Automotive two post lifts fail more site surveys on ceiling height than on any other single factor, and a small-fleet operator in Waukee reminded us of that last month when he called about upgrading two of his four service bays. His building has a 10-foot 4-inch clear ceiling under the joists, a common measurement in older metal buildings across the Des Moines suburbs, and it sits right on the edge of what a standard overhead lift can accommodate. Instead of walking him toward one answer, we ran a side-by-side comparison of a baseplate 10,000-pound lift and a low-ceiling overhead. Here is exactly how that comparison played out.

Measuring the Building Before Anything Else
The first thing we ask a fleet owner is not what lift he wants. It is the clear height from the finished slab to the lowest permanent obstruction: joists, girts, overhead doors in the open position, HVAC ductwork, sprinkler mains. The lowest of those numbers is the number the lift has to live under, and it usually surprises the customer. In Waukee, the joists were the winner at 10 feet 4 inches. The overhead door in open position sat higher, at 10 feet 6.
A standard overhead automotive two post lifts model wants 12 feet 2 inches of ceiling. A low-ceiling overhead variant needs 11 feet 6. A baseplate model needs only whatever height you want the lift to rise to. The Waukee shop was flatly out of overhead territory. That narrows the field fast.
Option A: A Baseplate 10,000-Pound Lift
Baseplate lifts run the equalizer crossmember across the floor between the two columns. That means no overhead bar, no vertical ceiling constraint, and full drive-through width at the top of the columns. For a fleet shop that spots F-150s, half-ton vans, and Transit chassis, that is a workable configuration.
The trade is that low crossmember. A tech has to step over it every time he walks between the columns while a vehicle is in the air. On concrete that is not a big deal. In a fleet shop where the techs are moving fast and pushing tool carts, the crossmember becomes a trip hazard and a tool-cart snag point. It also fills with debris and needs cleaning. We install a lot of baseplate lifts and none of the owners love them, but they work.
Option B: A Low-Ceiling Overhead
The second option we quoted was a Rotary SPO10 in the low-ceiling overhead configuration, which drops the shutoff bar and shortens the columns enough to fit under 11 feet 6 inches of ceiling. That would have required a small ceiling modification in the Waukee building because two of the joists dropped below the 11-foot 6 threshold. We were looking at either notching a joist (structural, needed an engineer) or resetting one HVAC duct that was running below the joist line.
The HVAC duct move was two hours of work for a heating contractor and cost less than $500. That was the number that tipped the decision. Overhead automotive two post lifts are cleaner to work under, faster for the techs, and safer in a bay where multiple people are moving around.
Door Swing and Bay Layout
The Waukee shop had a shared overhead door between two bays. That mattered because a pickup pulling in through the shared door and then angling into a bay needed room to swing without hitting a column. Baseplate columns are usually the same footprint as overhead columns, so this problem does not go away by switching styles.
What we did instead was rotate the lift 90 degrees relative to the door and put the columns on the long axis of the bay. That gave the fleet trucks a straight-shot approach with no side-swing needed. It also gave the tech a full six feet of walk-around on both sides of the truck once it was in the air. Bay layout is at least as important as lift selection when you are working in an older Waukee building.
Suspension and Shock Work on Fleet Trucks
The core work in this fleet is suspension and shock replacement. Fleet trucks eat leaf packs and gas shocks on Iowa road salt, and the Waukee shop rebuilds a front end on average twice a week. That kind of work rewards the automotive two post lifts choice over a scissor or four-post because you need the wheels hanging free.
What we spec-ed for suspension work: 10,000-pound rated arms with pad extenders that reach the frame rails cleanly on both a full-size half-ton and a body-on-frame cargo van; a lift high enough to swing an 18-inch spring compressor under the truck without the tool hitting the floor; and arm restraints that reset cleanly after every lower so a tech does not have to reach up under the truck to unlatch them.
What the Numbers Looked Like Side by Side
The baseplate lift was about 8% cheaper. Installation was slightly faster because we did not have to route the overhead bar. Total ceiling clearance was unlimited, which sounded great on paper.
The low-ceiling overhead was slightly more expensive up front, added the small HVAC duct move, and required us to schedule the heating contractor around our install day. Once installed it gave the shop 96 inches of pad-to-column clearance and a clean drive-through with no floor obstruction. The fleet owner picked the overhead, and six months in he told us he would make the same call again. Automotive two post lifts in an overhead configuration are, in almost every real-world shop we visit, worth the small premium.
What This Means for Your Own Building
