Automotive two post lifts are not the first thing most people picture inside an RV and trailer service shop, but that is exactly what a seasonal-storage operation outside Council Bluffs called us about a couple of winters ago. They had plenty of drive-through space for coaches and bumper-pull trailers, and absolutely nowhere to get under a customer’s tow vehicle, a dually, or a stacked-up pile of shop trucks that needed brakes before spring rush. We walked their building, measured the slab, argued a little about column placement, and set them up. What follows is the honest version of that first year — from the day we poured attention into the layout through the first real service season on the equipment.

Why an RV Shop Needed a Two-Post at All

The shop’s original plan was another drive-on. They already had a long pit-style workflow for coaches and a big open floor for trailer axle work, and the owner assumed a four-post was the obvious next purchase. The problem showed up in the service tickets. Roughly a third of their revenue was coming off the tow vehicles that hauled the trailers in — three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups needing brakes, hub service, exhaust patching, and driveline inspections. A drive-on ramp gives you nothing when you need the wheels hanging free, and the crew had been doing hub work on jack stands in a cold corner of the building. That is slow, it is miserable in January, and it quietly costs a shop more in labor hours than the equipment ever would.

Once we framed it that way, the decision got easy. Wheels-free access is the whole point, and it is the reason automotive two post lifts still outsell every other style in general service. The other factor was storage season. From October through April this shop is mostly holding customer units and doing prep work, which means bay space is at a premium and anything that takes up permanent floor real estate has to earn it. Two columns and a clear floor between them earn their keep — when the lift is down and the arms are swung to the columns, that bay goes back to being open floor for a trailer or a parts staging area. A four-post never gives you that space back.

Measuring the Building Before Ordering Anything

We do not quote a lift off a phone call and a hopeful guess. Before this shop ordered, we spent an afternoon with a tape measure and a rotary hammer. Ceiling height came in a hair over fifteen feet at the truss, which is generous, but the overhead door track and a run of conduit cut the usable clear height in the target bay down closer to thirteen and a half. That mattered because the owner wanted an overhead-style unit for the cleaner floor, and an overhead crossbar eats real headroom. We confirmed a lifted dually plus the crossbar still cleared, but only after we relocated one lighting circuit.

The slab was the bigger question. The building had been poured in two phases, and the older half was thinner than the newer pour. We cored test holes and found roughly five inches in the old section — usable in some cases, marginal for a heavier-capacity unit. This is where a lot of buyers get in trouble ordering online. Concrete thickness, cure strength, rebar, and distance from a control joint or slab edge all matter for anchoring, and no spec sheet on a website knows what is under your floor. We placed the columns in the newer pour with an anchor pattern well clear of the joints. If we had needed to, the answer would have been saw-cutting and pouring dedicated footing pads, which is a day of work and a lot cheaper than a lift that walks its anchors loose in year three.

Choosing Between Clearfloor and Baseplate

This comes up on nearly every call. Clearfloor units — sometimes called overhead lifts — run the equalization cables and hydraulic hose through a header at the top, leaving nothing on the ground between the columns. Baseplate units run everything through a low channel across the floor. Neither is inherently better; they solve different building problems. If you have low ceilings, a baseplate is often the only way to get a tall vehicle up. If you roll floor jacks, transmission jacks, and creepers across that bay all day, the tripping and rolling hassle of a floor channel gets old fast.

For the Council Bluffs shop, the header won because of transmission and exhaust work. Rolling a tall jack under a lifted pickup is far easier with nothing crossing the floor, and their crew was already used to that from a previous shop. We have installed the opposite for plenty of customers, though — one central Iowa operation we work with had a ten-foot door and no ceiling to spare, so a baseplate was the only honest recommendation. Among automotive two post lifts, the split in what we sell runs maybe seventy-thirty toward clearfloor, and the thirty percent is almost always ceiling-limited. Be realistic about your building rather than buying the style you saw in a magazine. Our team also had to spec a shutoff bar height that would not slam into the crossbar on a lifted truck with a light bar, which is the kind of detail that only shows up when someone has installed a few hundred of these.

Capacity, Arms, and What Actually Gets Lifted

The owner’s first instinct was to buy the biggest capacity available. We talked him down, and here is why. Capacity ratings on automotive two post lifts describe the total vehicle weight the columns and carriages are rated for, but the arms and adapters are what physically touch the truck. A one-ton crew cab with a service body sits around 8,500 pounds; a loaded dually might push past ten. A 12,000-pound unit handled everything on their ticket list with real margin. Jumping to 15,000 or 18,000 would have meant a wider column spread, more anchor demand, and a bigger check for capacity they would use twice a year.

Arms mattered more than capacity. We specced asymmetric arms with a three-stage front arm so the crew could reach the pinch welds on a low-slung tow rig and still stretch out to the frame rails on a pickup. Screw-pad adapters and a set of truck adapters came with the order, and those adapters are what make the difference between a fast lift and a technician crawling around hunting a lift point. If you take one thing from this section: budget for adapters. We see shops spend serious money on the equipment and then cheap out on a hundred dollars of stackable pads, and it costs them minutes on every single ticket. Over a year of pickup service, that adds up to real money.

Bay Layout and Workflow Around the Lift

Where the columns go determines how the whole shop moves. This building had a wall on one side of the target bay and a parts loft on the other — a very common constraint, and one we hear on leads constantly. That meant the drive-in approach had to be square and generous, because you cannot easily correct a crooked approach with a wall on your left. We set the columns so there was a full working aisle on the door side and just enough clearance on the loft side for a technician and a tool cart.

We also moved the air drop and added a second one. A lot of shops running automotive two post lifts put a single air line at the base of one column and then spend a year dragging a hose around the vehicle. Two drops, one per side, mounted high enough to clear a lifted truck, is a cheap upgrade that pays back immediately. Same with lighting — overhead fixtures directly above the bay throw shadows straight down onto the top of the vehicle, not underneath it. We recommended wall-mounted LED strips at roughly seven feet on both sides so the underside is actually lit when the truck is up. Finally, the drain. This shop does a lot of oil and coolant work, and the original floor slope sent everything toward the parts side. Rotating the bay ninety degrees during planning solved a drainage problem they did not know they had. Layout decisions like these cost nothing at planning time and are expensive to fix afterward.

The First Service Season: What Broke and What Didn’t

Nothing broke, which is the boring answer but the true one. What did happen was a cable stretch at about the four-month mark. Equalization cables on a new unit settle in, and the arms started to come out of level by a noticeable amount. That is normal, it is not a defect, and it is why we tell every customer to plan on a cable adjustment inside the first six months. We came back, re-tensioned, checked the anchor torque, and cycled the safeties. Twenty minutes of work.

The other first-year item was operator habit. The crew had one technician who liked to raise the vehicle to working height and skip the click into the mechanical locks, relying on the hydraulics to hold. We shut that down hard. Every ride goes onto the locks — that is not a preference, it is the entire safety architecture of the machine. We also caught a technician setting the front arms too far forward on a lifted truck, which puts the center of gravity in a place you do not want it. A ten-minute walkthrough with the whole crew fixed both habits. By spring, the shop was cycling three to five pickups a day through that bay during the pre-season rush, and the owner told us the only regret was not doing it two seasons earlier. What We’d Tell the Next RV Shop Owner

Start with your ticket mix, not your floor plan. If a meaningful share of your labor hours goes into tow vehicles, shop trucks, or customer cars that come along with the trailers, you need wheels-free access, and that means a two-post. If your work is genuinely all coaches and axles, spend the money elsewhere. We would rather tell you that up front than sell you something that collects dust.

Second, get the building assessed before you shop. Ceiling clearance, slab thickness, door height, and electrical service are the four things that determine what you can actually install, and they are all knowable in an afternoon. Third, buy from someone who will come back.
