A farm shop owner west of Davenport called us in the middle of harvest wanting one of the automotive two post lifts he’d been eyeing online, and he had everything figured out except the one thing that stops installs cold: power. He had a 30×50 machine shed, a good slab, plenty of ceiling, and a pile of pickups and a work van that needed oil changes and fluid service on a schedule nobody was keeping because crawling under a truck on gravel-dusted concrete is miserable. What he had for electrical was a 100-amp subpanel already loaded with a welder, an air compressor and a grain dryer circuit. That’s the conversation this article is about — the pre-purchase checklist we run on voltage, phase and circuit capacity before anybody clicks buy.

Step One: Find Out What Voltage and Phase You Actually Have

Farm shops in eastern Iowa are all over the map electrically. Some have single-phase 240V off a residential-style service. Some have true three-phase from a rural co-op because a grain leg or an irrigation pump justified it. Some have a rotary phase converter feeding a couple of old machine tools. And a surprising number of owners genuinely don’t know which they have, because the guy who wired the shed did it in 1988 and never labeled anything.

Pull the panel cover and look. Single-phase 240V will have two hot legs; three-phase will have three, and a meter across any two legs should read close to the same voltage. Take a photo of the panel label, the main breaker rating, and the meter base outside. That’s the first thing we ask for, because power unit motors on two-post lifts are ordered by voltage and phase and they are not interchangeable after the fact. A three-phase motor will not run on single-phase power, period, and swapping a power unit after delivery means freight both directions plus a restocking hit. We’ve had customers order online, get the crate, and discover the motor tag says 208-230/460 three-phase when their shed is single-phase 240. That’s an avoidable mistake and it’s why we put this at the top of the list.

Step Two: Size the Dedicated Circuit and the Breaker

Most single-phase power units on 10,000 to 12,000 lb automotive two post lifts run a 2 to 3 HP motor and want a dedicated 220-240V circuit protected at 30 amps, though some smaller units are fine on 20. Three-phase units at 208-230V typically want a 20-amp three-pole breaker; at 460V the draw drops enough that 15 amps often covers it. The word that matters in all of that is dedicated. The motor pulls hard on startup, and if it shares a circuit with a compressor that kicks on at the same moment, you’ll trip breakers and eventually cook contactors.

The Davenport-area shop we worked with had exactly that problem waiting for him. His subpanel had two open slots but not enough headroom once you added the lift’s load to a welder and a compressor that both cycled unpredictably. His electrician’s answer was a service upgrade at the shed — a larger subpanel fed from the yard pole — which added real cost to the project but also solved three other complaints he’d had for years. That’s usually how it goes. Getting the circuit right for a lift often exposes a shed that was underpowered from the start. Better to find it during planning than on install day with our crew standing around and a crate half-unpacked in the doorway.

Step Three: Measure the Wire Run and Account for Voltage Drop

Machine sheds are big, and panels are rarely near the lift. On a 240V single-phase circuit, a long run of undersized wire drops voltage, and a motor running on low voltage draws more current, runs hot and dies early. We’ve replaced power units that failed at three years old for no reason other than a 120-foot run of 12-gauge feeding a 30-amp circuit.

Rule of thumb your electrician will apply: keep voltage drop under three percent on a branch circuit. In practice that often means stepping up a wire size or two on runs past 75 or 100 feet. Copper is not cheap, so measure the run before you budget. Also decide now where the power unit column goes, because that determines where the disconnect lands and how much conduit you’re buying. On automotive two post lifts the power unit mounts to one column, and while you can spec which side, changing your mind after the conduit is stubbed up means redoing work. We walk the shop with a tape measure and mark the column locations on the floor with chalk before anyone orders wire. Ten minutes of layout saves a lot of aggravation, and it forces the conversation about door swing, workbench clearance and where the air line drops — all of which tend to conflict with a lift column if nobody looks first.

Step Four: Confirm the Slab Before You Confirm the Power

Electrical is the checklist item people forget, but concrete is the one that kills deals. Most 10,000 lb two-post lifts require at least 4 to 4.25 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, cured, with proper distance from expansion joints and slab edges. Farm shop slabs are often thicker than you’d expect in the drive lane and thinner near the walls, and plenty were poured over questionable base with no rebar.

Get a core sample or at minimum drill a test hole and measure. If the slab comes up short, the fix is cutting out a section under each column and pouring an engineered footing — a mid-four-figure add in most of eastern Iowa once you count saw work, disposal and cure time. Also check for radiant floor heat lines. If the shed has PEX in the slab, you need the as-built drawing or an infrared scan before anybody drills anchor holes, because putting a rotary hammer through a heat loop turns a lift install into a floor demolition project. Step Five: Match the Configuration to Oil Changes and Fluid Service

If the primary job is oil changes, transmission and differential service, and brake work on pickups and vans, a 10,000 lb asymmetric or symmetric clearfloor unit is almost always the right answer. Symmetric handles long-wheelbase trucks better and centers the load. Asymmetric buys you door clearance if cars are in the mix. Either way, order low-profile arm adapters up front — the farm shop we outfitted had a lowered half-ton the owner’s son drove, and standard adapters wouldn’t slide under the pinch welds.

Ceiling height decides overhead versus baseplate. Overhead is cleaner underfoot and what we prefer, but it needs roughly 12 feet of clear height for a standard commercial unit, and machine shed trusses eat into that. Baseplate models put the crossover bar at floor level and work under a lower ceiling at the cost of a small trip hazard and a plate you’ll roll a drain pan over. One customer we quoted was hard-capped at 139 inches and baseplate was the only option. For fluid service specifically, think about where your drain pans and waste oil setup live relative to the columns, and whether you want the power unit on the side you’ll be walking past with a full pan.

Step Six: The Pre-Purchase Checklist for Automotive Two Post Lifts, All in One Place

Here’s what we want in hand before quoting automotive two post lifts for a farm shop: panel voltage and phase confirmed with a meter, main breaker size, available breaker slots, distance from panel to the intended power-unit column, ceiling clear height at the lowest obstruction, slab thickness verified by core or test drill, presence of in-floor heat, door width and approach, and the heaviest vehicle you’ll actually put in the air with a real weight not a guess.

Add to that your working width — measure wall to wall and subtract benches, because column spread on a 10,000 lb unit plus arm swing plus room to open a truck door needs more than people assume. We tell customers 18 feet of usable width is comfortable and 15 is tight. Then think about drainage and floor slope; a slab that pitches hard toward a drain complicates shimming the columns to plumb. None of this is complicated, but skipping any one line turns a one-day install into three trips. What Goes Wrong When People Skip the Checklist

The two failures we see most often are a wrong-phase power unit and a slab that won’t hold an anchor. Both are discoverable in an afternoon and both are expensive to fix after the crate lands. Third on the list is the ceiling: an owner measures to the bottom of the truss and forgets the light fixture, the overhead door track, or the crossbar clearance a raised truck needs on top of that.

Fourth — and this one stings — is buying used to save money. We get calls constantly from people who bought a twenty-year-old unit off a farm auction with no ALI label, no serial plate, no manual and cables of unknown age. Sometimes we can source parts and make it safe. Sometimes we look at the carriage and tell the owner honestly that we won’t put our name on it. Cables, locks and cylinders are all replaceable, but if the columns are bent or the manufacturer is out of business, you’ve bought scrap.
