Automotive two post lifts running high-volume oil change and fluid service work live and die by their electrical setup. The lift itself was easy to spec. The electrical drop was the whole conversation. Panel space, phase, breaker size, and disconnect placement — every one of those items has burned a shop that skipped the pre-install walk-through. Why body shops keep a 2-post for fluid work
Collision repair shops keep a 2-post because vehicles come in for pre-repair inspection and post-repair verification, and both benefit from underbody access. Fluid work — oil changes, transmission service, coolant flushes, differential fluid — piggybacks on the 2-post because the lift is already there. Body shops that add a lube bay to their revenue mix use their 2-post more heavily than a pure-collision shop does. Automotive two post lifts in a fluid-service bay average 12 to 18 lift cycles a day; a pure body shop 2-post averages 3 to 5. The duty cycle matters for cable and cylinder wear, and it decides the electrical spec because the motor spends real time under load and the panel drop has to feed it without nuisance tripping.
Automotive two post lifts and single-phase reality
Most body shops in northeast Iowa run on single-phase 240V service, the same as residential-scale commercial electrical. A 10K or 12K single-phase 2-post draws roughly 25 to 30 amps on lift, sitting on a dedicated 30-amp double-pole breaker. That is a real load — you cannot share the circuit with an air compressor or a welder. The dedicated circuit rule exists because motor inrush current can trip breakers if the circuit is shared, and a tripped breaker on a lift under load is a bad day. Automotive two post lifts spec single-phase motors from the factory in the sizes we sell for body shops; do not add a phase converter unless you are already running three-phase equipment for other reasons that already justified the meter upgrade.
Three-phase — where you actually find it
Older industrial-zoned buildings in northeast Iowa sometimes have legacy three-phase 208V service. If your body shop is one of them, the three-phase 2-post motor draws less amperage per leg, runs cooler, and often raises faster. Automotive two post lifts in three-phase configuration are cheaper to run over the life of the lift because the motor efficiency is meaningfully better. If you have three-phase already, take it. If you are considering upgrading service from single-phase to three-phase for one lift, the utility charges and panel work rarely pencil out for one machine — you would want at least a compressor, a welder, and a lift on three-phase for the upgrade to pay off. Ask your electrician for the meter change cost before you commit, and get a real number from the utility for the service upgrade too.
Amp draw and breaker sizing
Every automotive two post lift has a nameplate on the motor listing amperage at rated voltage. A single-phase 220V 10K lift is typically 24 to 28 amps running, on a 30-amp breaker. A three-phase 208V equivalent is 12 to 15 amps per leg, on a 20- or 25-amp breaker per manufacturer spec. Body shop foremen sometimes assume the breaker size on the panel — do not. Read the motor nameplate, and match the breaker to the manufacturer’s install manual. Oversized breakers do not protect the motor; undersized breakers trip under inrush. We include the breaker spec on every install quote we send, and we hand the electrical wiring diagram to your electrician before install day. Small paperwork step; avoids a real problem that shows up on the first busy morning of oil changes.
Wiring the disconnect — what the electrician needs
Code requires a lockable disconnect switch within sight of the lift so a tech can positively de-energize the motor for service. In practice, we place the disconnect on the column-side wall about 5 feet off the floor within 4 to 6 feet of the lift. The disconnect breaks the incoming feed to the motor and lets a tech tag out for maintenance. Your electrician wires the disconnect between the panel breaker and the motor junction box using appropriately sized wire — usually 10 AWG for single-phase 30-amp installs, 12 AWG for three-phase 20-amp. We hand your electrician the disconnect specification along with the motor nameplate photo. Do not skip the disconnect because it looks like an extra step — it is the code step that keeps the tech safe when he goes into the top of the column for a valve check.
Duty cycle for high-volume oil changes
A body shop lube bay running 12 to 18 oil changes a day cycles the lift motor 24 to 36 times per shift including empty lowers. Motor duty rating matters. Automotive two post lifts we spec for high-volume fluid work carry an 80-percent or continuous duty rating on the motor. Cheap import lifts sometimes run 25-percent duty motors that overheat under high-cycle use — one summer of daily oil changes and the motor windings fail. We do not sell those. Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and Atlas motors on the lifts we ship are rated for the cycle counts a body shop lube bay will throw at them, and the warranty covers them under normal duty. That is a real difference and it shows up in year three when the cheap motor lets go on a Tuesday morning and the bay is down.
