The certification is model-specific — a Rotary SPOA10 that carries ALI Gold does not automatically mean the entire Rotary catalog is Gold-certified.
For a family garage running a brake and rotor bay, ALI Gold matters for two reasons. First, insurance carriers increasingly ask about ALI certification when they underwrite a small-shop policy. A shop with certified automotive two post lifts often gets a better rate, or at least avoids the extra questions during renewal. Between the columns you get roughly 110 inches of drive-through width — enough for a full-size pickup but tight for a dual-rear-wheel truck.
Arms are the real story for brake work. On an asymmetric 10K lift, the front arms are typically shorter three-stage swing arms that fold in behind the front wheels, letting you park the car with the front axle roughly at the column line. The rear arms extend farther back to reach the rear pinch welds. Fully collapsed, front arms measure about 25 inches; fully extended, they push out past 55 inches. For brake service, that range matters — you want the pad to sit exactly under a factory jack point, and the arm needs to swing to any wheelbase from a Miata to a Suburban without a fight.
Why Brake Service Loves Symmetric vs Asymmetric
The asymmetric-versus-symmetric decision comes up on every family-garage quote, and the answer for brake service is more nuanced than the marketing brochures suggest. Symmetric automotive two post lifts have columns rotated so the arms are equal length front and rear, which centers the vehicle between the columns. Asymmetric lifts rotate the columns and use unequal arm lengths, so the vehicle sits with more mass toward the rear of the lift.
For pure brake work on a mixed vehicle mix, asymmetric is usually the better call because it moves the door opening past the column when the vehicle is raised. That means a tech can get in and out of the driver’s seat with the parking brake on and the wheels off, which happens more often than you would think during a brake bleed or a pedal test. Symmetric is better when the shop lifts a lot of trucks and vans, because the mass balances better between columns. If half your work is passenger cars and half is trucks, we usually recommend a versymmetric or bi-symmetric lift that rotates the arms through both geometries. Hydraulic Sync and Cable Systems
The two columns on a two-post lift have to move in sync, and the sync is achieved either by an equalizing cable system routed under the floor or overhead, or by a hydraulic-only system that uses matched cylinders and precise flow control. For family garages doing high-volume brake work, we usually recommend a cable-equalized lift because the cables give a positive mechanical link between the columns even if a hydraulic issue develops.
The cables themselves are wear items. On automotive two post lifts, cable inspection should be part of the monthly PM routine — you are looking for fraying, kinks, and stretched swage fittings at the ends. Rotary and Challenger both use six-by-nineteen wire rope with specific breaking-strength ratings; a genuine OEM replacement cable is not the place to save money by buying an off-brand from a marketplace. Anchor and Concrete Requirements
Every ALI-certified two-post lift install has documented concrete and anchor requirements. The typical spec is 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb lift, with wedge anchors sunk to a specified depth. On paper that sounds simple. In practice, a lot of southwest Iowa family garages are working on concrete that was poured in the 1970s over questionable base, and the actual thickness and strength can be all over the map.
When we do a pre-install site visit, we drill a small test hole at the intended anchor location to verify concrete thickness. If it is under 4.25 inches or if we hit voids, we discuss options: pouring a proper pad reinforcement, relocating the lift to a better section of the floor, or in some cases moving to a flush-mount lift that uses different anchor geometry. For high-volume brake shops, the anchor question matters double because every raise-and-lower cycle stresses the anchors. Lighting is the other underrated piece. Brake service is detail work — you are inspecting caliper slides, measuring pad thickness, and checking rotor runout.
