Iowa concrete of that vintage in a commercial shop context is typically four to five inches thick with rebar at eighteen-inch centers. We core-sampled at each anchor location before delivery — a two-hour job with a small coring rig — and confirmed four and three-quarter inches with rebar exactly where the manufacturer’s install manual required it to be clear. Both of his automotive two post lifts could be anchored to spec.
If the core sample had come back at three and a half inches, or if rebar had been in an anchor location, the install would have been different. Options at that point include drilling epoxy-set anchors, pouring a supplemental concrete pad beneath the columns, or in a worst case, replacing the slab section. We would rather find out on the pre-install core sample than during the anchor drilling on install day, which is why we do the core sample as a routine step on any install where the slab age or spec is uncertain. Arm Reach and Pickup Point Numbers

Concrete thickness and rebar location — verified by core sample. Arm reach against typical vehicle wheelbase — clear at full extension. Ceiling clearance against full-stroke height — clear with four inches of margin. Every dimension on the sanity check came back positive before he committed a nickel.
