A farm shop west of Waukee is a different animal than a dealership bay, and automotive two post lifts have to be chosen differently for it. The owner we worked with there had a 40×60 pole building, a grain cart parked in one corner, a welder in another, and a rotating cast of vehicles: a dually, two farm pickups, his wife’s crossover, a neighbor’s car every other weekend, and whatever piece of equipment needed a driveline pulled. He wasn’t running a business. He was running a shop that had to do everything. Most of his lift work was exhaust and driveline access — U-joints, carrier bearings, rusted-through pipe. That mix changes what you should buy. This is the checklist we walked him through, including the brand history most buyers never think to ask about.

Step One: Size for the Heaviest Thing You’ll Actually Lift
Farm shop buyers get capacity backwards more than anyone. They either underbuy because they’re thinking about the car, or wildly overbuy because they’re thinking about the tractor — which a two post will never lift anyway. Be honest about the vehicle list. A three-quarter-ton diesel pickup with a service body and a full fuel tank can push past 9,000 lb curb weight. Add a topper and tools and you’re closer to the ceiling of a 10,000 lb unit than you’d guess.
For a mixed farm fleet with a dually in the rotation, we usually recommend 12,000 lb or 15,000 lb. The extra capacity also buys you longer, taller columns and heavier arm assemblies, which matter for truck work. We had a caller a while back who asked about 14,000 lb specifically, and that’s a legitimate spec point on the commercial side. Meanwhile, if your heaviest vehicle honestly tops out around 6,000 lb — like one North Dakota buyer we quoted — a 9,000 lb unit is not a compromise, it’s the correct answer, and it saves you money and ceiling height. When comparing automotive two post lifts, write down your five heaviest vehicles with real weights from the door jamb sticker before you shop. Guessing is how people end up with a lift that groans.
Step Two: Symmetric or Asymmetric, and Why Exhaust Work Decides It
Symmetric lifts place the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms; the vehicle sits centered and the doors open into the columns. Asymmetric units rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, setting the vehicle back so the doors clear. For a shop where you’re constantly getting in and out of the cab, asymmetric wins.
But for exhaust and driveline access — the farm shop’s bread and butter — the calculus shifts. Symmetric arms put the pickup points more evenly under the frame and give you a cleaner, more open center section under the vehicle. When you’re wrestling a two-piece driveshaft or cutting out a rusted mid-pipe on a long-bed truck, you want nothing in your way from the transmission crossmember back to the axle. A lot of buyers land on a versymmetric design, which does both: the columns and arms are built so you can run it either way depending on the vehicle. On a farm, where the next thing on the lift might be a Corolla or a crew cab, that flexibility is worth the small premium. Also spec three-stage front arms and low-profile adapters. Nearly every buyer of automotive two post lifts we talk to underestimates how often they’ll need to get under something with four inches of ground clearance.
Step Three: Read the Brand History Before You Read the Spec Sheet
Here’s the part almost nobody checks. Lift brands change hands, get acquired, get discontinued and get rebadged constantly. A name on a column doesn’t tell you whether the company that engineered it still exists, or whether the current owner of the trademark stocks a single replacement part for your model year.
Rotary has been building lifts since the 1920s and is the reason the two post configuration looks the way it does; their inground and surface product lines have documented part numbers going back decades. Challenger has a long commercial track record and its parts catalogs are genuinely usable. On the lighter side, BendPak and Atlas have both been in the market long enough that a ten-year-old unit is still supportable. Then there’s the long list of import brands that appear on marketplaces under a name, sell hard for four years, and vanish. We’ve had customers bring us lifts whose manufacturer no longer answers a phone. Some of those units are mechanically fine; the problem is that a stretched cable or a failed lock latch turns into a fabrication project. If you’re evaluating automotive two post lifts, look up when the brand started, who owns it now, and whether an ALI certification is current. Step Four: Trace the Parts Pipeline Before You Buy
Brand history tells you if parts exist. The parts pipeline tells you how fast you can get them. Those are different questions, and the second one is the one that bites farm shops, because you’re usually forty minutes from anything and the truck you just put in the air is the truck you need Monday morning.
Ask the seller three specific things: what’s the lead time on an equalization cable set, on a lock latch assembly, and on a power unit for this exact model. If they can’t answer, that’s your answer. For Rotary and Challenger, we can usually pull those off our shelf in Ames and ship same day anywhere in Iowa or the surrounding states. For BendPak and Atlas, the pipeline is solid though sometimes a few days longer. For an unbranded import, we’ve watched customers wait two to three months. One shop we helped in central Iowa had a carriage slide block fail on an off-brand column and ended up sourcing a replacement from a machine shop because the importer had changed hands twice. Cables, latches, sheaves, arm pins, hydraulic hoses and cylinder seals are all consumables on a lift that gets used. Plan for them like you plan for filters. Step Five: Verify the Pole Barn Slab and Ceiling Honestly
Pole buildings are where install plans go sideways. The slab in a farm shop is often poured in sections, sometimes by different crews, sometimes years apart, and the thickness varies more than in a commercial building. Manufacturers typically want at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10,000 lb unit and more for heavier capacities, cured a minimum of 28 days, with adequate distance from any seam or edge.
Core the slab where the columns will land. It’s an hour of work and it’s the cheapest insurance in this whole project. Also check for in-floor heat — plenty of newer Iowa pole barns have PEX in the slab, and a rotary hammer through a heat loop is a very bad afternoon. On the ceiling side, measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. Trusses, purlins, a hanging heater, a light fixture, the garage door track and the opener rail all count. The Waukee shop had twelve-foot walls at the sidewall and plenty of height at center, which is common in pole construction, so we set the lift toward the middle of the span. Step Six: Plan the Bay Around How You Actually Work
Farm shops are storage buildings that happen to have a work area. Before you pick a spot, walk the building and be realistic about what’s permanently parked and what moves. You need a minimum of twelve feet of width for the lift bay, and you want more — fourteen or fifteen feet gives you room to swing a door, roll a transmission jack alongside, and stand up a driveshaft without hitting a column.
Think about drive-through. If your building has doors on both ends, positioning the lift so a long-bed truck can pull straight through is worth reorganizing around. Think about where the exhaust hangs when you cut it, where the sparks land from a cut-off wheel, and whether your welding table and your fuel jugs are anywhere near that. Run a dedicated 220V circuit sized for the power unit and put the disconnect where you can reach it. Run a proper half-inch air drop to the column for lock release rather than dragging a hose across the floor. And light it properly — overhead LEDs flanking the bay so you’re not working under a truck by headlamp. One more thing farm shop owners forget: a two post lift takes vertical space out of the building permanently. If you also store a boat or a camper in there, map that out first. We’ve had to relocate more than one set of columns because a camper no longer fit.
Step Seven: Install, Certify, and Build a Maintenance Habit
Self-installation is realistic for a capable farm shop owner with a helper, a rotary hammer, a torque wrench, a good level and a full weekend. Plenty of buyers do it. What we insist on either way is that the anchors get torqued to the manufacturer’s spec with a real torque wrench — not a breaker bar and a feeling — that both columns are plumb within spec, and that the equalization cables are tensioned equally so the carriages rise together. Cycle it empty, then with a light vehicle, then check anchor torque again after the first few weeks of use.
After that, build the habit. Daily: look at the cables and listen for the locks clicking on the way up. Monthly: grease the carriage slide blocks and inspect arm restraint gears. Annually: get a certified inspection, even on a private farm shop where nobody’s making you. A lift failure with a truck in the air is not a repair bill, it’s an injury.
