When we deliver automotive two post lifts to EV specialty shops in Marion, the biggest myth we bust is that the freight carrier will help unload the crate. They will not. A palletized two-post lift weighs anywhere from 1,400 to 2,200 pounds depending on capacity, and the driver’s job stops at the tailgate. The freight-day myth — your driver is not there to unload

Every third call we get from an EV shop starts with “the lift arrived and now what?” The freight carrier’s contract stops at the tailgate. Their driver is not a laborer, is not insured to operate your forklift, and is often on a tight route with the next stop forty miles away. We had a Marion shop owner last spring watch a semi pull out of his lot with the crate still on the trailer because he assumed the driver would help. The lift went back to the terminal for another 72 hours and a redelivery fee north of a hundred and eighty dollars. The myth here is that freight behaves like UPS. It does not. Freight is a curbside handoff, and you are the loading dock.

If you have a forklift on site, plan to have it staged, fueled, and operator-ready thirty minutes before the delivery window opens. If you do not own a forklift, rent one for a half day from a local yard — expect to spend between a hundred fifty and two hundred fifty dollars. A tilt-bed rollback tow truck is a backup option some shops use, but the crate has to slide, not tip, or the columns can bow inside the packaging. The one thing you cannot do is call the carrier back to reschedule at no charge. That is not a service class-85 freight offers on the day of delivery.

Forklift capacity versus actual crate weight

The most common mistake we see EV shops make when they source a rental forklift is undersizing it. A 6,000-pound truck sounds like plenty for a two-post crate that weighs two thousand pounds. It is not, because forklift capacity ratings drop dramatically as the load-center distance grows. A crate is not a pallet of cinderblocks stacked over the forks — it is a long, narrow box with the center of gravity two or three feet out from the mast. Once you factor in the load-center penalty, that 6,000-pound truck may only safely lift twenty-five hundred pounds. That is cutting it close on a heavier lift crate.

What we recommend to any shop in the Marion area planning delivery is renting an 8,000-pound truck at minimum, with pneumatic tires if you are unloading in a gravel driveway or an unpaved side lot. The extra rental cost is trivial compared to the alternative of dropping a crate. We also strongly recommend a spotter — one person driving, one person calling clearances. On a windy day the crate acts like a sail and you want a second set of eyes watching the mast, the tailgate clearance, and the ground crew standing well back from the load path. Overhead versus baseplate — where the EV myth costs you

A myth we hear constantly from newer EV shop owners is that a baseplate two-post is the safer choice because there is no overhead crossbar in the way. In reality, the overhead configuration is almost always the better pick for EV work, and here is why. Modern EVs are tall — the average crossover EV sits five or six inches higher off the tires than its ICE counterpart because of the battery pack. When you raise an EV on a two-post lift, the roof is closer to the ceiling than you think. The baseplate lift’s floor-mounted hydraulic hose then becomes a tripping hazard exactly where your techs are walking, and the safety cable that transmits the equalizer signal runs through the floor with it.

The overhead configuration puts that hardware overhead, out of the walk path, and adds a physical stop that prevents a tall vehicle from being raised into the ceiling. For an EV shop that stop is worth its weight in insurance premiums. The one legitimate reason to go baseplate is a genuinely low ceiling — under about eleven feet — where an overhead crossbar would prevent you from raising a truck at all. If your Marion bay has twelve feet or more of clear height, spec the overhead every time. That is our default recommendation for automotive two post lifts installed in dedicated EV bays. Alignment matters more on an EV than a gas car

Here is another myth worth killing: “EVs don’t need alignment as often.” They need it more often, not less, and that changes how you spec a two-post. Battery packs add six hundred to a thousand pounds of unsprung mass concentrated in the floor pan, which loads the suspension bushings harder and wears the toe-and-camber geometry faster than a gas equivalent. We routinely see EV alignment intervals half of what an ICE fleet would require. If your shop is planning to run alignment work through the same bay as the lift, you need a two-post that will accommodate on-lift alignment jigs and has enough arm reach to clear the wide track of an EV crossover or truck.

Practically, that means picking a lift with asymmetric arm geometry and at least a 130-inch minimum height under the carriage. Rotary’s SPOA10 and Challenger’s E10 both fit that profile. What we tell every EV shop building out its first bay is not to buy the cheapest ten-thousand-pound lift on the market — spend the extra fifteen hundred dollars for the model with the alignment-friendly arm set and the taller lifting height. That difference is why we spec heavier-duty automotive two post lifts for EV bays than for a general-repair shop. The extra money is paid back in one busy month of EV service.

Freight-damage inspection before you sign

The most expensive signature a shop owner ever puts on paper is the freight bill of lading before they inspect the crate. Once you sign clean, the carrier’s liability drops to a fraction of the lift’s replacement value, and any damage discovered later becomes your problem to fight over. We coach every Marion customer to do a two-minute walk-around before signing. Look for punctures in the shrink wrap. Look for column crating that has been crushed or gouged. Check the ends of the crate where forklift damage is most common. Photograph anything suspicious with a phone before the driver leaves. If the damage looks real, note it on the delivery receipt in writing — “possible concealed damage, columns not yet inspected” — and photograph the annotated slip.

Once the crate is off the trailer, break the shrink wrap and inspect the columns for cosmetic dings, bent baseplate flanges, and any signs the crate was dropped or tipped in transit. Hydraulic hoses in a factory two-post are coiled at the base of the columns and are surprisingly durable, but a hard drop can crack a manifold fitting that you will not see until first fluid-up. What “curb delivery” actually gets you in the Marion area

Freight terminology hides a lot of surprises. “Curb delivery” or “curbside delivery” means the driver puts the pallet on the ground at the nearest legal drop point to your address. That is often the end of your driveway, not inside your building. On rural Marion-area addresses where the property is set back off the highway, curb delivery might literally mean the county-road shoulder. If your bay is a hundred and fifty feet up a gravel driveway, plan to move the crate that distance yourself with a forklift or a chain and a skid steer.

There is an upgrade — usually called “inside delivery” or “liftgate residential” — that costs an extra hundred to two hundred fifty dollars and gets the crate onto a residential driveway with a liftgate lower. It does not get the crate inside your shop and it does not include unloading assistance. The upgrade worth paying for is what we quote as “notified appointment delivery” — the carrier calls you 24 hours ahead with a two-hour window instead of showing up cold. On our automotive two post lifts orders we always spec that appointment tier because a surprise delivery when the shop owner is not there is how crates end up in the wrong spot, on the wrong slope, or refused by the driver and sent back to the terminal.

Iowa-specific logistics we plan for on every EV install

Central Iowa freight has its own quirks. In winter, delivery windows on rural addresses collapse because carriers pull off routes when the county roads ice over. If you schedule an install in January or February for a shop outside Cedar Rapids, plan for a delivery window that could slip by three to five business days without notice. The carriers we use most for automotive two post lifts landing in Marion — R+L, Estes, XPO — will call ahead when weather is a factor, but only if you have flagged the address as rural or seasonal-access.

The other Iowa quirk is bridge weight limits on secondary roads. If your shop is on a route that crosses a posted township bridge, the semi that would normally handle the delivery may have to trans-load onto a smaller truck at a terminal in Cedar Rapids or Waterloo. That trans-load can add a day and sometimes a small fee, but it is far cheaper than the alternative of a semi trying to back up your driveway and getting stuck.
