 208-230V single-phase available on the wall, so no new service — just a dedicated circuit and a disconnect, which the landlord approved in writing. That’s the sequence we run on every job: slab, ceiling with lowest obstruction, power drop location, then drive-through width and floor space for the workflow. Skipping any one of them is how people end up with a lift they can’t legally or physically use. We’d rather spend an hour measuring than a day arguing about who pays for the repour.

Install Day and the First-Year Service Plan

Install ran a single day. Two of our guys set the columns, plumbed and wired the power unit, anchored and torqued to spec, bled the cylinders, ran the equalization cables, cycled the lift a dozen times empty, then loaded it with a vehicle and ran the load-holding and arm restraint checks. Before we left, we walked him through the daily visual — cable tension, hose condition, safety lock engagement audible on the way up, arm restraints latching — and left the manual and the ALI label documentation with him.

Then we set the service expectation, which is the part people skip. New automotive two post lifts need an equalization cable check inside the first ninety days because cables seat and stretch during break-in. After that, an annual inspection is the standard, and if he ever wants to chase fleet or municipal work in the metro, a documented annual by a qualified inspector will be required anyway. We stock cables, arm restraint kits, cylinders, and power units for both brands here in Iowa, so when something eventually wears out he isn’t waiting six weeks on an overseas container. He’s a year in now, doing five to eight fluid services a day indoors plus roadside calls, and the only parts he’s bought from us are a spare set of rubber pads.

What We’d Tell the Next Mobile Mechanic Going Brick-and-Mortar

If you’re moving from a van to a bay, the lift is the single purchase that changes your daily throughput most, and it’s the one you should overbuy slightly rather than underbuy. Go certified. Look the model number up in the ALI directory yourself. Verify your slab with a test hole instead of taking anyone’s word. Measure your ceiling at the lowest obstruction, not the peak, and take a photo of the wall where your power lands so your installer can plan the power unit side.

And build the service cost into the plan from day one. A lift is not a one-time purchase, it’s a ten-to-twenty-year asset with consumable parts, and the shops that treat it that way don’t have surprise downtime.
