Heaviest vehicle in the fleet was a Class 7 medium-duty at around 26,000 lb loaded, which put us above the 10,000 and 12,000-lb consumer-grade two-post platforms. That meant we were looking at 15,000-lb, 18,000-lb, or 30,000-lb automotive two post lifts depending on the exact vehicle profile. The owner wanted to store the fleet in one bay through the off-season and service them one at a time on the lift. That combined-use pattern rules out really cheap platforms and points toward commercial-grade options that will cycle heavy weekly use without wear-driven downtime.
Overhead Automotive Two Post Lifts: Cost and Requirements
Overhead-style automotive two post lifts route the equalizer cables and hydraulic lines through a beam that spans between the tops of the two columns. That beam sits above the tallest vehicle you’ll ever lift, so the ceiling clearance requirement is roughly your tallest vehicle height plus the lift’s maximum rise plus about 12 inches of beam clearance. For a 12-foot-tall service truck at full rise, that’s over 15 feet of clear ceiling needed. Overhead lifts run a mid to upper price tier compared to baseplate on the same capacity, and installation is more labor-intensive because the beam has to be leveled, torqued, and cable-routed precisely. In a shop with the ceiling height to support it, overhead is cleaner — no floor crossbar to trip over — but the price and install time add up.
Baseplate Automotive Two Post Lifts: Cost and Requirements
Baseplate models route the cables through a low crossbar at the floor level between the columns. The crossbar is roughly 3 inches tall on modern designs, low enough to drive over with normal truck tires but still a floor-level obstruction. Baseplate lifts cost less to buy and less to install — no ceiling work, faster leveling, simpler cable routing. On the same 15,000-lb capacity, baseplate is often 20 to 25 percent less than overhead in total delivered cost. For the western Illinois shop, we could get away with baseplate because the ceiling was 15 feet flat, and the crossbar wasn’t a workflow concern for the truck-focused operation. Baseplate is also more forgiving of ceiling-mounted equipment — HVAC, lighting, air-line drops, whatever’s already up there doesn’t have to move.
The Slab Question That Changes Everything
This is where the price gets real. Two-post lifts rated for 15,000 lb and above want a minimum 6-inch slab at 3,000 PSI, and for 18,000-lb-plus lifts you’re looking at 6.5 to 8 inches depending on manufacturer. The Illinois shop had an unknown-depth slab. We core-drilled at both anchor locations and found 5.5 inches — below spec for a 15,000-lb overhead but acceptable for baseplate with the right anchor design. Alternative would have been sawing out a lift-pad section and pouring a 12-inch reinforced pad, which adds a mid-four-figure line item to the cost breakdown. That single decision — going baseplate on the existing slab versus overhead with a new pad — was worth several thousand dollars. Anyone budgeting a heavy-duty two-post install without a slab evaluation is going to get surprised on invoice day.
