A tire-and-alignment shop owner in eastern Nebraska called us this spring because his crew was starting to take on more engine and drivetrain jobs – specifically oil pan gasket work on late-model Fords and GMs where the pan is trapped behind the front subframe. He had two four-post drive-on lifts already, and neither one gave his tech the wheels-free access needed to drop a pan cleanly. He wanted to add automotive two post lifts to the shop, but he wanted to do it the right way. That meant a real site survey, honest talk about what could go wrong, and a build that put safety ahead of speed at every step.

Why Oil Pan Work Belongs on a Two-Post, Not a Four-Post

Oil pan gasket work looks like a simple job until you actually get under a modern truck or SUV and see how the pan is packaged. On a lot of newer platforms, the oil pan is wedged between the front subframe crossmember and the transmission bell housing, and dropping it requires either pulling the subframe partially loose or lifting the engine slightly off its mounts to gain clearance. Doing that on a four-post drive-on lift is a bad idea. You cannot get to the subframe bolts easily because the wheels are still loaded, and any engine jack you set up is fighting the fact that the vehicle weight is resting on the tires above.

Automotive two post lifts change that entirely. With the vehicle picked up under the pinch welds or frame cups, the wheels hang free, the subframe is accessible from every side, and an engine support bar can sit across the strut towers with a straight shot down to the block. The tech can drop the subframe two inches, get the pan free, and clean the mating surfaces without ever being under a load that was fighting him. Every one of those small differences reduces the risk of a dropped pan, a torn gasket, or a hurt hand.

The Site Survey We Ran in Eastern Nebraska

The shop had a 60×80 building with a 14-foot ceiling and a poured 6-inch slab that had been installed in 2012. That is basically ideal concrete for automotive two post lifts. What was not ideal was the layout. The two existing four-post lifts sat in the middle of the bay running north-to-south, and the owner wanted a two-post in the same bay for engine and transmission work. That put us within about ten feet of the existing four-post columns on either side.

We walked the entire bay with him and measured every clearance we could think of. The critical numbers were the swing radius of the two-post arms (they can hit a car parked on the neighboring four-post if the arms are extended and the neighboring vehicle is a wide-body pickup), the ceiling height available for the overhead beam (14 feet was plenty), and the distance from the proposed lift to the shop air panel and 220V subpanel. The final position moved the two-post about four feet east of his original plan so the arms would always swing clear of the adjacent lift.

Installation Prep: What the Shop Did Before We Arrived

Two weeks before install day, we sent the shop a prep checklist. It included: clearing a 15×25 foot workspace centered on the install location, verifying the 220V circuit was landed and tested on a dedicated breaker, having 90 PSI shop air available within ten feet of the pump column, and marking the intended anchor bolt locations with masking tape so the installer could confirm placement against the drawings before drilling. Every one of those steps saves install-day time and reduces the chance of a re-do.

The shop also did something smart on their own: they had their electrician run the 220V circuit and the air line inside conduit that came up through the slab exactly at the column base. That kept the wiring off the ceiling, out of the way of the overhead beam, and safely tucked against the column. That kind of prep is not required, but it makes automotive two post lifts look and work like they were designed for that bay from day one. It also makes future service – like replacing a pump motor or a solenoid – measurably easier.

The First Oil Pan Job on the New Lift

Their first real oil pan job on the new lift was a 2016 F-150 5.0L that had been leaking from the front pan gasket. On their old setup they had budgeted six hours because the subframe had to come loose. On the two-post it took the tech about three hours and forty minutes start to finish. He picked the truck up on the frame cups, put an engine support bar across the strut towers, dropped the subframe about two inches, and had the pan free without any of the wrestling that job used to involve.

The safety win was quieter but more important. Because he could stand under the truck with a straight-up line of sight to every fastener, he torqued each bolt with a proper torque wrench instead of a stubby ratchet by feel. He also did a full undercarriage inspection while he was under there, caught a torn CV boot the customer had not noticed, and added it to the ticket. The customer approved. Automotive two post lifts pay for themselves partly through faster labor and partly through the additional work they let a good tech actually see and quote.

ALI Certification and Why It Matters Here

We only recommend ALI Gold-certified lifts for commercial shops, and that is not corporate box-checking. ALI certification means the lift has been third-party tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards for structural load, arm restraint, safety lock engagement, and lowering speed under load. For a shop where oil pan work has the vehicle in the air with weight coming off engine mounts and subframe brackets, those certifications matter because they are the difference between a lift that is designed for that duty cycle and one that is optimized for a spec sheet.

On top of the ALI rating, we spec every commercial install with a physical safety-lock check protocol – the tech pulls the lock release, lets the lift settle onto the locks, and audibly confirms each column has locked at the target height. That thirty-second check is the single most important thing a shop owner can enforce as a daily habit. It has to happen every time, on every lift, on every cycle, no exceptions. We put a laminated placard on the pump column of every install as a reminder.

Common Mistakes We See on Oil Pan Jobs

The three most common oil pan mistakes we see on automotive two post lifts are all avoidable. First, lifting at the wrong point – especially on aluminum-block engines where the pan itself is structural. Techs sometimes try to pick a truck up on the pan lip because it is a convenient flat surface. That warps the pan and ruins the gasket you were about to replace. Always lift on manufacturer-designated points: pinch welds, frame cups, or dedicated jacking pads.

Second, not using an engine support bar when the pan removal requires subframe drop or engine mount separation. The engine is not going to fall out – but the amount of torque it takes to break loose stubborn mount bolts, and the amount of wiggle you get when the subframe comes loose, is easily enough to shift the engine and pinch fingers. Third, working under a lift that has not been settled onto its mechanical safety locks. Hydraulics can leak. Locks cannot. Set the lift, lower onto the locks, verify audibly, then go under. Every time.

Where to Start If You Want to Add This Capability

If your shop is thinking about adding automotive two post lifts specifically to expand into oil pan, transmission, or subframe-adjacent work, start with three phone calls. Call an ALI-certified installer for a site survey. Call your electrician to confirm 220V single-phase or three-phase availability and cost to run to the intended location. And call your commercial insurance carrier – some carriers require documentation of ALI certification for coverage on repair work, and having that paperwork lined up before the lift arrives saves a headache later.
