An RV and trailer service shop in northern Missouri called us in the spring with a challenging brief: they wanted automotive two post lifts for regular service work AND the ability to seasonally store customer vehicles on them during the off months. Two-posts are not usually storage machines, but for a shop that only stores three or four vehicles a season, the math changes. They also had a very specific electrical question: their building was fed 240 single-phase from the utility and they did not want to pay for a phase converter. We walked them through the first year of ownership from install day forward, and the story includes a few surprises that most first-time buyers never think about when signing the order.

Storage on a Two-Post: When It Makes Sense

Automotive two post lifts are designed as service lifts. The typical use pattern is up-work-down within a single shift. Storage lifts are usually four-posts because they support the vehicle across the frame at four contact points and are designed to hold indefinitely. A two-post supports the vehicle at four contact points on the frame lift pads, which are fine for hours or a day but not intended for months of static load. However, for a shop that only stores three or four vehicles a season, buying a dedicated four-post for storage is often not worth the capital.

The compromise: put the storage vehicles on the two-posts during the off months and take them down for service season. That works if you plan for it. It requires vehicle frame pads that are rated for extended static load, cylinders that are inspected before storage begins, and safety-cam ladders that are visually verified engaged. Not every two-post is well-suited. Premium lifts with heavier hydraulic components and better safety-cam engagement are the right choice for a shop that plans to store. Budget lifts are not. The northern Missouri shop understood this and was ready to spend for a lift that could handle both duty cycles across the calendar year.

Electrical Requirements for Automotive Two Post Lifts

Almost every commercial two-post lift in the North American market runs on either 208-230V single-phase or 208-230V three-phase power. Motor sizes typically range from 2 to 3 horsepower. Single-phase versions draw 20-30 amps on a dedicated circuit. Three-phase versions draw about 8-12 amps per phase. The shop’s utility feed determines what you can install. If your building has three-phase power available, three-phase motors are quieter, run cooler, and last longer. If your building has only single-phase, you either install a single-phase lift or add a rotary phase converter for another investment.

For most Iowa and Missouri commercial shops, single-phase 240V is the common utility feed. Automotive two post lifts with single-phase motors are widely available and every major manufacturer offers them. The northern Missouri shop had 240 single-phase from the utility and did not want to add a phase converter. That decision constrained the lifts we could offer. Fortunately the Rotary and Challenger single-phase lines cover the same duty cycles as the three-phase lines, so nothing was lost. The single-phase motors are slightly louder and slightly slower on rise, but the difference is small enough that most operators do not notice after the first week of daily use.

Single-Phase Versus Three-Phase: The Real Difference

The single-phase versus three-phase question is one of the most-asked and least-understood in the shop-build conversation. The real difference is not the lift performance. The real difference is the electrical service to the shop. A single-phase 240V motor draws current in one direction and cycles at 60 Hz. A three-phase 240V motor draws current in three staggered directions at 60 Hz, which gives smoother power delivery and less strain on the motor windings. Over 20 years of duty, three-phase motors typically outlast single-phase by a factor of about 1.5.

But that difference is only relevant if the shop’s electrical service supports three-phase. Rural buildings often do not have three-phase service and adding it from the utility can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Adding a rotary phase converter is cheaper but consumes electrical service and introduces its own maintenance point. For a shop like the northern Missouri RV service business, single-phase was the correct answer because three-phase was not economically available. For a shop that already has three-phase, we recommend three-phase every time. Do not add three-phase infrastructure just to run one lift, but do use it if it exists in your building already.

Install Day at the Missouri Shop

Install day was a two-day project. Day one: uncrating in the shop bay, positioning both columns, plumbing checks with a laser level, marking anchor points, drilling with a rotary hammer. Their concrete was five inches thick with rebar and passed the core-drill test at 4,200 psi. Anchors: three-quarter-inch wedge anchors, seven inches long, torqued to spec. Day two: overhead crossbar (they had 13-foot ceilings that comfortably accommodated the overhead), equalizer cables, hydraulic hoses, electrical hookup to the single-phase disconnect the shop’s electrician had roughed in the previous week.

Total on-site time: about 12 hours across two days. Their first cycle was empty to full-rise, hold for 30 seconds, lower onto safety-cam locks, hold for 30 seconds, lower to floor. Then a loaded cycle with a shop pickup at about 6,500 pounds. Then a customer’s Sprinter van at close to 9,000 pounds. Everything held. We walked them through the daily and weekly maintenance checklists, showed them the arm-restraint gear inspection procedure, and left. Automotive two post lifts install cleanly when the concrete is good and the electrical is prepared. This install had both, which is why it came in on time and on budget with no surprises for the shop owner.

First Six Months of Mixed Service and Storage Use

The first six months ran the normal service duty cycle: about 12 lift cycles per day, mostly RV chassis work and light trailer service. The lifts held up perfectly through the summer service season. When the off-season started in October, they parked three customer vehicles on the lifts for winter storage: two travel trailers and one motorhome chassis. They set the vehicles on frame pads with the arms fully engaged, lowered onto the safety-cam locks at working height (not full rise), released hydraulic pressure, and left them.

We recommended visual inspection every two weeks: check the safety-cam ladder engagement, check the arm-restraint pawls, check for any cylinder weeping. They followed the schedule. All three vehicles came down in April without incident. The lifts had held static load for six months without settling and without leakage. That is the outcome we hope for when a shop uses automotive two post lifts for occasional storage. It only works if the equipment is premium-grade and the maintenance is followed. Skipping either of those two things gets you a bad outcome, and there is no getting around it with hope.

Cable and Cylinder Care Under a Storage Load

When a two-post holds a vehicle statically for months, the cables and cylinders are under sustained load. The cables are not doing any work in that state because the safety-cam locks are holding the vehicle. But the cables are still under tension because the equalizer system keeps them tight to prevent the carriages from drifting. Storage does not accelerate cable wear meaningfully. The cylinders are where the risk lives. As we mentioned, cylinder seals are designed for dynamic loading, not static. If the operator forgets to lower onto the safety-cam locks and releases pressure, the vehicle is being held by the cylinder alone, and seal wear accelerates dramatically.

The critical habit for storage use: always lower onto the safety-cam locks and then release pressure. The lift is now supporting the load through the mechanical ladder and not the hydraulic cylinder. Automotive two post lifts operated this way can hold a storage load for months without degrading the hydraulic system. Operated incorrectly, they will need cylinder rebuilds within two or three storage cycles. The Missouri shop learned the correct habit on day one and has practiced it every storage cycle since. Replacement cables and cylinder parts ship from Iowa stock when a shop does need them.

Year-End Review and the Second Lift Decision

Twelve months in, the northern Missouri shop had two takeaways. First, the mixed service-plus-storage duty cycle worked exactly as we had promised. The lifts were in perfect service condition after a full year including six months of storage load on three of them. Second, they wanted a second bay. The service side of the business had grown enough that having only two two-posts (they had bought two in the initial order) was becoming a bottleneck during peak season. We are back-ordering a third automotive two post lift for delivery in the fall, same model as the first two so the parts stock and the tech training carry over.

That is the story of a well-planned first year. Buy the right lift, install it correctly, follow the maintenance, and it will do everything you asked plus room to grow.
