An independent shop owner up in the Iowa Great Lakes region runs two bays with automotive two post lifts that could not be more different: bay one is a baseplate overhead unit from the late nineties that came with the building, and bay two is a clearfloor asymmetric he bought new about six years ago. Same shop, same tech, same mix of daily-driver oil changes, brakes, exhaust, and suspension work. He has strong opinions about both, and after a spring where we rebuilt a cylinder on one and re-cabled the other, so do we. This is the side-by-side comparison — including the seal and rebuild-kit question that determines whether an older lift is worth keeping.

Bay One: The Overhead Baseplate Veteran

The overhead unit has a floor plate connecting the columns, hydraulic and equalization lines routed through that plate, and a crossbar up top carrying the cables and the shutoff bar. It was installed on a four-inch slab in 1998 and it is still working. That tells you something about how durable this design is — the baseplate spreads load and does not demand the thick anchor pads a clearfloor column needs, which is exactly why we still recommend the layout for older buildings with thin or questionable concrete. A shop in Grand Forks called us about the same problem last year: 6,000 lb vehicles, no ability to run an overhead, thin slab, and a hard budget ceiling. Baseplate solved it.

The complaints are real, though. That floor plate is a trip hazard, a transmission jack has to roll over it, and it collects grease and brake dust in a way that is genuinely annoying to clean. The crossbar overhead limits truck height — his 8-foot box vans clear, his lifted crew cabs with a light bar do not. And the shutoff bar has been bent twice by somebody in a hurry. When people ask us to compare automotive two post lifts by configuration, this is the honest trade: baseplate buys you unlimited vehicle height and forgiving concrete requirements, and costs you a clean floor and an unobstructed drive-through.

Bay Two: The Clearfloor Asymmetric

Bay two is a 10,000 lb clearfloor asymmetric with the columns rotated about 30 degrees and a shorter front arm. Nothing crosses the floor. He can roll a transmission jack, an oil drain, and a tire cart anywhere under the vehicle, and he can sweep the bay in a minute. For a shop doing high-volume daily maintenance — oil, filters, rotations, brake jobs, exhaust — that clean floor is worth more per day than the spec sheet suggests. The asymmetric geometry also means the doors open on cars, which sounds minor until you have watched a tech contort out of a sedan forty times in a week.

What it cost him: eight-inch anchor pads had to be cut and poured, adding real money and three weeks to the project. And the overhead beam sets a hard ceiling. His building gives about 12 feet 4 inches, so anything over roughly 79 inches tall at the roof does not go in that bay without hitting the shutoff bar. The two-bay split ended up being accidental genius — trucks and vans go in bay one, cars and crossovers in bay two. If you are only buying one lift, that is the decision to sweat. We tell people to inventory what actually rolls through the door for a month before choosing between these two styles of automotive two post lifts, because the vehicle mix decides it, not preference.

Capacity, Arms, and What Actually Gets Used

Both units are rated well above what this shop lifts. His heaviest regular vehicle is a three-quarter-ton pickup around 7,500 lb, and the 10,000 lb rating covers that with margin. We still push shops toward more capacity than the math requires, and not for safety theater. Higher-capacity models come with taller columns, heavier carriages, larger-diameter cylinders, and better arm hardware. Those differences show up in year twelve as slop, not failure — and slop is what makes an old lift feel scary even when it is structurally fine.

Arms matter more than capacity in daily practice. Bay two has three-stage front arms, which reach the tucked pickup points on modern unibody crossovers where a two-stage arm simply will not extend far enough without a stack of adapters. Bay one is two-stage all around, so low sports cars are a real problem there — he keeps a set of rubber blocks and a low-profile adapter set on a cart just for that bay. If you are speccing new equipment, the adapter and arm package deserves as much attention as the capacity number. We have shipped plenty of automotive two post lifts where the customer’s real complaint six months later was not the lift at all — it was that they never bought the adapters their vehicle mix required, and the tech was improvising with 2x4s. Do not improvise pickup points. Buy the correct stack pads and frame cradles up front.

The Cylinder That Started Weeping

Last spring the overhead unit in bay one developed a slow drift — park a car at working height, come back from lunch, and it had settled an inch onto the locks. Then the owner noticed a film of oil on the column below the cylinder and a reservoir that needed topping every few weeks. Classic rod seal failure. The rod itself was clean and unpitted, which is the deciding factor, so we quoted a seal kit instead of a new cylinder.

A rebuild on a single-stage lift cylinder is not exotic work, but it is unforgiving of shortcuts. The lift comes down and gets blocked mechanically — never trust hydraulics to hold anything while you are working on hydraulics. Pressure gets relieved, the line is cracked and drained into a pan, and the cylinder comes out. Then the packing nut or gland comes off, the rod and piston come out, and you replace the rod seal, the wiper, the piston seal, the O-rings, and the backup rings as a complete set. Every one of them, not just the leaker. We hone or at minimum polish the bore, inspect the rod for scoring with a fingernail, and reassemble with clean ISO 32 oil and a torque spec, not a guess. Then bleed thoroughly and cycle empty a dozen times before any vehicle goes on. Done properly, a rebuilt cylinder on well-maintained automotive two post lifts is good for another decade.

When a Rebuild Kit Is the Wrong Answer

We are not universally in favor of rebuilding. Three findings send us the other direction. If the rod is pitted, scored, or has rust bloom under the seal area, new seals will chew themselves up in months — the rod is the sealing surface and you cannot fix it with a kit. If the bore is gouged or corroded, same story. And if the cylinder is a rolled-thread or crimped design with no serviceable gland, there is nothing to open without destroying it, and replacement is the only path.

The orphan-brand problem is the other consideration. Plenty of the older two-post equipment in Iowa shops came from manufacturers that no longer exist, and there is no factory kit. We can often cross-reference by measuring rod diameter, bore, seal groove depth, and gland thread and building a kit from standard seal stock — we do it regularly and it works. But it takes measurements and time, and if the lift also needs cables, a power unit, and lock rebuilds, you have to be honest about whether you are restoring a machine or slowly buying a worse version of a new one. Our rule of thumb: if total repair cost approaches 40 percent of a comparable new unit and the structure is over 25 years old, replace. Below that, with a sound rod and bore, rebuild. Maintenance the Great Lakes Shop Actually Does

Northwest Iowa shops fight a specific enemy: road salt tracked in on vehicles from November through April, dripping onto columns, cables, and anchor bases. This owner does something simple and smart — he hoses and squeegees both bays monthly in winter and wipes the columns and cable sheaves down with a rag and light oil. That single habit is why his 1998 lift still has serviceable cables and his anchors still hold torque, while we see fifteen-year-old equipment in similar buildings with rust-jacked base plates and cables that are shedding wire.

His written routine: daily visual on cables, arm restraints, and the floor around the anchors; weekly lube on arm pivots and lock pawls; monthly hydraulic level check and a full-height empty cycle listening for lock timing; annual professional inspection with anchor torque verification and cable measurement. He also logs it in a notebook by the parts washer, which matters if an insurance adjuster ever asks. None of that is complicated and none of it is expensive, and it is the entire difference between equipment that lasts thirty years and equipment that gets condemned at fifteen.
