Most of the calls we take about automotive two post lifts start the same way: somebody has been working on the ground long enough that their knees are telling them to stop. Last spring a mobile mechanic outside Waterloo called us after he’d spent a winter doing CV axle and half-shaft jobs on gravel driveways with a floor jack and a pair of stands. He had just leased a two-bay building, he had a budget, and he had one question that nobody had answered straight for him: symmetric or asymmetric arms? That single decision changes how you load the vehicle, where the door hits, and how much room you actually have to swing a half-shaft out. Here’s how that install went.

What the Waterloo Bay Actually Looked Like

The building was an older block structure, two bays, roughly 24 feet deep with a 10-foot overhead door on each side. Ceiling height at the truss was a hair over 12 feet, which is workable but not generous. The slab was original, and that’s the first thing we test on every job — we cored a sample and found about five inches of concrete over compacted fill, with no visible rebar. Five inches is the bare minimum most manufacturers will certify for a 10,000 lb column, and “about five inches” in an old Iowa shop usually means four and three-quarters in the spot where you want your anchor.

That single finding shaped the whole quote. We recommended cutting two footing pads — three feet square, twelve inches deep, tied into the existing slab with dowels — before anything got anchored. It added a weekend and a modest line item, but it turned a marginal floor into one that will hold anchor torque for twenty years. We see failed anchors more often than failed lifts, and almost every failure traces back to somebody skipping this step. If you are shopping automotive two post lifts and nobody has asked you about your concrete thickness, cure date, or what’s under the slab, you’re talking to a box-shipper, not an installer.

Why CV Axle Work Pushed Him Toward Asymmetric

Half-shaft and CV axle replacement is a door-open job. You’re in and out of the driver’s seat to release the parking brake, you’re reaching in to steer the knuckle, and on a lot of front-drive cars you need the wheel turned lock to lock to pull the outer joint clear. On a symmetric lift, the vehicle sits centered between the columns, which means the door swing hits the column on nearly every mid-size sedan. You end up opening the door six inches and squeezing.

Asymmetric columns are rotated — typically 30 degrees — and the arms are staggered so roughly 30 percent of the vehicle sits ahead of the columns and 70 percent behind. That shifts the driver’s door forward of the post, and suddenly you can open it most of the way. For a guy whose bread and butter is front-end drivetrain work on passenger cars, that’s not a nicety. It’s twenty saved minutes a day. This is the single most common reason we steer car-and-light-truck shops toward asymmetric automotive two post lifts instead of the symmetric layout their buddy has.

The trade-off is loading discipline. Asymmetric lifts want the vehicle spotted with the front wheels well past the posts, and the arms are not interchangeable front to rear. A tech who learned on symmetric equipment will center the car out of habit the first few times. We spend fifteen minutes on spotting during every handover for exactly that reason.

When Symmetric Is Still the Right Answer

We do not sell asymmetric to everybody, and it bothers us when a salesman does. Symmetric layouts still win in a few real situations. If you work on long-wheelbase pickups, dual-rear-wheel trucks, or full-size vans, the balanced load distribution of a symmetric lift is genuinely better — the weight sits where the engineers put the load path, and you’re not fighting a truck bed hanging way out behind the rear arms.

Symmetric also wins for anybody doing a lot of heavy under-body work where you want the vehicle as far from the posts as possible: exhaust fabrication, frame repair, transmission drops with a jack that needs room to maneuver. And if your bay is unusually narrow, a symmetric column set can sometimes fit where the rotated asymmetric columns will not, because the footprint geometry differs.

There is a third path worth knowing about. Several Rotary and Challenger models are versymmetric — the arms and columns let you configure either way, so you spot a truck symmetrically in the morning and a Civic asymmetrically in the afternoon. It costs a little more up front than a single-purpose unit. For a general repair shop with a genuinely mixed vehicle mix, it’s usually the smartest money in the whole category of automotive two post lifts, and it’s what we put in most independent shops in the Cedar Valley now. Capacity: Why 10,000 lb Was Enough

He asked about 12,000 and 14,000 lb units, because bigger sounds safer. We talked him out of it. His heaviest regular vehicle was a three-quarter-ton pickup at roughly 7,000 lb curb weight, and his stated plan was passenger cars, crossovers, and the occasional light truck. A 10,000 lb clearfloor unit carries that with a wide margin.

Capacity is not the only number that matters, though — arm reach and pad height matter more for the work he does. Low-profile arms with a pad that drops under three and a half inches let him get under lowered cars and low-clearance EVs without ramping them. A taller pad stack means somebody’s frame rail gets scraped. Rise height was the other spec we checked against that 12-foot truss: a clearfloor overhead-bar unit needs roughly 12 feet of clear height to fully open, and at his ceiling we had to confirm the crossbar cleared the truss with the carriage topped out. It did, with inches to spare, but on a lot of Iowa pole buildings it doesn’t — and that’s when a baseplate model becomes the answer, running the equalizer cable and hoses through a floor channel instead of overhead. The Install, Start to Finish

Footings first. We cut, dug, poured, and let it cure a full seven days — cure time is not negotiable and anybody who anchors into green concrete is gambling with your building and somebody’s spine. While that cured, the lift shipped and sat crated in the second bay.

Install day ran about six hours for two of us. Set columns, plumb and shim, drill anchors, torque to spec with a calibrated wrench and write the numbers down. Route the overhead crossbar, run the equalizer cables and hydraulic hose, mount and wire the power unit, bleed the system, then cycle the lift empty a dozen times. We check that both carriages arrive at the same height within a quarter inch, that every lock engages audibly at each notch, and that the single-point safety release drops both sides together. Then we load a vehicle and run it again.

Handover is the part shops undervalue. We walk the owner through arm spotting for asymmetric loading, monthly cable tension checks, the anchor re-torque schedule, and what a frayed cable looks like before it becomes a problem. We leave the manual, the anchor torque log, and our number. Every set of automotive two post lifts we install in Iowa gets that same treatment — we would rather spend an extra hour teaching than get a panicked call in eighteen months.

What It Cost, Roughly

We don’t publish exact prices because freight, capacity, and floor condition swing the number too much. But here are honest tiers for a job like the Waterloo one. A quality 10,000 lb asymmetric or versymmetric clearfloor unit from Rotary or Challenger sits in the mid four figures to low five figures depending on model and options. Freight into eastern Iowa adds a few hundred. Professional install typically lands in the high hundreds to low four figures for a straightforward anchor-and-go job.

Concrete work is the wild card. Two footing pads on an existing slab added roughly what the install itself cost. An electrical drop for a 220V single-phase power unit, if you don’t already have one within reach, is another few hundred from a licensed electrician. All in, he was into it for a number that paid itself back inside a year on labor hours alone — and that math is why most of the mobile guys who call us end up buying. If you want the cheapest thing on the internet, you can find automotive two post lifts advertised for a fraction of that. What you won’t find is a parts pipeline, an ALI certification, or anybody to call when a cable stretches.

Getting Parts and Service Later

The reason we push name brands hard is not loyalty — it’s the five-year-out conversation. Cables stretch. Lock pawls wear. Hydraulic cylinders weep at the rod seal. Sheaves seize. Those are normal service items on any lift, and the question is whether you can get the right part in a week or whether you’re measuring an obsolete cable with a tape and hoping.
