Restoration guys ask us harder questions about automotive two post lifts than almost anybody else, and we like that. A small-fleet operator running a restoration and metal fabrication shop along the Iowa-Illinois corridor called us last spring with a problem that had nothing to do with capacity: he had a 1966 pickup on stands with the bed off, the doors off, and about 900 pounds of body panels sitting on a cart, and he needed to get that shell in the air for floor pan work without the arms creeping out from under a vehicle that no longer weighed what the sticker said. That is an arm restraint and safety-cam question, not a tonnage question, and it is where we spend most of our time with restoration shops.

Why Restoration Work Stresses a Lift Differently

A production shop puts a complete car on the arms, lifts it, does a brake job, and sets it down. The vehicle keeps its weight and its balance the whole time. Restoration work does the opposite. You strip a bed, pull a drivetrain, cut out a quarter panel, and the center of gravity migrates while the car is in the air. We have seen a stripped shell go so nose-heavy after the front clip came off that the rear arms had almost no load on them at all — and an arm with no load on it is an arm that can be nudged out of position by a knee, a creeper, or a floor jack handle.

That is the reason we push restoration shops toward specific hardware rather than just a capacity number. Automotive two post lifts in the 10,000 lb class are wildly overbuilt for a 3,200 lb Chevelle, so capacity is rarely the limiting factor. What matters is whether the arm restraints positively lock at every arm position, whether the safety cams are audible and countable as the carriages rise, and whether the pads can be built up tall enough to clear a rocker panel that you have already cut open. We would rather sell a shop a mid-capacity column with excellent restraint hardware than a heavier column with sloppy gear-and-pin restraints that were designed to be reset by the vehicle’s own weight.

How Arm Restraints Actually Work

Most two-post arm restraints are a spring-loaded gear ring at the arm pivot with a pin or pawl that drops into it once the arm carries load. Lower the lift, the pin lifts out, the arm swings free. Raise it, the pin drops, the arm is locked to that arc. It is a good system when it is clean and adjusted. It fails in three predictable ways, and we see all three in restoration shops specifically: the gear teeth pack with weld spatter and grinding dust so the pin cannot seat fully; the return spring stretches or rusts and stops pushing the pin down; and the arm gets loaded so lightly on a stripped shell that the pin never gets pressed home in the first place.

Our fix list is short and cheap. Blow out and grease the restraint gears every time you do a monthly inspection, not once a year. Replace the restraint springs at the first sign of sag — they are a few dollars and we stock them for every major brand. And on a light or unbalanced shell, physically check each arm after the first few inches of lift: put a hand on it and try to swing it. If it moves, set the car back down and reposition. Safety-Cam Engagement: Count the Clicks

The safety cams — the mechanical locks that catch the carriage at fixed heights — are the second half of the story. Every two-post column has a ladder of lock positions, and the latch on each carriage should drop into the same rung at the same time. When they do not, the car sits crooked on the locks, and one column carries load it was never meant to carry alone. On a restoration project that can sit in the air for three weeks between paint stages, that asymmetry has a long time to do damage.

We teach the same habit to every shop we install for: raise past the height you want, then lower onto the locks and listen. You should hear both sides seat, and you should be able to walk around and see both latches fully in the rung, not perched on the lip. If one side lags, the usual culprits are a stretched equalizer cable, a dry latch pivot, or a cable that has jumped a sheave groove. We adjust equalization on service calls constantly, and it is a fifteen-minute job when it is caught early and a cable replacement when it is not. Restoration shops leave vehicles parked on the locks far longer than general repair shops do, so on automotive two post lifts in that environment we recommend checking lock engagement weekly rather than monthly. Also keep the lock release cable free — a binding release is the reason people start blocking latches open, which is the worst thing you can do to a two-post.

Configuration A: Clearfloor Two-Post with Extended-Height Columns

The first setup we quoted that restoration shop was a clearfloor asymmetric two-post, 10,000 lb class, with taller-than-standard columns and a full stack of screw-up pad adapters. Clearfloor means the equalizer cables and hydraulic line run through an overhead crossbar rather than a floor plate, so the bay floor is completely open. For a shop that rolls engine hoists, welding carts, a plasma table cart, and a sandblast cabinet under and around a vehicle every single day, that open floor is worth real money. Nothing to trip on, nothing to catch a caster, nothing wedging body filler dust into a base channel.

The tradeoff is ceiling height. Clearfloor columns plus the crossbar need serious headroom, and the restoration shop in question had a 14-foot clear span, so it worked. Where it does not work, we hear about it fast — a shop in northeast Missouri told us he had a 16-foot door but a loft over one side of the bay, which killed the overhead option outright. Extended columns also change your rise, which is a genuine benefit when you are doing floor pan and rocker work while standing upright instead of hunched. Among automotive two post lifts, the clearfloor design remains our default recommendation for restoration and metal work whenever the building allows it, and Rotary and Challenger both build clearfloor models we install regularly across eastern Iowa.

Configuration B: Baseplate Two-Post in a Low-Ceiling Building

The second configuration we priced was a baseplate two-post — hoses and cables routed through a plate at floor level, no overhead beam. This is the answer for pole buildings with low sidewalls, for bays with a mezzanine, and for anybody who ever wants to put something taller than a car between the columns. A shop up in North Dakota called us with almost exactly this constraint: 6,000 lb heaviest vehicle, no overhead possible, 139 inches of max height to work with. Baseplate was the only honest answer.

For restoration specifically, the baseplate has one real drawback and one underrated advantage. The drawback is the plate itself — it is a low ramp across the middle of your bay that creeper wheels, jack casters, and dolly wheels have to cross, and in a shop full of rolling equipment that gets old. The advantage is that with no crossbar overhead, you can get a hoist, a gantry, or a chain fall directly above the vehicle, which matters enormously when you are pulling a body off a frame. Between the two designs, we tell customers to let the building decide first and the workflow decide second. Plenty of automotive two post lifts in Iowa restoration shops are baseplate models simply because the building was built for hay, not for cars, and that is a perfectly good reason.

Concrete, Anchors, and the Thing Nobody Checks

We get asked about slab thickness constantly, and we have learned to be blunt: if you do not know what is under your bay, we do not know either, and neither does the lift manufacturer. Most two-post installations want a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 psi, and many of the higher-capacity models want more. A guy in northern Missouri told us his slab was “about five inches, maybe less” — that “maybe less” is the whole ballgame. We core or drill a test hole before we anchor anything, every time.

Restoration shops have a specific extra risk here: control joints and old equipment pads. Farm buildings and converted implement sheds are full of pours from different decades, and a column that lands half on a 1978 pour and half on a 2009 pour will never stay plumb. When the slab will not support the anchors, the fix is a cut-out and a fresh footing pad per the manufacturer’s spec — usually a few feet square and considerably deeper than the surrounding floor. It adds a day and some cost, but it is far cheaper than a column that walks. We also re-torque anchors at the 30-day mark on every install, because anchors relax. What We Actually Recommend for Restoration Shops

If your ceiling clears it, buy clearfloor. Buy asymmetric arms so you can open doors on a car that is going to live in that bay for months. Buy the tall pad adapter set on day one, because you will need it the first time you lift a truck with running boards or a car with pinch welds you have already cut through. Spend the money on a name-brand column with proper restraint hardware rather than the cheapest thing with the same capacity number stamped on it — the difference in restraint and lock design between tiers is exactly where your safety margin lives.

Then treat maintenance as part of the job, not an afterthought. Grease the restraint gears, replace tired springs, keep the equalizer cables adjusted, and never block a safety latch open.
