A retired welder in the Sioux City area emailed us about setting up his first real restoration bay — a 1968 Camaro project sitting on jack stands in the corner of a 30×40 pole barn, plans to add a 1970s pickup and eventually a customer restoration or two. He wanted to know how automotive two post lifts fit into a bay laid out for long-term project work rather than quick service. That’s a different set of tradeoffs than a shop turning cars every day. Here’s the layout logic we walked him through, plus the specific choices that hold up for a first-time home-garage restorer over a multi-year build.

Why Restoration Bays Need Different Automotive Two Post Lifts Planning
A restoration bay differs from a service bay in one key dimension: dwell time. A restoration project sits on the lift for weeks or months, not minutes. That changes what you optimize for. Service bays want fast in-and-out, so the lift goes near the door and the tool wall stays behind. Restoration bays want workspace around the vehicle at ride height, so the lift goes centered in the bay with clearance on all four sides. Two-post lifts work great for both use cases, but the bay planning is nearly opposite. You want enough front clearance to open the hood fully at chest height, enough rear clearance to swing a rolling toolbox behind the rear bumper, and side clearance to run a MIG welder cart down either flank. Twenty-four feet of bay depth is the practical minimum for a restoration setup on a car-size vehicle.
Bay Depth: The 24-Foot Rule
On a 30-by-40 pole barn like the Sioux City project, you get 30 feet of depth to work with. That’s plenty. But depth isn’t just about the vehicle — you need bay entry room in front of the vehicle to walk around the fenders, and toolbox room behind. Twenty-four feet gives you a 15-foot vehicle centered with roughly 4.5 feet of walk-around on either end. Anything less than 24 feet and the bay starts to feel like a puzzle every time you try to open the trunk. Automotive two post lifts sit right in the middle of that depth math. The columns take about 3.5 feet of bay depth accounting for the base-plate footprint, and the arms swing another 4 to 5 feet outward when folded. Plan the layout with the columns 12 feet apart across the bay width and centered on the depth, and you’ll have room to work.
Where the Columns Should Actually Go
The default column-to-column spacing is around 11 feet. That gives you enough width for most passenger vehicles to sit centered without the doors touching the columns. In a restoration bay, we usually spec the columns closer to one long wall so the far side of the bay stays open for a workbench and toolbox row. Don’t push them all the way against the wall — the arms need room to swing fully open on the wall side. About 5 feet from the wall to the near column is the sweet spot; that gives arm clearance while still opening up the far side of the bay. On the Sioux City install we ran the columns along the north wall of the pole barn, centered on the depth of the building, with the workbench and welding station on the south side and the roll-up door on the east.
Workbench, Tool Cart, and Air Compressor Placement
For restoration work, you’re going to be back and forth to the workbench constantly — grinding brackets, dressing welds, laying out parts. Put the workbench on the wall opposite the lift columns, running the full depth of the bay so you have space for a vise, a chop saw, and a small welding station. Air compressor goes in a corner with hard-plumbed lines to the lift bay so you don’t drag hoses through the work zone. Rolling tool cart lives at the rear of the lift for daily work and can be pushed to the workbench when needed. This layout keeps the automotive two post lifts area itself uncluttered while giving you fast access to everything. Do not put anything permanent within 3 feet of the lift columns or arm swing path. That includes chairs, storage racks, and space heaters. The lift needs a clear operating zone.
Overhead Lighting Around the Lift
Restoration work at ride height requires light coming from multiple angles — a single ceiling fixture directly overhead casts shadows exactly where you’re trying to see. We spec four LED fixtures around the lift, roughly 6 feet off the vehicle centerline in a rectangle pattern, mounted at the ceiling. That gives even light on the underside of the vehicle when the lift is at ride height and full light on the fenders and hood when it’s dropped. Color temperature matters too. For restoration work identifying subtle paint or metal color variations, 4000K to 5000K daylight-neutral is the correct choice. Warmer 3000K light hides paint defects. Cheaper on the front end and more expensive over the life of a restoration project. Get the lighting right when the lifts go in and you won’t be running extension-cord work lights three years later.
Storing a Project Long-Term on a Lift
This is where automotive two post lifts genuinely shine for restoration. A vehicle can sit on the lift at any raised height for months provided you lock the safety latches at the lowest position that gives you working clearance, don’t leave the hydraulic pump under pressure — the latches carry the load, not the hydraulics — and do a monthly visual inspection of the latch engagement, cable condition, and cylinder for any weep. The Camaro project mentioned in the opening will sit on the lift for probably two years across body, drivetrain, paint, and reassembly stages. That’s normal restoration timing. A well-maintained two-post handles that use case without complaint. Get the annual ALI inspection anyway — it’s the safety and insurance move for long-dwell setups.
The Sioux City Install: What We’d Do Differently
Two things we’d change if we did the Sioux City install again. First, we’d run 220V power to the lift location before pouring the slab pad, not after. Trenching later meant a saw-cut through fresh concrete, which is uglier and slower. Second, we’d install a shop vac drop line at the lift columns for cleanup. Restoration work generates fine metal dust from grinding, and a permanent vac drop at each column beats dragging a portable across the bay. Everything else about the layout of the automotive two post lifts held up.
