ALI Gold Myths: What EV Shops Get Wrong About Two-Post Lifts

An EV specialty shop owner in Cedar Rapids called us convinced he needed the most heavily certified two-post on the market because he was regularly working on 5,800-pound electric SUVs and doing differential fluid service on dual-motor units. He’d been reading forums and had picked up a handful of confident misconceptions about ALI Gold certification, capacity ratings, and what makes automotive two post lifts safe for battery-heavy vehicles. Auto Lift Services is based in Ames, Iowa, and we install and service lifts for a growing number of EV-focused shops, so we sat down with him and worked through the myths one by one before he spent a dollar.

Myth 1: ALI Gold is a separate, higher tier

The single most common thing we hear from shops new to the certification landscape: “I want the ALI Gold model, not the regular ALI one.” That’s not how the program works. The Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) runs a single third-party certification against ANSI/ALI ALCTV. A lift either carries the ALI gold label — meaning it passed the certification — or it doesn’t. There isn’t an ALI Silver or ALI Platinum. The gold sticker is the sticker.

What creates confusion is that not every model in a brand’s catalog is certified. A manufacturer may certify their 10,000 lb and 12,000 lb automotive two post lifts but skip certification on a specialty 15,000 lb model, or an imported budget line. When shoppers see “ALI Gold” on one model and no label on another from the same brand, they invent a tier system. There isn’t one. Verify the specific model number on the current ALI directory before you buy anything you plan to represent as certified — that’s the only proof that matters.

Myth 2: certification tests the whole install

The Cedar Rapids shop owner assumed ALI certification meant the lift had been tested with his slab, his anchors, and his voltage. It doesn’t. Third-party certification validates the lift design at the factory against a standard test load and cycle count. Once it leaves the warehouse, everything about the install — concrete PSI, slab depth, anchor spec, torque, plumb tolerance — is on the installer and the owner.

That matters especially for automotive two post lifts because their entire safety margin depends on the anchors staying in the floor. A 5,000 PSI slab at 4.25 inches with correctly torqued wedge anchors carries the load the certification anticipates. Cracked slab, thin slab, or under-torqued anchors and none of that certification matters. We tell EV shops this bluntly: buy the certified lift, then treat the concrete inspection and the anchor torque as non-negotiable. Our installers pull anchor torque records and slab measurements on every job, and we hand a copy to the shop for their records.

Myth 3: EVs need a specialty EV lift

There’s a marketing narrative that electric vehicles require some special EV-rated lift, and that regular automotive two post lifts aren’t safe under a battery pack. Reality is more boring: EVs need capacity, pad geometry, and lift-point knowledge, not a categorically different machine. The main difference between EVs and combustion vehicles from a lifting standpoint is that EVs are heavier, weight distribution is different because the battery is centered low, and manufacturers publish specific lift-point diagrams that must be followed exactly.

What that means practically: spec a 12,000 lb symmetric or asymmetric unit rather than a 9,000 lb unit, spring for a good pad and adapter kit, and either laminate or bind the OEM lift-point diagrams for every EV the shop touches. Any ALI-listed lift at the right capacity is fine. The Cedar Rapids owner was ready to pay a premium for an “EV lift” that didn’t exist as a real category. He ended up on a standard 12,000 lb asymmetric unit with a specialty adapter kit and has run it for over a year with no drama.

Myth 4: differential fluid service isn’t a lift concern

Diff fluid service on an EV — especially a dual-motor SUV with front and rear reduction gearsets — requires the vehicle to be perfectly level while you’re pulling and refilling fluid. Owners think that’s a fluid-service concern, not a lift concern. It absolutely is a lift concern. If the two columns of automotive two post lifts aren’t set plumb and level within the manufacturer’s tolerance, one arm sits higher than the other and the vehicle tilts. That skews your fluid fill level and your drainage.

The Cedar Rapids install went in on a slab that turned out to have a slight slope toward a floor drain. We shimmed the base plates to bring the columns into plumb and the arms to level within spec. Owners doing fluid work on EVs should verify with a machinist’s level across the pads before every diff service. It’s a two-minute check and it prevents underfilled diffs, which is a bigger deal on reduction gearsets than on traditional axles because there’s less fluid volume to buffer error.

Myth 5: three-phase is required for commercial use

Nearly every small EV specialty shop we’ve talked to walks in convinced they need three-phase power for their lift. Almost none of them do. The overwhelming majority of automotive two post lifts up to 12,000 lbs are single-phase 208/230V units, and even mid-range 15,000 and 18,000 lb models are available in single-phase configurations from most brands. Three-phase is required only for heavy-duty commercial lifts and for very fast cycle-time production shops.

A one-bay EV specialty shop cycling three vehicles a day doesn’t need three-phase. It also doesn’t need the panel upgrade that comes with it. The Cedar Rapids shop was staring down a $4,000 electrical bill they’d been quoted by a contractor before they called us. We got them on a single-phase 230V unit off their existing panel with a properly sized breaker and a dedicated circuit. Total electrical spend: under $400. That’s a common mistake we can save shops a lot of money on if they call before they commit.

Myth 6: certified lifts don’t fail

Every ALI-listed lift on the market can be operated unsafely. Certification tests the design, not the operator. The most common failure modes on automotive two post lifts in the field are: arms not fully engaged in their locks before the tech goes underneath, pads placed on the wrong lift points, and vehicles that shift because the parking brake wasn’t set or the transmission wasn’t in gear. None of those show up in a factory test.

What we teach every shop, EV or not: always verify arm-lock engagement before you go under. Always cross-check pad placement against the OEM diagram, especially on unibody EVs with pinch-weld cutouts. Always chock a wheel or set the parking brake before you raise. Certification gets you a lift that will hold what it says it will hold. Discipline gets you a lift that will hold what it’s supposed to hold on the day you’re standing under it. Myth 7: certification lasts forever

Last one, and the one that surprises the most owners. ALI certification is a rolling program. A lift model can be certified today and decertified tomorrow if a manufacturer changes the design, misses a re-audit, or fails an inspection. What you actually own after a purchase is a unit built under a certified design at the date of manufacture. That’s usually fine. But if you plan to trade or resell the lift in five to ten years, its resale value can be affected if the model was quietly delisted somewhere in between.

We check current ALI listing status on every model we sell as of the day of quote. If a manufacturer we carry loses certification on a specific model we stop selling that model within days. That’s part of what a specialist dealer adds versus a big-box freight-drop. If you’re buying automotive two post lifts and the seller can’t tell you the current listing status on the day you’re shopping, keep shopping.
