How the safety cam actually engages an arm restraint
Every certified two-post lift in North America carries an ALI Gold Label that ties directly to the arm-restraint mechanism. The safety cam is a spring-loaded gear that drops teeth into a matching ring at the base of each swing arm the instant the lift takes weight. Once the pads touch a vehicle and the column starts to rise, that ring locks. The arms cannot swing until the lift is fully lowered and unloaded. This is why on a dealer floor a technician can walk under a raised vehicle — pull an exhaust hanger, drop a driveshaft, lean on a subframe — without the arm shifting a quarter-inch.
Where dealerships get burned is when a shop lets the safety-cam ring get chewed up. Techs bump the swing arm at low load, teeth skip, and now the cam only engages on three out of four teeth. Rotary and Challenger both sell the cam gear as a service part and we stock them in Ames. Symmetric versus asymmetric geometry and exhaust access
A symmetric column has both arms the same length and vehicles center on the posts. An asymmetric column rotates the columns roughly 30 degrees and puts more of the vehicle behind the posts, giving a technician clean door swing. For a general-purpose dealership doing everything from a Fiesta to a Tundra, we push clients toward the asymmetric variant every time. Exhaust access is why. On modern V-shaped exhaust routing under a 3/4-ton truck, the driver-side downpipe sits inches from the front column on a symmetric setup. On an asymmetric, that same downpipe hangs in front of the column and is much easier to unbolt.
The tradeoff is that asymmetric arms are directional. Front arms are shorter, rear arms are longer, and every rise puts the drive-in wheel spread at a slightly different position. On a floor running six or eight bays side by side, this matters less than techs think — but on a mixed dealership where half the vehicles are lifted trucks and half are compacts, we sometimes spec versa-symmetric arms so both geometries live on the same lift and the technician can pick per vehicle.
Driveline clearance under 3/4-ton and 1-ton trucks
Driveline work is where a two-post earns its keep. A 1-ton dually front driveshaft sits at roughly 22 inches of ground clearance loaded, which means a technician needs the lift to reach eye-level for a comfortable pull. Every certified column we install lifts to 74 inches at the pad, giving 6 feet 2 inches of working clearance. That is enough to unbolt a two-piece driveshaft, drop a transfer case, or pull a U-joint without a stepladder.
What catches shops off guard is not lift height — it is arm swing. When you drop a driveshaft, the arms have to hold the truck by the frame rails while the tech is under the transmission tunnel. Frame-rail lift points on a 1-ton sit close to the driveline itself, so the swing arm has to route around the tunnel. This is why we spec truck-adapter stack pads for automotive two post lifts in dealerships that see a lot of Super Duty, Ram HD, and GM 2500 work — you clear the tunnel by 3 inches instead of scraping it and the tech works standing up instead of hunched.
Column height, drive-through spread, and door clearance
Dealer bays run a 14-foot ceiling minimum, and column height for a standard-height two-post lands at 145 inches. That gives about 22 inches of overhead clearance to the concrete-anchor lock plate, which sounds like plenty until you factor in the roof of a lifted crew-cab or a work van. For dealerships running a high mix of vans, we recommend the extended-height column at 168 inches — but that means the ceiling has to be a true 14 feet 6 inches, no compromises. Measure to the bottom of the truss, not the drywall.
Drive-through spread — inside column to inside column — should be 100 inches minimum for a general dealership. Anything less and a Sprinter, a Transit, or a dually pickup starts brushing the columns on drive-in. Baseplate models bump the drive-through by another inch or two because there is no overhead beam pinching the top, and they open up ceiling installs for shops with lower ceilings. Recommended models for a dealership service floor
For a general-service dealership doing 30 to 60 ROs per bay per week, we spec two Rotary configurations most often. The Rotary SPO12 at 12,000 lb capacity is the workhorse for passenger-car and light-truck floors — asymmetric, clear-floor, ALI-certified, and priced where a dealer’s fixed-ops budget can absorb three or four of them in a build-out. For a truck-heavy floor with F-250 and above, we step up to a Rotary SPO16 at 16,000 lb. It looks like overkill until you actually lift a diesel dually with a tool box, and then it feels exactly right.

Every swing arm pivot needs grease every 90 days, every cable pulley needs oil monthly, and the safety-cam ring needs a light chain-lube spray quarterly.
