Racing shops in the Des Moines metro live and die by turnaround time between rounds, and the lift bay is where that clock either runs fast or bleeds minutes. Start With the Vehicles, Not the Lift
A decision tree that starts with lift models is a marketing tree, not an engineering one. We always start with the heaviest vehicle you actually put on the lift, plus a 20 percent margin. A Spec Miata program can live comfortably on a 9,000 pound unit, but the moment you add a tow rig for tire changes or start renting bay time to a customer with a lifted diesel, the math changes. Automotive two post lifts do not run at capacity every day, but they need to survive the day they do. Pick your worst-case vehicle first, then work backwards.
For most Des Moines area race shops the answer lands between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds. That covers full-bodied sports cars, a loaded transporter dolly, and the occasional customer truck you might take in for cash flow between race weekends. Going bigger than 12,000 usually just costs money without opening new capability, unless you plan to service a Class A motorhome tow rig in the same bay. Once you have the capacity target, the next branch of the tree is electrical, and that is where a lot of race shops trip themselves up.
Single Phase or Three Phase: The Circuit Question
Almost every industrial building we quote in the Des Moines metro comes with three-phase available at the panel because the previous tenant ran a machine tool or a compressor. Race teams see the three-phase and assume they should spec a three-phase lift motor. In most cases it is not necessary. Modern automotive two post lifts run happily on 220-volt single phase drawing 25 to 30 amps, and single-phase motors are cheaper to service and easier to source replacements for on a Friday night before a race weekend. Unless you have a compelling reason, order single phase.
The exceptions are real but narrow. If you cycle the lift more than 40 times per shift, three phase gives you a slightly faster and cooler-running motor. If you already own a three-phase power unit and want a spare, matching phase makes sense. If the run from the panel to the lift is over 100 feet, three phase drops the voltage sag. Otherwise, spend the saved money on better arm restraints and a set of truck adapters. Symmetric Versus Asymmetric for a Race Bay
This is the branch of the tree where race shops most often ask for advice, because the answer depends on how you actually use the bay. Symmetric two-posts, where both columns sit square and the arms are equal length, favor heavier trucks and centered loads. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use unequal-length arms so the driver can step out of a sports car without banging the door on the column. For a bay that lives on Miatas, C7 Corvettes, and open-cockpit tube-frame cars, asymmetric wins almost every time.
Where the answer flips is when the race team also builds and maintains its own transporter or hauls a tow truck through the same bay. A dually 3500 or a Class 4 rollback sits off center in an asymmetric arm setup and you end up with a lift that will hold the weight but never feels balanced. In those cases we recommend a versymmetric configuration, which lets the arms slide to either orientation depending on the vehicle. Exhaust and Driveline Access: Arm Length Matters
The point of buying a two-post in a race shop is clear-shot access to the exhaust, driveshaft, and rear differential without a runway blocking your line of sight. To actually get that access, you need the right arm length. Standard three-stage front arms and telescoping rear arms reach from about 25 inches folded to 60 inches extended. A tube-frame car with a narrow wheelbase and low pickup points benefits from optional short-reach adapters, while a stretched cab truck needs the extended rear arms as a factory option. Order both if your program mixes body styles.
Adapter stack height is the other detail that pays off in a race bay. Most factory adapters give you three inches of stack, which is enough for a stock sedan but too short for a lowered coupe with rocker moldings. Order the tall adapter kit or the flip-up adapters that store on the arm. Race cars with pinch-welded rockers respond well to the polyurethane sliders that grip the seam without denting it. Ceiling Height, Overhead Bar, and Roll-Up Doors
Des Moines industrial buildings from the 1980s and 1990s often have 13 to 14 foot clear ceilings, which is plenty for standard-height automotive two post lifts. Newer flex-bay buildings sometimes drop to 12 feet clear because the developer poured in mezzanine allowance. Twelve feet is a problem for an overhead-cutoff two-post because the top of the equalizer bar sits between 11 feet 10 inches and 12 feet 4 inches depending on model. If you have exactly 12 feet, the tree branches to either a baseplate-style lift or an overhead unit with extended-height columns.
The other constraint is the roll-up door track. If you plan to close the door with a car on the lift, the door track has to clear the raised vehicle plus a couple of inches of margin. Most standard doors have an eight or ten foot header, which means you cannot lift much beyond four or five feet before the roof of the car interferes with the header. We spec around this by aligning the lift 18 to 24 inches back from the door line and by orienting the arms so the car nose points into the bay, giving the crew room to work with the door partially open in warmer months.
Cost, Freight, and What Bundles Actually Save
