The columns do not sit on the slab — they anchor into it, and the manufacturer’s spec sheet dictates minimum thickness, minimum PSI, and edge clearance from control joints. For a Rotary SPOA10 that means 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete with three feet of clearance from the nearest control joint. Most 1990s-era body shop slabs are four inches, sometimes less near the edges, and often 2,500 PSI or unspecified.
When the slab does not meet spec, the options are to saw-cut and pour new pads under each column, or shim the column and hope. We do not recommend the second one — the arm-restraint safety-cam geometry depends on the column being perfectly plumb, and an out-of-plumb column will eat cables. The cost of doing new pads is real: two 4x4x8-inch pads at 4,000 PSI with new anchors typically runs in the low four figures depending on local labor rates.
