Automotive two post lifts in a farm shop live a different life than lifts in a commercial bay. A shop in southern Minnesota called us in February — the owner runs cars, half-tons, and the occasional tractor front-end job in a 40-by-60 machine shed with a slab poured in the 1980s. He wanted to do alignments too. That combination — mixed vehicle work, older concrete, rural power, alignment work on a 2-post — is a checklist project. Every item on the list can send the wrong lift to the wrong shop and cost thousands to fix. Here is the checklist we walked him through, and the one we walk through with every rural southern Minnesota farm shop that calls us at 800-674-9302.

Concrete — what we measure before shipping
Farm-shop slabs vary. Some are 6 inches of vibrated 4,000-psi concrete poured over rebar. Some are 3 inches of what was on the truck that day. Automotive two post lifts need at least 4 inches of unreinforced 3,000-psi concrete for standard anchors, and 6 inches for heavier machines. If you cannot answer thickness and rating with a document, we ask for a core sample — a couple hundred dollars in coring beats a slab tear-out later. Age matters too; concrete gains strength for years, but older slabs sometimes have alkali-silica reaction or freeze-thaw damage that we cannot see from the surface. In southern Minnesota, freeze-thaw is real, and slabs that sat under a leaky roof for a decade often carry hidden spider cracks. We look at the slab where the columns will sit, not where the shop office is. A photo of both is worth a lot before we quote anchors.
Ceiling height and rafters in older farm shops
Machine sheds built in the 1970s and 1980s in southern Minnesota often have 12-foot sidewalls with 2×8 rafters and a purlin run that eats another foot of clear ceiling. Add a fluorescent fixture at the low point and you can be under 11 feet clear before you know it. Overhead 2-post lifts need 11-foot-6 minimum at the shackle rise. Measure clear ceiling at the exact spot the lift will sit, not at the center of the shed. If you have less than 11 feet, we spec floor-plate. If you have 12 or more, overhead runs cleaner. Send us a photo of the ceiling from the intended lift location. Every farm shop we quote gets the ceiling photo before we send a lift model number, because the wrong assumption at this step is the most expensive mistake you can make in the ordering process.
Automotive two post lifts and the alignment-work compromise
Alignment work traditionally lives on a 4-post alignment rack with slip plates and turntables. Automotive two post lifts can do alignment work if you accept two compromises — a portable turntable pad set and slip plates you place on the arms, and a duty-cycle penalty because you set up the plates every time. For a farm shop that does one or two alignments a week alongside general service, that trade is usually worth it. The 2-post buys you brake, driveline, and exhaust access the alignment rack cannot give you at all, and the alignment work you can still do — just slower. If alignments are your primary revenue line, you want a 4-post rack instead. Ask us to lay out both options; a mixed rural shop usually lands on a 2-post plus a portable alignment tool that stores on a wall rack when it is not in use.
Power drop — what your electrician needs to know
Farm shops usually have 200A single-phase 240V service and rarely have three-phase. A 10K 2-post runs fine on single-phase; it draws about 25 to 30 amps on lift, sitting on a 30-amp breaker with a dedicated disconnect within sight. If your panel is full or your service is undersized because it also runs a grain dryer or a hog barn, plan for a subpanel. We do not install the electrical drop — that is your electrician’s job — but we hand your electrician the motor spec, the disconnect location, and the breaker size on a single page. Bring us the panel photo along with the ceiling photo and we can size the whole install before we quote. Farm-shop panels are usually the surprise variable; solve it early, and your electrician can plan the drop into their existing schedule instead of scrambling.
Anchor pattern and edge distance
Every automotive two post lift has a manufacturer-published anchor bolt pattern and a minimum edge distance from any joint, crack, or slab edge. In a farm shop with an older slab, saw-cut control joints run every 10 to 12 feet, and the middle of the bay is usually the best anchor real estate. We measure edge distance to the nearest joint before we drill. If the intended lift location puts an anchor closer than the minimum, we move the lift a foot in one direction rather than setting an anchor that will pull. We use wedge anchors sized to the manufacturer spec, torqued with a calibrated wrench, and re-torqued after 24 hours of settling. That step gets skipped by weekend installers and it matters — a re-torque check is what keeps the anchor tight through the first temperature cycle.
Delivery access to a rural site
Automotive two post lifts ship in one crate per column plus one carton for the arms, hydraulics, and controls. Total shipping weight for a 10K 2-post is around 1,800 pounds. The freight carrier drops the crate at the road; you unload with a skid steer or forklift. For farm shops on gravel driveways in southern Minnesota, we spec liftgate delivery and inside-driveway drop where the carrier allows. Winter drops can freeze the pallet to the ground — we schedule around weather when we can. If your driveway is impassable in February, we hold the shipment at our warehouse and deliver in March.
