The lift itself is a smaller decision than where the lift goes. Measure the bay first, spec the lift second

The single most common mistake we see rural farm shop owners make when buying automotive two post lifts is spec’ing the lift before measuring the bay. They call us with a specific model in mind, usually because they saw a good price online, and ask us to install it, and only during the site visit do we discover that the bay will not accommodate it. Sometimes that means the ceiling is 3 inches short of what the overhead configuration needs. Sometimes it means the columns will not fit in the available floor width because of a workbench along one wall. Sometimes the electrical supply is 110V single-phase and the lift wants 220V.

All of these are solvable, but they are much easier to solve if the sequence goes the other way: measure the bay, then spec the lift to fit. A proper pre-purchase measurement takes about 20 minutes and includes bay length (minimum 18 feet for a 10K lift with adequate clearance), bay width (minimum 12 feet ideal, 11 feet workable), ceiling height at the lowest overhead obstruction, floor slab thickness and rebar pattern, and available electrical service. Get all five numbers before you shop. Column-to-column spread and drive-in clearance

Column-to-column spread on automotive two post lifts is a spec that determines how the bay actually functions. Modern 10K and 12K lifts have column spreads ranging from about 108 inches to 138 inches, and the number matters for two reasons. First: drive-in clearance. You need enough spread that a standard pickup truck at 79 to 82 inches wide can drive in cleanly without the driver having to inch forward, watching mirrors. A 108-inch spread gives 13 inches of clearance on each side, tight but workable. A 118-inch spread gives 18 inches per side, which is comfortable. A 138-inch spread on a heavy-duty CL15 gives 28 inches per side, which is luxurious but eats floor space.

Second: door swing. Once the truck is on the pads, the driver door has to open enough for the driver to exit. On a 108-inch spread with a Ford F-250 crew cab, the door will open partway before hitting the column. On a 118-inch spread, the door usually opens most of the way. Ceiling height and the overhead-vs-baseplate decision

Pole barn construction typically gives 12 to 14 feet of clear height, which comfortably accommodates any overhead configuration. Older gambrel-roof barns or retrofit metal buildings sometimes only give 10 to 11 feet, which forces the baseplate configuration. A 10K overhead lift needs 12 feet of clearance minimum for the crossbar and cable run. A 12K overhead lift usually needs 12 feet 4 inches.

If your ceiling is below those numbers, the baseplate configuration keeps the horizontal cables and hydraulic lines at floor level between the columns, freeing up unlimited overhead space. The trade-off is that you drive across a 4-inch-tall floorplate every time you enter or exit the bay. For most rural farm shops in the Waukee area, that trade-off is fine, the truck front bumper is higher than 4 inches, tools roll over the plate on carts, and the plate is out of the way otherwise. If your bay has a ceiling under 12 feet, do not fight the baseplate configuration. If your bay has 12 to 14 feet of clearance, the overhead configuration gives cleaner drive-through. Measure the lowest obstruction, trusses, HVAC, garage-door tracks, not just the peak height.

Anchor zone and slab: what to verify

The anchor zone for automotive two post lifts is a 24-by-24-inch square of floor at the base of each column, and what is underneath that square determines whether the install will hold up long-term. Verify three things in the anchor zone. First: slab thickness. Drill a 3/8-inch pilot hole in the corner of the bay to depth and measure. Anything under 4 inches means you are pouring a new pad or picking a lower-capacity lift.

Second: slab reinforcement. Use a rebar scanner or a metal detector to check for rebar or wire mesh under the anchor zone. Rebar is not strictly required by ALI for a 4-inch slab under a 10K lift, but its presence dramatically improves overload behavior, the lift will hold up better under the occasional misload. Third: slab condition. Look for cracks, spalling, oil staining, or evidence of previous heavy equipment. Old shop floors that have hosted heavy hoists in the past sometimes have hairline stress cracks in the anchor zone that a scanner will not see. Chip a small area clean and inspect visually. Adjacent workflow: parts, tools, and the second bay

A rural farm shop doing transmission work needs specific things nearby: a transmission jack (either owned or borrowed from us on rental), a parts bench for laying out gears and clutches, adequate light on both sides of the lifted vehicle, and ideally a compressed-air line reachable from either side.

Plan the bay with a 3-foot-minimum clear walkway on each side of the lift, a 6-foot clear zone at the front for the parts bench, and a 4-foot clear zone at the back for tool carts. If you have a second bay, orient it so the two lifts share a common center aisle rather than facing opposite walls; the shared aisle is where the transmission jack, engine hoist, and heavy tool carts live, and both bays can access it simultaneously. Electrical and pneumatic supply

Modern hydraulic power units on 10K and 12K lifts run on 220V single-phase, 20A service. If your shop has 110V-only outlets or a lower-amp 220V circuit, you will need an electrical upgrade before install. An electrician can typically add a dedicated 220V/20A circuit for $250 to $600 depending on distance from the panel. Verify this before you order the lift.

Some rural farm shops in the Waukee area have three-phase service from the farm main power feed, and the good news is that three-phase power units are available for both Rotary and Challenger; they are slightly more expensive but they run cooler under heavy duty cycles. For most single-tech farm shops, single-phase is fine. Pneumatic supply matters if you are spec’ing air-line release for the safety cams, a common option on modern lifts. Air-line release needs a 90 to 120 psi shop compressor with a dedicated tap near the lift.
