A Cedar Rapids quick-lube operator added a restoration-and-metal-work expansion service to his stores in the fall and called us for automotive two post lifts sized for the new work. His stores had been running four-post drive-on lifts since opening because oil changes only need wheels-off-the-ground for a minute and a drive-on is faster. But restoration and metal work means chassis-off, arms-on-frame service, and that requires a proper two-post. Cost Line 1: The Lift Itself for Metal-Work Duty
Restoration and metal work punishes lifts differently than oil-change work. Cars sit on the lift for hours, sometimes days, while sheet metal work, welding, and cutting happen underneath. The lift’s cylinder is loaded continuously rather than cycled up and down constantly. That duty cycle rewards heavy hydraulic construction and high-quality safety-lock hardware more than it rewards fast cycle speed.
We quoted the Cedar Rapids operator a Rotary SPOA10 versymmetric overhead 10,000-pound two-post lift as the primary equipment. Mid-tier bracket, mid-single-digit thousands as bare equipment, adjustable frame cradles included, pinch-weld skids added for the daily-driver work that will still roll through the bay occasionally. Total lift-equipment line before install was in the mid-$6,000s. Compare that to a bottom-tier import lift at about $3,800 that would technically work but would not survive twenty years of restoration-shop duty. Automotive two post lifts for shops that put vehicles up for long durations should be over-spec’d on the hydraulic side even more than on the structural side. Cylinders and cables live under continuous load in this environment, and cheap ones fail on that pattern faster than any other.
Cost Line 2: Electrical Circuit and Phase Requirements
Every two-post lift on the market runs on single-phase 220-240V, drawing 15 to 25 amps at start-up and settling to 12 to 18 amps during lift. Three-phase versions exist for shops that already have three-phase service, but for the vast majority of restoration bays and quick-lube expansions, single-phase is the standard and the correct choice.
The Cedar Rapids store had 200-amp single-phase service and a subpanel already installed in the shop area with three empty double-pole slots. Adding a dedicated 30-amp double-pole breaker cost $32 in parts. Running 10-gauge romex from the panel to a NEMA 6-30 receptacle at the base of the driver-side lift column took the electrician about three hours at $95/hour, and the receptacle itself was $18. Total electrical line for this install: about $335 including permit and inspection. Compare that to the retrofit-after-slab cost of $1,400 to $2,200 for a similar circuit if the conduit had to be surface-mounted. Automotive two post lifts scoped correctly at the front end of an expansion save two to three times the electrical cost versus retrofitting later, which is why we push customers to plan the lift electrical the same day they plan the general shop electrical.
Cost Line 3: Air Compressor and Air-Line Kit
The lift’s mechanical safety locks disengage with a small air cylinder on each column. Manual release with the pull cable is always possible, but an air-line kit lets a single lever at the operator station release both locks simultaneously with about 90 PSI of shop air. We include the air-line kit on almost every install because it saves years of unbalanced-descent wear on the cable equalization system and it is a genuinely useful ergonomic upgrade.
The Cedar Rapids store had a 80-gallon compressor already installed in the utility room for the tire-service portion of the business. Running a 3/8-inch line from the compressor to the lift zone was about $95 in tubing and fittings plus one hour of labor. The air-line kit for the lift itself is around $130 and it comes packaged with a filter-regulator. Total air line: about $325. If the store had not already had a compressor, we would have quoted a 60-gallon single-phase compressor for about $850 to $1,100 additional. Automotive two post lifts do not require compressed air to operate, but they are meaningfully better with it, and if you are planning an expansion the compressor is usually already on the drawings for other reasons.
Cost Line 4: Concrete Testing and Anchor Prep
Two-post lift anchors require a minimum of 4-1/4 inches of 3,000-PSI concrete for full manufacturer warranty. The Cedar Rapids store had been built in 2003 with a nominal 4-inch commercial slab. We test-cored a knockout in a corner adjacent to the intended lift zone and hit 4-3/8 inches of clean concrete with visible mesh reinforcement. That was tight but acceptable.
Test coring cost $180 — a specialty concrete contractor came out with a small diamond core drill and pulled a 2-inch plug. That $180 is money well spent on any building older than five years where the concrete history is uncertain. If the core had come back at 3-1/2 inches or if the mesh had been rusted through, we would have recommended sawing out the lift zone and repouring at 6 inches with fresh #4 rebar, which is a $2,200 to $2,800 job depending on square footage. On this store the core came back adequate and we proceeded with anchors as originally quoted. Automotive two post lifts are only as safe as the concrete under them, and we would rather spend $180 on a test core than have an anchor pull out during the first year of operation.
Cost Line 5: Ancillary Package for Metal Work
Restoration and metal work needs pad and adapter options that daily-driver work does not. Frame-cradle adapters that catch under the frame rail instead of on the rocker, adjustable stack blocks in 2-inch through 6-inch heights, pinch-weld skids in truck-bed rubber, and a set of low-profile pinch adapters for cars with dropped ride heights.
We quoted the full ancillary package at about $520 for this install. That gets the lift ready for anything from a 1969 Camaro on stands to a 2023 F-150 with 20-inch wheels rolling in for a state inspection. Skipping the ancillary package is the single biggest mistake first-time restoration-shop buyers make, and it is the one that shows up as damage on customer cars within the first three months. Cost Line 6: Install Labor and First-Cycle Testing
Install labor by our two-tech Ames crew for a single overhead lift on prepped concrete with electrical and air stubbed at the right locations runs six to eight hours of on-site work plus travel. For Cedar Rapids the crew leaves Ames early and is on-site by 8:30 a.m., wrapping the install and post-install testing by mid-afternoon. Total install labor line: about $1,400 including delivery from our warehouse.
Post-install testing is the piece that gets skipped by cheaper installers. Our crew runs a 10-point checklist that covers anchor torque verification, cable tension measurement, cylinder bleed check, latch engagement at each safe height, arm restraint gear function, and a full up-and-down cycle under an actual test load before we sign off. That checklist is documented in the customer’s install file with photos of anchor torques and cable tensions, so if there is a question three years later we have the baseline numbers to compare against. Automotive two post lifts installed correctly on day one require dramatically less service across their lifetime than lifts installed with a fast-and-loose checklist that skips torque and tension verification. This is where the buying decision actually pays off long-term.
Total Ticket, Financing, and First-Year Payback
All in, the Cedar Rapids quick-lube’s restoration-bay expansion came in at roughly $9,100 total — lift equipment in the mid-$6,000s, electrical $335, air line and kit $325, concrete test coring $180, ancillary package $520, install labor and delivery $1,400. Financed at 0 percent for twelve months through the checkout program with about $1,000 down at deposit. Monthly payment was around $675 during the payoff window.
First-year gross-margin capture from the restoration expansion service, according to the operator’s numbers six months in, is running about $2,400 per month in incremental revenue with margin around 55 percent — roughly $1,320 per month in new gross margin. That covers the lift payment nearly twice over and pays back the entire expansion capital investment in about seven months. That is a very good outcome and it is not unusual for restoration-service expansions off an existing quick-lube base.
