Automotive two post lifts get bought for one job and end up doing twelve. That is the reality of a 2-post in a small independent shop. Symmetric vs asymmetric — which loads better for wheel work
A symmetric 2-post positions the vehicle centered between the columns with equal arms front and rear. An asymmetric 2-post rotates the columns and runs shorter front arms and longer rears, which lets the driver step out without banging the door on the column. For wheel bearing work in a small independent shop, asymmetric is almost always the better buy — you climb in and out of the vehicle constantly, and door swing matters. Symmetric machines shine for heavy trucks that will not fit the asymmetric envelope. On the Iowa-Missouri border we sell far more asymmetric 10K units than symmetric because the vehicle mix skews to passenger cars and half-tons. That is the frame we recommend for a general independent shop doing wheel bearings plus brakes plus most of what walks in the door. The site survey we do before we ship anywhere near the border
Before we quote install, we ask for concrete thickness, concrete age, ceiling height, door and header height, and power. A 10K 2-post wants 4 inches of unbroken, unreinforced concrete rated 3,000 psi minimum. Rural shops on the Iowa-Missouri border often have older 3.5-inch slabs poured for a shed that later became a shop; we ask for a core sample or a firm answer before we ship anchors. Ceiling height for a 10K overhead 2-post runs about 11.5 to 12 feet clear; for a lower ceiling we spec baseplate. Door and header measurements matter because you have to drive the vehicle in — a lifted 6-foot-6 pickup with a hood-mount snorkel does not fit a 7-foot header, no matter what the lift specs say. That is a site problem, not a lift problem, and we would rather flag it before the truck rolls than after your tech tries to squeeze one through.
Automotive two post lifts and the concrete question
Concrete is where used-lift shoppers get burned. The lift itself does not care about your slab, but the anchors do. A 10K automotive two post lift transfers roughly 12,000 pounds of dynamic load into the anchor pattern under each column when the vehicle is at extension. If the slab is too thin, too old, or too broken up around expansion joints, the anchors pull. We have re-anchored a lift for a shop on the Iowa-Missouri border where the previous installer set anchors 4 inches from a saw-cut joint — the concrete cracked under load on the third lift of the day. Our install crew brings a hammer drill, a rotary hammer, and a core drill, and we set anchors to the manufacturer’s specified edge distance every time. Ceiling and door clearance for a border-region shop
Most Iowa-Missouri border shops we install into are pole barns or older masonry buildings with 12-foot sidewalls and a 10- or 12-foot service door. That is enough for an overhead 10K 2-post with clear-floor design. If the shop has 10-foot sidewalls, we spec baseplate and warn you that the cross-tube at the floor will be in the way of a rolling transmission jack. If the door is 10 feet tall, you can drive a passenger car and a half-ton pickup in but not a lifted diesel with a snorkel. We ask you to measure and we ask you to send a photo. The photo saves problems more often than the measurement does — we can see the door header, the rafter spacing, and the electrical panel in one shot, and we can call out the trip hazards you have stopped noticing after a decade in the building.
Power drop — single-phase vs three-phase for wheel work
Automotive two post lifts run on either single-phase 208-230V or three-phase 208-460V. Rural shops on the Iowa-Missouri border are usually single-phase; you plan for that. A single-phase 10K lift draws roughly 25 to 30 amps on a 30-amp breaker. You need a dedicated circuit and a lockable disconnect within sight of the lift — code, and common sense. Three-phase is faster to raise and draws less amperage per leg, so if you already have three-phase in the shop, take it. If you are looking at bringing in three-phase for one lift, it is rarely worth the meter change unless you also have a compressor and a welder that would benefit. We spec the motor with your available service, not against it, and we send the amp draw and breaker size on a single page to hand to your electrician.
Arm reach that matters for wheel bearing service
Wheel bearing work lives at the four corners of the vehicle. That means your pad points sit close to the wheels — the outside pinch weld or the frame rail rearward of the front wheel arch. Arm reach and drop matter. A three-stage arm with a two-stage drop lets you get a low-profile car and a lifted half-ton on the same lift without re-adjusting the pads every time. Automotive two post lifts with fixed-length arms are almost always the wrong buy for a border-region shop that sees a mixed fleet. We spec three-stage front and rear on every 10K lift we ship, and we include a stackable pad kit so you can hit odd frame heights on modified trucks. Small thing; makes a real difference over a year of daily use, and it is the difference between a fifteen-minute pad set and a five-minute one.
