A few years back an RV and trailer service shop down on the Iowa-Missouri border called us because they were tired of doing wheel work on jack stands. They had spent a decade on creepers and bottle jacks servicing bearings, brakes, and tires on travel trailers and tow vehicles, and the owner had finally decided that automotive two post lifts were the answer for the tow-vehicle side of the business. What followed was a year we remember well, because almost every decision they faced is one another shop is facing right now. This is the story from the first site visit through the first real service call, including the overhead-versus-baseplate argument that took two visits to settle.

The Site Visit: A Shop Built for Trailers, Not Cars

Their main bay was long, which is what you would expect from a place that pulls fifth-wheels inside. It was also awkward. One wall carried a mezzanine loft used for parts storage, the opposite wall had a workbench run that nobody wanted to move, and the overhead door was sixteen feet wide with a header lower than the roof structure suggested. Long and narrow is a fine shape for trailer work and a mediocre shape for a two-post, because you need clear width on both sides of the columns for doors and arm swing.

We measured everything: clear ceiling height at the intended column location, distance from each column pad to the nearest control joint, header height at the door, and the swing radius of the loft stairs. Clear height came in a little over eleven feet under the loft edge and closer to fourteen feet in the open span. That single measurement drove the whole configuration debate. We also asked what actually gets lifted, and the answer was mostly three-quarter and one-ton pickups, occasional dually tow vehicles, and passenger cars from staff and neighbors. Nothing over about 9,500 pounds. When people ask us to spec automotive two post lifts, that vehicle inventory matters more than square footage does.

Overhead vs Baseplate: The Argument That Took Two Visits

The owner wanted overhead. He had worked in a dealership years earlier, liked the clean floor, and had watched too many carts catch on floor channels. His lead tech wanted baseplate, because the tall tow vehicles they service would clear the columns instead of nearly touching an overhead beam at full rise. Both were arguing from real experience, which is usually the case.

The tiebreaker was arithmetic. A dually crew cab at roughly 6 feet 8 inches of vehicle height, raised high enough that a tech can stand upright underneath, needs somewhere near 13 to 14 feet of clear space to a beam. In the open span they had it. Under the loft they did not, and the only column position that gave them side clearance on both sides sat partly under that loft edge. So baseplate won on the geometry, not on preference. We specified a baseplate model with tall columns, ran the crossover channel with a proper covered ramp, and located it so tool carts cross at the narrow point of the bay rather than in the main walking lane. Among automotive two post lifts, this is the most common real-world reason baseplate gets chosen: not low ceilings in general, but low ceilings exactly where the columns have to go.

Slab, Anchors, and What We Found Under the Floor

Their slab was poured in two phases years apart, with a cold joint running roughly down the center of the bay. That joint sat close to where we wanted the driver-side column. Anchoring a column base across or adjacent to a cold joint is asking for movement, and movement in a two-post shows up as elongated anchor holes and a column that leans a degree or two under load.

We cored two test holes. The newer half measured a solid six inches of good concrete. The older half came in at four and a half inches with visible aggregate segregation. Four and a half inches technically meets many manufacturer minimums, but not with a cold joint eighteen inches away. So we cut and poured a footing pad for that column: about three feet square, twelve inches deep, doweled into the surrounding slab, and given a full cure before we set anything on it. That added about ten days to the timeline and a modest amount of cost, and it is the difference between a lift that is still plumb in year fifteen and one that is not. Install Day and Commissioning

Install itself was a one-day job once the footing had cured. Columns set and plumbed with shims, anchors torqued to spec in sequence, carriages and cables installed, hydraulic power unit mounted and plumbed, and then the part most people skip: cable and chain equalization. If the two carriages are not synchronized within tolerance, the arms will not sit level, the safety locks will engage unevenly, and the whole thing will feel wrong even though nothing is technically broken.

We cycled it empty a dozen times, then loaded it with a shop truck and cycled it again, rechecking anchor torque afterward because anchors relax slightly after the first real load. Then we walked the crew through lock engagement by ear, arm-restraint function, the overload bypass, and the daily and monthly inspection points. That training session takes about forty-five minutes and prevents most of the service calls we would otherwise get in year one. We also left a laminated inspection card at the power unit. Shops that own automotive two post lifts and actually use the checklist have dramatically fewer surprises than shops that stuff the manual in a drawer.

Tire Rotation and Wheel Work: What Changed

The payoff showed up in tire and wheel work within a week. Previously, a four-tire rotation on a three-quarter-ton with 18-inch wheels meant two jacks, four stands, and a tech on his knees. Afterward it was drive on, set the arms, raise to chest height, and spin all four wheels at once. The owner told us the labor time on a rotation and balance dropped by more than half, and the tech complaints about back pain stopped entirely.

Bearing service on tow vehicles improved even more, because the hub sits at a comfortable working height and you can get a torque wrench square on the nut without contorting. They did have to buy truck adapter extensions, roughly six inches of stack, to reach factory lift points on the taller pickups without the arm pads sliding. That is a normal accessory purchase and we should have pushed it harder at order time. One note specific to RV shops: the trailers themselves still need mobile columns or a proper drive-on solution, and a two-post does not solve that. What it solved was every tow vehicle and every passenger car, which turned out to be most of their billable hours anyway. Our mobile column lift guide covers the trailer side.

The First Service Call, Month Nine

Month nine they called us because one side was drifting down slowly overnight with a truck parked on it. That symptom scares people, and it should get attention, but it is almost never catastrophic. Overnight drift on a two-post is usually one of three things: a leaking hydraulic cylinder seal, a weeping fitting or hose, or a lowering valve not fully seating because of debris. Structural failure does not present as slow, even drift.

In their case it was the lowering valve. Ambient shop dust, which an RV and trailer shop has in abundance, had gotten into the valve seat. We cleaned it, changed the hydraulic fluid because it was overdue anyway, replaced the filter, and the drift stopped. Total time on site was under two hours. We also found one cable with early fraying at a sheave, which we flagged for replacement within six months rather than emergency-ordering it. That is the kind of catch that a scheduled annual inspection buys you. Fluid contamination is the most common cause of nuisance issues we see on automotive two post lifts in dusty environments, and an annual fluid and filter change is cheap insurance.

What We’d Tell the Next RV and Trailer Shop

Three takeaways from that first year. First, measure clear ceiling height at the exact spot the columns will stand, not at the peak of the building, because the difference between those two numbers decides overhead versus baseplate for you. Second, core the slab if there is any doubt at all, especially if it was poured in phases or if there is radiant heat in it. A footing pad adds days and a modest cost; a failed anchor set adds weeks and a lot more. Third, buy the truck adapters at the same time as the lift.

Beyond that, spend the extra money on capacity. They went with a 12,000 lb unit against a maximum vehicle weight under 10,000 lb, and the margin has been comfortable rather than wasteful.
