An EV specialty shop owner in northwest Iowa called us convinced automotive two post lifts wouldn’t work for his business. He’d read online that EVs are too heavy, asymmetric arms are the only right answer, and pad extensions void warranties. Every one of those beliefs is wrong or at least incomplete, and this piece runs through the six myths we hear most often from EV shops considering their first lift. Some of these myths are marketing spin. Some are outdated information from the pre-EV era. All of them cost shops money if they act on them without checking the facts against a real service manual.

Myth one: automotive two post lifts and EV weight

Myth one: automotive two post lifts can’t handle EVs because EVs are too heavy. Reality: most EVs are heavy but not out-of-spec. A Model S weighs 4,500 to 4,900 pounds. A Model Y weighs around 4,400 pounds. A Rivian R1T weighs roughly 7,000 pounds. A Ford Lightning weighs 6,000 to 6,800 pounds. Standard 10,000 lb commercial two-post lifts handle all of these with meaningful capacity headroom. Where you need to step up to 12,000 or 15,000 lb capacity is for full-size EV trucks with towing packages, or for HD EV work vans like the Ford E-Transit at 9,500+ pounds GVWR. Even then, the capacity exists. You just need to spec correctly. The myth comes from the pre-EV era when 10K lifts were sold for 3,500-lb sedans and 6,000-lb trucks. Modern lift capacities are more than adequate. What matters more is arm position accuracy: EV battery packs run under the vehicle, and pad placement on manufacturer lift points is critical.

Myth two: asymmetric arms are always right

Myth two: asymmetric arms are always the right choice for two-post lifts. Reality: asymmetric arms have benefits (better door swing, easier interior access) and costs (less symmetric access for alignment work, slightly more complex arm geometry). For a general-service shop that does 60 percent oil-service work and needs the door open, asymmetric wins. For an alignment-heavy or restoration shop, symmetric wins. For an EV shop that does a mix of software service (door open, in-cabin diagnostic work) and battery-service work (lifting the battery), the answer depends on your mix. If most of your bookings are in-cabin work, asymmetric. If most are undercarriage work, symmetric. Both work for EVs. Don’t let a salesperson tell you asymmetric is the only right answer. It’s a common closing line but it’s not the whole picture. The northwest Iowa EV shop we quoted ended up going symmetric because his primary work was pack service and undercarriage inspection. He’d have picked asymmetric for a general dealership setup.

Myth three: symmetric can’t do alignment

Myth three: symmetric automotive two post lifts can’t do alignment. Reality: symmetric is generally better for alignment because you have equal working room on both sides of the vehicle. The myth comes from confusion between two-post alignment (where the wheels hang) and alignment-rack work (where the wheels sit on a rack with turnplates). For a full alignment machine setup, you want an alignment rack. Usually a scissor mid-rise with built-in turnplates and slip plates. For quick alignment checks or one-off toe adjustments on the two-post, symmetric works fine. Race shops and EV shops that need occasional alignment on a two-post do fine with symmetric. If alignment is 30 percent or more of your work, invest in a proper alignment rack or a scissor with turnplates. The two isn’t an either-or. Many shops run both a two-post for general work and an alignment rack for dedicated alignment jobs. The two-post carries the heavy service work; the scissor carries the alignment revenue. Both pay back independently.

Myth four: pad extensions void the warranty

Myth four: pad extensions void the lift warranty. Reality: manufacturer-supplied pad extensions and adapters are engineered into the warranty and rated for full lift capacity. Aftermarket or shop-made extensions may not be. On two-post lifts, the correct move for an EV shop is to buy the manufacturer’s rubber pad extensions in the heights the vehicle needs. Typically 3-inch or 5-inch extensions to reach frame or subframe pickup points that sit above the standard lift arm height. Rotary and Challenger both offer OEM extension kits. Using them is fine. Using a shop-fabricated wood block or a stack of 2x4s to reach a pickup point is not fine and will void warranty coverage and safety certification. The distinction is real: OEM extensions engineered to spec are approved. Jerry-rigs aren’t. If your EV work needs unusual pickup points, buy the OEM extensions and document the setup in your safety procedures. We stock the common heights and can ship them the same day for any lift we sell.

Myth five: EV battery packs block lift arms

Myth five: EV battery packs block two-post lift arms and make lifting impossible. Reality: most EV manufacturers publish specific lift points that give clear access for two-post arm placement. Tesla, Rivian, Ford, and GM all provide service lift-point diagrams in their factory service manuals. On a Model 3, you place pads at four factory-marked points that sit clear of the pack. On a Lightning, similar. On some earlier or smaller EVs the pack sits right at the pinch weld, and you need a longer arm extension to reach an alternate pickup point. But the point exists. The myth comes from technicians unfamiliar with EV lift-point documentation trying to use ICE-vehicle instincts. Read the factory service manual for each EV you service, verify pickup points before lifting, and use OEM extensions where needed. That’s a training investment, not an equipment limitation. Every EV shop we support has spent time drilling proper lift-point procedure with their techs. It’s worth the hour.

Myth six: overhead cutoff switches damage EV roofs

Myth six: overhead crossbeam cutoff switches damage EV roofs. Reality: standard overhead two-post lifts have a crossbeam cutoff switch that stops the lift at a preset height (typically 12 feet), preventing the vehicle roof from contacting the crossbeam. On a standard-height EV sedan or hatchback this is a non-issue. On tall SUVs like the Rivian R1S or lifted trucks, the cutoff may trigger before you reach full working height. The fix is a base-plate lift (no overhead crossbeam) or a low-ceiling model with a taller cutoff point. It’s a real consideration for lifted-truck and tall-SUV work but it’s not about EVs specifically. It’s about vehicle height. Don’t let anyone tell you EVs are uniquely incompatible with overhead lifts. They’re not. For the northwest Iowa shop we worked with, we spec’d a base-plate model to accommodate the Rivian R1T work he was expecting. Solved the ceiling constraint and eliminated the crossbeam question in one decision.

What actually matters for a northwest Iowa EV shop

After we cleared the myths, what actually mattered for the northwest Iowa EV shop was: enough capacity for full-size EV trucks with headroom (so we spec’d 12,000 lb); symmetric arm geometry for pack-service work; base-plate design to eliminate crossbeam interference on tall EVs; OEM pad extensions for factory lift points on multiple EV platforms; single-phase electrical hookup because he was in a leased building; and name-brand commercial construction for parts availability over a decade. Those six specs mapped to a specific product in our catalog and we quoted him a 12K symmetric base-plate Rotary. Total delivered cost landed in the low-to-mid five figures with install. He’d walked in expecting a much higher number based on what a competitor had quoted him and left able to make the investment work.
