Differential and Driveline Work Sets the Capacity Floor
Pulling a differential is a weight game, and it’s not the weight of the truck that gets you — it’s the concentrated load and the height you need. On a medium-duty truck with a loaded body, gross weight can run well past what a light-duty lift is rated to hold, and the front-to-rear distribution is nothing like a car. We ask heavy-duty shops for the actual gross vehicle weight rating of their heaviest regular customer, plus whatever is typically in the bed, and then we add margin. A shop that says “mostly one-tons” but takes in a loaded flatbed dually once a month needs to spec for the flatbed.
In practice that pushes most heavy-duty truck shops out of the 10,000 lb tier and into 12,000, 15,000, or 18,000 lb capacities, and sometimes out of two-post entirely toward mobile columns for full trucks. We’ve had shops tell us they only need 14,000 and then discover mid-quote that they don’t actually know what capacity their existing units are rated for. That’s normal. Check the data plate on the column before you buy anything else. Sequence Step One: The Slab, Before Anything Else
If your building isn’t poured yet, you are in the best possible position and most people waste it. Tell your concrete contractor the anchor requirements for the specific model you’re buying before the forms go up. Heavy-capacity two-post units commonly want 6 inches or more of 3,000 to 4,000 PSI concrete in the column footprint, and getting that by thickening the pour in two 4×4 areas costs almost nothing while the truck is on site. Cutting and pouring footings after the fact costs real money and takes the bay out of service for a week.
While you’re at it, plan around what else goes in that slab. In-floor heat is common in shops around the Iowa Great Lakes region, and radiant tubing in the wrong spot means we either scan and dodge it or you lose your preferred lift position. Same with post-tension cable, floor drains, and trench drains — all of them constrain where columns can land. We’ve walked into finished buildings where the only structurally viable spot for the lift put the arms into a drain trench. On the Spirit Lake project we marked column locations on the contractor’s slab drawing, specified a thickened pad at each, and told him where to keep tubing out. That single sheet of paper prevented the most expensive mistake in the whole build.
Sequence Step Two: Ceiling, Doors, and Everything Hanging
Heavy-duty capacity means tall columns, and tall columns mean ceiling clearance most shops underestimate. A high-capacity overhead two-post plus a tall service truck at full rise can want 14 to 16 feet of clear height, and “clear” means below the lowest obstruction — not the underside of the trusses. Unit heaters, sprinkler mains, lighting, air reels, and door tracks all live in that zone. If you’re still in framing, raise the sidewall. It is dramatically cheaper now than never.
Door openings matter too. A 16-foot overhead door on a building with 14-foot sidewalls doesn’t leave much for a top beam, and if the door track runs where the beam belongs, you’re either relocating the lift, switching to a baseplate configuration, or moving the door. We had a customer who solved it by putting the lift in the second bay where the header was higher and dedicating bay one to drive-through work. Decisions like that are easy on paper and painful once studs are up. When we spec automotive two post lifts into new construction, ceiling and door layout is the second conversation we have, right after the slab, and it’s often the one that determines which model is even on the table.
Sequence Step Three: Power, Air, and Where the Panel Sits
Most single-phase two-post power units run on 208-230V and want a dedicated circuit in the 25 to 30 amp range. Heavier or three-phase units have their own requirements, and three-phase is worth asking about if your service supports it — smaller motor draw, often smoother operation. The mistake we see is the electrician roughing in the building before anyone knows which column carries the power unit, so the receptacle lands 30 feet from where it’s needed and someone runs an extension cord for the next four years.
Tell your electrician which side the power unit mounts on and how high, and have him stub conduit right there. While the walls are open, do the same for compressed air — the lock release on most two-post designs is air-actuated, and pulling a hose across the bay floor every day gets old fast. Coordinating power and air is a fifteen-minute phone call that saves hours. Cost Breakdown: Equipment Tiers
Equipment cost scales with capacity, column height, and brand tier, and the spread is wide. Entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb units from budget import brands sit at the bottom — we get plenty of leads with a target around four thousand dollars for a lift in that class, and that number is achievable if you’re doing passenger cars and light trucks and handling install yourself. Mid-tier 10,000 to 12,000 lb units from established commercial brands run meaningfully higher and buy you better lock design, better cable routing, thicker steel, and a parts pipeline that will still exist in fifteen years.
Heavy-duty capacities — 15,000 lb and up, tall columns, extended arms — are a different category again, often multiples of the entry tier. That’s the honest answer for a truck shop doing differential work: you’re not shopping the same market as the guy putting a lift in a pole barn. What you get for it is a unit that holds a loaded service truck at full rise all day without you thinking about it. We tell shops to weight the decision toward parts availability and service life rather than sticker price, because on commercial automotive two post lifts the labor cost of downtime in a working bay dwarfs the difference between tiers over a ten-year life. Used equipment can be a legitimate option too, but only after inspection — we’ve turned down plenty of used units with corroded columns or non-serviceable lock assemblies.

Professional install on a standard two-post is typically a low four-figure line item, and it rises with capacity, travel distance, and site complexity. That covers setting and plumbing columns, shimming, anchoring to spec torque, hydraulic hookup and bleeding, cable installation and tensioning, lock verification through the full travel range, a loaded cycle test, and operator walkthrough. Freight is separate and it’s not trivial — a heavy two-post ships on a truck and needs a way to get off it. If you don’t have a forklift or telehandler on site, tell us in advance so we bring equipment or arrange liftgate delivery.
Then come the items nobody budgets. Concrete cut-and-pour footings, if your slab tests thin. Electrical work for the dedicated circuit and disconnect. Air drop for the lock release. Removing and disposing of an old lift, if you’re replacing — that’s real labor and sometimes a hazardous fluid disposal fee. Permits and inspection in some jurisdictions. Optional accessories that quickly stop feeling optional: adapter sets for varied frame heights, truck adapters, drop-in extensions, a rolling jack if you’re doing wheel work. On the Great Lakes-region build the customer’s all-in number ran roughly a third above the equipment price once install, electrical, and adapters were counted. That’s a normal ratio, and knowing it up front is better than discovering it in stages.
Putting the Sequence Together
The order that works: pick your capacity from your heaviest real vehicle, get the anchor and clearance spec for that specific model, hand it to your concrete contractor and framer before either one starts, coordinate power and air while walls are open, then take delivery and install into a building that was designed for the equipment instead of tolerating it. That sequence costs almost nothing to follow and saves thousands. Reversed — buy first, measure later — it’s how bays end up with lifts in the wrong spot or nowhere to put one at all.
