Along the Iowa-Nebraska border, in a shop that started as a chicken coop and ended up housing a small stable of restoration projects, we followed a collector through his first year with automotive two post lifts. The lift arrived in April, met its first big-block Chevelle in May, and by the following March had a slow-drift problem on the passenger-side cylinder. That drift turned into a hydraulic cylinder seal rebuild that we walked him through remotely over three days, and the lift is back to holding a car overnight without moving a millimeter. This is what a first year of real ownership looks like when the lift lives outside a corporate shop.

Getting Automotive Two Post Lifts Delivered to a Remote Shop

Trucking a four-thousand-pound crated lift to a remote farm shop on the Iowa-Nebraska border isn’t the same as dropping one at a strip-mall service center in Council Bluffs. Freight carriers charge for accessorial services, liftgate delivery, residential surcharge, limited-access fees, and if your shop doesn’t have a forklift or a covered dock, you pay for all three. Our collector had access to a neighbor’s telehandler, which knocked a few hundred dollars off the invoice, and we scheduled delivery for a weekday afternoon so we could be on-site to help offload.

The crate itself arrived clean. No forklift damage to the columns, no bent overhead beam, cables coiled and dry. We opened it in the driveway, verified the packing list against the invoice, and rolled the columns inside on furniture dollies. Anchor bolts, arm assemblies, and the hydraulic power unit came in separate cartons and we inventoried each one against the manual before the freight driver left. Missing hardware is the number-one call we get from remote installs, and if you don’t verify at delivery you’ll be waiting a week for the courier to bring you a twelve-dollar pin. On automotive two post lifts especially, take the extra thirty minutes at delivery to open every box. It’s cheaper to catch a missing part on the driveway than after the crate has been broken down.

Anchoring to a Slab That Was Poured Twenty Years Ago

The shop had a slab poured in 2004. Probably four inches, unknown PSI, no rebar to speak of. We drilled a test hole in the corner where the collector was willing to sacrifice a small chunk of concrete, and pulled a sample. It came back at about 3,200 PSI, which is above our minimum but not by much. The anchor spec for most automotive two post lifts assumes 3,000 PSI or better, so we were in the acceptable range with limited margin. We chose 3/4-inch by 5.5-inch wedge anchors rated for cracked concrete, drilled to spec with a rotary hammer and a masonry bit that we brought fresh out of the case.

The trick with old concrete is not to over-torque. Manufacturers spec somewhere around ninety to a hundred and ten foot-pounds, and if you crank past that on a marginal slab you’ll spider-crack around the anchor and lose your hold. We tightened to spec, verified pull-out with a torque wrench, and set the columns plumb using shims where the slab wasn’t perfectly level. Column plumb matters more than most people realize. A column that leans a half-degree over 11 feet of height puts side-load on the cylinder and accelerates seal wear. Which, in this story, is exactly what came back to bite us a year later. We didn’t know at the time that one column was 3/8 of a degree off plumb until we chased the cylinder problem. Lesson learned, and now on every install we verify both columns twice.

The First Six Months: Everything Worked

Between April and October the lift ran a big-block Chevelle up and down probably 150 times. It saw a 1970 K5 Blazer for a frame-off, a 1968 Camaro brake job, and enough project cars in and out of the barn that our collector logged over 200 total cycles by Halloween. Nothing broke. Cables held tension. Hydraulic fluid stayed clean. The safety pawls dropped audibly on both sides at every position. Arm restraints held under load. He topped off the reservoir once, a normal quart of AW-32 after break-in, and adjusted the equalizer cables a quarter inch at the six-week mark.

That’s the correct maintenance pattern for automotive two post lifts in the first six months, and if you’re seeing anything worse than that on a new lift, you have a problem to diagnose. Our collector kept a small logbook next to the power unit, date, cycles, fluid level, which turned into gold when the cylinder issue showed up. If you can’t remember when you last cycled the lift or topped off the fluid, you can’t tell a technician whether a problem is normal wear or a warranty defect. Notebooks and pencils are cheaper than diagnostic calls, and every serious hobbyist should keep one. We hand a fresh notebook to every install customer with the first entry already written in.

The Slow Drift That Started in Month Ten

In February he called us. A car left on the lift Friday evening was sitting almost two inches lower on the passenger side by Monday morning. Both safety locks were engaged, we could hear them holding, but the drift was real, and once he lowered the car and cycled the lift a few times, the drift showed on every raise. We started with the cheap tests: reservoir level, cylinder bleed screws, any visible weep at the fittings. Reservoir was low, but not empty. No weep at the fittings.

When we pulled the passenger-side cover, we saw a thin film of hydraulic fluid running down the outside of the cylinder body. The tell-tale sign of a seal that had started to bypass. That’s not a catastrophic failure. Cylinder seals on automotive two post lifts are consumables. They last five to fifteen years depending on use, ambient temperature, and how plumb the column was set. Ours was less than one year in, and the culprit was almost certainly the 3/8-degree column lean we didn’t catch on install. The side-load had chewed the seal in ten months instead of ten years. The Rebuild Kit and What Is Inside

A hydraulic cylinder rebuild kit for most automotive two post lifts contains the same short list of parts: a rod seal, a piston seal, a wiper, an O-ring or two for the end cap, and sometimes a bushing. Brand matters. A Rotary cylinder takes a Rotary kit, a Challenger cylinder takes a Challenger kit, and if you try to cross-ship a Weaver seal into a different brand cylinder, you’ll either round the rod or the seal will extrude out the wiper within a week.

We shipped our collector the correct kit for his lift, along with a small container of assembly grease and a printout of the sequence. He rented a hydraulic press to seat the piston seal, which was overkill. A rubber mallet and patience work fine. But he got the job done. Total parts cost was under two hundred and fifty dollars including the AW-32 fluid to refill the reservoir. Labor, if he’d shipped the cylinder to us, would have added a couple hundred more plus freight both directions, which is why we walked him through it over video call instead. Ten months of ownership, one seal rebuild, a slab lesson learned, and a lift that’s now back to holding a Chevelle overnight with zero drift. That’s an acceptable first year on a piece of equipment that’s going to serve him for the next thirty. We stock kits for every major brand we sell.

Reinstall, Bleed, and First Test Cycle

Reinstalling a rebuilt cylinder on automotive two post lifts is straightforward if you go slowly. Bolt the cylinder back to the carriage. Reconnect the hydraulic hose. Refill the reservoir with fresh AW-32 up to the fill line. Bleed the cylinder by cycling the lift to full height with no load, holding at the top for thirty seconds, and lowering it back down. Do this three or four times to purge air from the system. Air in a hydraulic circuit sounds like the power unit growling and looks like a lift that stutters on the way up.

Once the cycles run smooth, load a light vehicle, say a Miata, and cycle it a few times up and down. Check for any weep at the new seal, both at rest and under motion. If there’s no weep after twenty cycles, you’re done. Our collector shot us a video from his phone showing the lift rising smooth and silent with a Corvette on it, and the reservoir sight glass staying rock-steady at the fill line. That was the moment we knew the rebuild took. Total downtime from first drift to full return-to-service was nine days, most of which was shipping the kit. Actual wrench-time was probably six hours spread across two weekend afternoons. Not bad for a repair he’d never done before. Not many pieces of shop equipment are this owner-serviceable.

What He Would Tell Another Border-Country Collector

Our collector’s advice to anyone looking at automotive two post lifts for a rural shop: verify column plumb twice, keep a logbook, and don’t be afraid of a cylinder rebuild when the day comes. A lift is not a black box. Every part inside can be repaired or replaced by a mechanically competent owner with the right kit and a phone call for guidance.

He’d also tell you not to fear a slab that’s older than the lift. Old concrete can work fine if you test it and use the right anchors. And he’d remind you that a single afternoon of careful measurement at install saves a whole year of chasing symptoms later. If we were writing him a report card at year one, we’d give him an A on ownership discipline and a B-plus on install execution. The plumb error kept it from an A. The lift is now on a schedule of a fluid check every quarter, a cable inspection every six months, and a safety-lock drop test every visit. That’s the maintenance cadence we recommend for every rural install we do. It’s not much, and it protects a five-figure investment.
