When a small RV and trailer service shop just outside Waukee called us about automotive two post lifts, they were doing wheel bearing service on tandem-axle trailers with a floor jack, a stack of cribbing, and a lot of crawling around on a cold concrete floor. Their tech was in his fifties and his knees were telling him about it every night. We spent a year with that shop — from the first site survey through the pour cure, the install crew, the first bearing repack, and the first annual inspection. This article is that whole timeline, honestly told, because most of what people get wrong about lift ownership happens before the truck ever shows up with the columns on it.

The Site Survey Nobody Wants to Pay For

The shop had a 40×60 steel building with a 14-foot door and an unknown slab. That last part is the whole ballgame. We ask three questions on every survey: how thick is the concrete, what is the compressive strength, and how much clear height do you actually have to the lowest obstruction — not to the peak of the truss, to the sprinkler head or the conduit run or the radiant tube hanger. In this building the trusses gave 13 feet 8 inches, but a gas line dropped to 11 feet 2 inches directly over where they wanted the bay. That single measurement moved the lift eight feet north and saved a very expensive mistake.

We cored the slab in two spots. It came back at four and a half inches over compacted fill with no visible rebar. That is thinner than the four-inch, 3,000 PSI minimum most manufacturers publish for a 10,000 lb clearfloor unit, and it was borderline. Rather than gamble, we specified two four-by-four-foot pads cut and re-poured at eight inches of 4,000 PSI with mesh, cured 28 days. That added roughly two weeks and a modest cost to the project, and it is the single reason this installation has been trouble-free. Anchor pullout is the most common failure mode we see on used automotive two post lifts that were dropped onto whatever slab happened to be there, and it is entirely preventable with a core sample and a little patience.

Choosing Configuration for Trailers and Motorhome Chassis

An RV and trailer shop is not a car shop. The vehicles are long, the frames are narrow, the axles hang out past the body, and the weight distribution is nothing like a sedan. The owner initially assumed he needed a four-post drive-on. We talked him out of it for his primary bay, because four-posts put runways under the tires — exactly where you need access for wheel bearing work. He needed the wheels free and hanging, which is what a two-post does natively.

We went with an asymmetric clearfloor unit at 12,000 lb capacity with three-stage front arms and telescoping rear arms. The three-stage fronts matter enormously on travel trailers with low, wide frame rails and on cab-over chassis where the pickup points are tucked in behind a skirt. The extra capacity above his heaviest regular unit — a 6,000 to 8,000 lb tandem trailer — was not about safety margin alone. It bought him taller columns, a wider drive-through, and a beefier carriage that will not feel tired in ten years. When people compare automotive two post lifts on capacity alone they miss that the whole structure scales with it. He also added a set of frame cradle adapters and a pair of 6-inch stack pads, because trailer frames sit lower than any car and the standard adapter stack simply will not reach without them.

Install Day: What Actually Happens in Eight Hours

Our crew showed up at seven with a two-man team, a hammer drill, a rotary laser, and a torque wrench that gets calibrated. The columns came off the trailer on a pallet jack. First hour is layout: snap the centerline, verify square with diagonals, mark anchor holes, and check that the drive-through clearance actually clears the door swing and the parts washer nobody mentioned during the survey. Second hour is drilling — twenty-eight holes into fresh eight-inch pads, vacuumed clean, because anchor adhesion in a dusty hole is a fiction.

Columns up and plumbed by mid-morning. Then the overhead beam, the equalization cables, the hydraulic lines, and the power unit. We set the power unit on the driver-side column with a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit that the shop’s electrician had already run — we always want that done before we arrive, because sitting on the clock waiting for a panel is the most expensive hour in the whole project. Cables get tensioned, the carriages get run to full height empty, the safety locks get checked at every position on both sides, and then we cycle it under load. The final step is the one people skip: we walk the owner through the daily and monthly checks, hand him the manual, and label the lock release and the emergency stop. Well-installed automotive two post lifts fail from neglect far more often than from defect.

First Wheel Bearing Job on the New Lift

Two days after commissioning they had a 7,000 lb tandem boat trailer in with a growling curbside bearing. Under the old method that was a two-hour job with a jack, blocks, and a lot of getting up and down. On the lift, the tech pulled the hubs at chest height, packed both sides, replaced one race that had spun, and had the trailer back on the ground in under an hour. He billed the same rate. That is the entire economic argument for a lift compressed into one repair order.

The subtler win showed up over the following months. Wheel bearing service on trailers is dirty, and doing it at standing height meant the tech could actually see the grease pattern and the wear on the spindle instead of guessing by feel in bad light. He started catching bad spindles and marginal seals he would have missed, which turned single-bearing jobs into properly documented axle services. The shop also stopped declining walk-in bearing work because it was too much hassle. Within six months, axle and brake service on trailers went from an occasional favor to a real revenue line. We hear this pattern constantly from shops that add automotive two post lifts — the equipment does not just make existing work faster, it makes work you were turning away suddenly worth doing.

Month Six: The Problems That Showed Up

Nothing broke, but two things needed attention. First, the arm restraint gears on the driver’s side started skipping — the pins were not fully engaging when the arms were swung to a shallow angle. That is almost always debris packed into the gear teeth, and it was. Ten minutes with a pick, a wire brush, and a shot of spray lube fixed it. It would not have fixed itself, and an arm that swings under load is exactly how vehicles come off lifts.

Second, the equalization cables had stretched, which is completely normal in the first several months as the swages seat. One side was reaching the lock notch a beat before the other, and you could see about a quarter inch of carriage height difference at full extension. We re-tensioned both cables to spec and rechecked lock synchronization at three heights. If you ignore that, the lift keeps working while quietly loading one column harder than the other, and eventually you are buying cables early. We also topped the reservoir with ISO 32 hydraulic oil — not ATF, not “whatever was on the shelf,” which we find in reservoirs more often than we would like. Our advice to anyone with new equipment: schedule a 90-day and 6-month check for the first year, then settle into the annual cadence. Cables, anchors, and lock timing are the three items that tell you everything.

The First Annual Inspection and Real Cost of Ownership

At twelve months we did a full ANSI/ALI-style inspection: anchor torque on all twenty-eight bolts, cable condition and tension, sheave wear, hydraulic hose chafe points, cylinder for seep, lock engagement at every notch, overhead shutoff bar function, and a load test. Anchors held torque. Cables were within spec after the six-month adjustment. One hydraulic fitting had a slow weep that we replaced on the spot. That was the whole list.

On money: the lift, freight, the concrete work, the electrical, and professional installation landed in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on how you count the slab. Annual upkeep runs in the low hundreds — inspection, oil, a lube kit, and the occasional fitting. Against that, the shop added a service line and cut roughly forty minutes off every axle job. It paid for itself somewhere in month seven by their own accounting, and that ignores the value of a tech whose back and knees still work at sixty. What We Would Tell the Next Waukee Shop

Do the core sample. It costs almost nothing compared to re-pouring after the fact or, worse, discovering the problem when an anchor moves under a loaded vehicle. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the ceiling. Get the electrical run before install day. Buy more capacity and taller columns than your heaviest vehicle demands, because the price difference between a 10,000 and a 12,000 lb unit is small and the difference in how the equipment feels in year eight is not. Buy the adapters you actually need for your vehicle mix up front, not as an afterthought when a trailer is sitting in the bay.
