Choosing between two configurations of automotive two post lifts is the single most common decision we walk independent shop owners through, and it almost never comes down to price alone. We had a two-bay shop outside Sioux City call us last spring because their oil-change bay was bottlenecking the whole operation — one drive-on ramp setup, a technician on his knees with a drain pan, and a line of customers out front. They wanted a symmetric clearfloor unit. What they actually needed, once we measured the ceiling and the door header, was something different. That conversation is worth writing down in full, because the same specs come up in Cherokee, Le Mars, Storm Lake, and every small town in between where a shop is trying to get faster without moving buildings.

The Two Configurations We Put Side by Side
Configuration A was a 10,000 lb symmetric clearfloor overhead unit with three-stage front arms and two-stage rears. Configuration B was a 12,000 lb asymmetric baseplate unit with a floorplate crossing the drive-through and symmetrical three-stage arms all around. On paper, most shop owners look at the capacity number and stop there. That’s the wrong first filter. The first filter is always ceiling height, and the second is what you actually roll into the bay every day.
The Sioux City shop had 11 feet 4 inches of clear ceiling at the lowest point — a sprinkler main ran across the back third of the bay. A clearfloor overhead unit with a standard overhead beam and shutoff bar needs roughly 12 feet to give full rise on most 10K models, and less than that means you’re either buying a low-ceiling adapter kit or accepting that tall vehicles will trip the shutoff early. Baseplate models solve the ceiling problem by routing the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a plate on the floor instead of an overhead beam. The tradeoff is that you drive over that plate every single time. For a shop doing oil changes and fluid service on passenger cars and half-tons, that plate is a minor annoyance. For a shop rolling transmission jacks and heavy toolboxes across the bay all day, it wears on you.
Capacity: Why 10,000 lb Is Usually Enough and 12,000 lb Is Usually Smarter
We get a lot of calls that sound like one we took from a rural customer who told us straight out that his heaviest vehicle was 6,000 pounds and he didn’t want to overspend. Fair. A 9,000 or 10,000 lb unit handles every passenger car, every crossover, every half-ton pickup, and most three-quarter-tons that aren’t loaded. If your bay only ever sees that, you are not undersized. Anyone telling you a 6,000 lb daily driver needs a 15,000 lb column is selling, not advising.
That said, we push a lot of independent shops toward 12,000 lb for a reason that has nothing to do with the weight rating. The heavier-capacity units in most manufacturer lines get thicker columns, wider carriages, longer arms, and higher lifting heights as a package. A Rotary SPOA10 and an SPOA12 aren’t just different numbers on a plate — the 12 gives you more arm reach for a long-wheelbase crew cab and more clearance under the front crossmember. When a customer rolls in with a diesel dually and a leaking rear diff, the extra capacity is the least useful thing about the bigger unit. The reach is what saves you. Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Arms for Fluid Service Work
This is where oil changes and fluid service change the math. Symmetric units place the columns directly across from each other and center the vehicle between them, which means the doors open into the column. That’s fine for a body shop doing panel work with the doors closed, and it’s genuinely annoying for a lube tech who’s in and out of the cabin resetting a maintenance light six times a day.
Asymmetric units rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, which pushes the vehicle’s center of mass back and lets the driver’s door swing clear. For a shop whose bread and butter is oil, transmission, transfer case, and differential service, asymmetric wins on ergonomics alone. The Sioux City shop’s techs were averaging eleven minutes per car on the drive-on ramp. On the asymmetric unit we put in, with the vehicle at chest height and a drain pan under a full-open pan bolt, they cut that to under seven. Multiply seven saved minutes by thirty cars a week and the equipment paid for a chunk of itself before winter. Concrete: The Spec Nobody Wants to Talk About
We had a customer in northern Missouri tell us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less.” That “maybe less” is the whole ballgame. Every manufacturer publishes a minimum: typically 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for a 10K unit and 4.25 to 6 inches for higher capacities, measured as unbroken slab with no expansion joint or saw cut inside the anchor pattern. Post-tension slabs and slabs with in-floor heat are their own conversation and we handle those differently.
Here’s what actually happens in older Iowa shop buildings: the slab is thick enough in the middle and thin at the perimeter, or there’s a 1970s trench drain running exactly where column two wants to go. We core-test before we anchor. It costs an hour and it has saved multiple customers from a column that walks under load. If the slab doesn’t make spec, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad — typically 4 by 4 feet, 12 inches deep, tied to the existing slab with rebar dowels. Budget a few hundred to a couple thousand per column depending on access and finish. We’d rather tell you that up front than after your automotive two post lifts are sitting on a pallet in your parking lot. Model Numbers Worth Knowing Before You Call
Shop owners often call us with a model number they saw on a forum, which is genuinely helpful even when the model isn’t right for them. It tells us what they’ve been looking at. On the commercial side we stock and install Rotary and Challenger. The Rotary SPO and SPOA families cover 10K through 12K clearfloor and overhead, the Challenger CL10 and E10 series cover similar ground with a slightly different arm setup, and both brands have parts availability in the Midwest that off-brand imports simply do not match.
On the home and light-duty side, BendPak and Atlas both build solid units in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb range at a lower entry price. A model like the Atlas 9BP or a BendPak XPR-10 will do honest work in a two-bay independent shop. What you give up is column steel gauge, cable service life, and the depth of the local parts bench. When a Rotary carriage slider wears out in year eight, we have it. When a discontinued import model’s equalizer sheave fails, sometimes nobody has it. What the Spec Sheet Won’t Tell You About Install
Two units with identical published specs can install very differently. Overhead clearfloor models need a clean run for the crossbeam and a mounting height that clears your garage door track when it’s fully open — we’ve measured plenty of Iowa shops where the door in the open position sits exactly where the shutoff bar wants to live. Baseplate models need a floor route for the hose and cables that doesn’t cross a drain or a joint, and they need the plate to sit flat, which means grinding high spots on an old slab.
Power is the other quiet variable. Most single-phase power units in this class want a dedicated 220V 30-amp circuit. Three-phase is available and runs cooler and quieter, but only if you already have three-phase service, and running new three-phase to a small shop is rarely worth it just for one lift. We ask about the panel before we ask about anything else, because a customer who buys a unit and then finds out the electrician quote is four figures ends up unhappy with us even though we didn’t wire the building. Full commercial install on a standard two-post typically runs in the low four figures including anchors, shimming, fluid, and startup. Shipping to a residential or non-dock address adds a liftgate charge.
How We’d Spec It If It Were Our Shop
If we were opening a two-bay independent in Sioux City today doing volume oil changes, fluid service, brakes, and general repair, we’d put a 12,000 lb asymmetric clearfloor unit in the primary bay if the ceiling allows and a 10,000 lb baseplate in the second bay if it doesn’t. That combination covers everything that rolls through the door, keeps the high-traffic bay free of a floorplate, and gives the tech door clearance where it matters most. We’d spec three-stage front arms in both bays and add screw-pad adapters and truck adapters day one, because chasing adapters six months later always costs more than buying them with the unit.
That’s the recommendation, not the rule. The right answer depends on your slab, your ceiling, your door, your panel, and what actually parks in your bays.
