In daily service, we do not see meaningful reliability differences between a Rotary SPO10 and a Challenger CL10 over the first 10 years. Where the brands diverge is in the small ergonomic details and the local dealer network. In central Iowa, both brands have strong parts support through us; in some other regions, one or the other has a stronger local presence. Challenger shim plates come pre-drilled in more sizes, which speeds up install on out-of-level floors, worth maybe an hour of install labor per lift. Rotary factory documentation is slightly more thorough, especially for the SPO12 and SPOA12 troubleshooting flowcharts. Challenger factory tech-support phone line has, in our experience, been marginally faster to reach a knowledgeable engineer during business hours. Neither brand has a clear structural or safety edge; the ANSI/ALI testing produces effectively identical numbers across the two. In a fleet setting where 8 lifts are running daily inspections, the small ergonomic and support differences add up to maybe 30 to 60 hours of tech time per year in one direction or the other. Small potatoes on an $80,000 annual labor spend, but real.

What we recommend for a West Des Moines inspection fleet

For a West Des Moines small-fleet operator standardizing on automotive two post lifts for annual state inspection work, our default recommendation is a Rotary SPO12 overhead symmetric across all bays, with two exceptions.
