A farm shop owner outside the Quad Cities called us in February because he was tired of doing shock and strut work on jack stands in a gravel-floored machine shed. He had a newer pole building with concrete, a mixed fleet of pickups and a couple of grain-hauling one-tons, and a stack of suspension jobs waiting on spring. What he needed was a straight answer about which automotive two post lifts would actually survive that duty cycle and what he’d be maintaining five years in. We put together a checklist for him that day, and we’ve used it with dozens of rural shops since. Suspension work stresses a two-post differently than oil changes do, and the buying decision should reflect that.

Item 1: Match the Lift to Suspension Work, Not Just Weight

Suspension and shock replacement means the wheels come off and stay off, sometimes for hours, while you fight a rusted strut nut with an impact and a torch. That’s a different job than a fluid service. It means you want the vehicle at chest-to-shoulder height, held on locks rather than hydraulic pressure, with nothing in the way of a long breaker bar swing. It also means the load stays static and eccentric for a long stretch — you’re pulling sideways on a spring compressor while the arms hold a truck that’s now lighter on one corner than it was when you raised it.

That argues for a few specific things. First, generous arm reach at the rear so you can set pads on frame rails rather than pinch welds on a pickup. Second, a lock system with closely spaced positions, so you can set the vehicle at the exact working height instead of six inches too high. Third, real column rigidity — the cheapest units flex visibly when you lean into a stubborn control arm bolt, and that flex is not confidence-inspiring at 60 inches off the floor. When we spec automotive two post lifts for shops doing chassis and suspension repair, we prioritize lock granularity and arm reach over headline capacity every single time. A 10,000 lb unit with good geometry beats a 12,000 lb unit with clumsy arms.

Item 2: Measure the Building Before You Shop Anything

Farm shops have unusual dimensions. Tall sidewalls, big sliding doors, sometimes a loft on one side and a workbench wall on the other. Our Quad Cities customer had a 16-foot door opening and a hay loft over the left third of the building, which immediately shaped the lift placement and ruled out one model. Before you look at a single product page, write down: ceiling height at the lowest point over the proposed bay, sidewall height, door opening height and width, distance from the nearest wall to the intended column, and distance from the far column to whatever’s on the other side.

Then add clearance. You need room to open the doors of the vehicle you’re lifting on both sides, room to walk a floor jack around, and room for the lift’s own column footprint plus a service path. A common mistake is measuring the bay as if the vehicle were the only thing in it. We generally want at least three feet of working space outboard of each column for suspension work, because that’s where you’re standing with a spring compressor. Among the automotive two post lifts we install, the difference between a comfortable install and a cramped one is usually eighteen inches of planning nobody did. Also note your power: single-phase 220V is the norm in rural shops, but we’ve walked into buildings wired for nothing but 110V lighting.

Item 3: Verify Concrete Thickness, Strength, and Age

Manufacturers publish minimum slab specs for a reason, and the anchors on a two-post carry the entire overturning load. A pole building poured for equipment storage may be four inches with no rebar and no thickened edge, which is fine for parking a combine and marginal for anchoring columns. We ask three questions: how thick, how old, and what strength. If the answer to any of them is “I’m not sure,” we core-test before we drill. Cutting and pouring proper footing pads is a half-day job and dramatically cheaper than discovering an anchor pulling out with a truck in the air.

Cracks matter too. A control joint running through the intended anchor zone means we shift the layout or pour new pads. Fresh concrete needs full cure time — typically 28 days minimum — before anchors go in, so if you’re building new, sequence the pour early. We’ve also had rural customers with in-floor heat loops, and drilling into PEX is a repair nobody wants. We scan first when heat is present. The point of this checklist item is simple: the slab is structural to the lift. When you’re comparing automotive two post lifts, budget for concrete work as a line item rather than a surprise, and get the measurement done before you sign anything.

Item 4: Understand Cable Inspection Intervals Before You Own It

Equalization cables are the part of a two-post that most owners never look at until something goes wrong. They don’t lift the vehicle — hydraulics do that — but they keep the two carriages traveling together, and a failed cable means one side drifts while the other holds. Manufacturers generally call for a visual inspection monthly and a detailed inspection annually, and the ANSI-referenced guidance most shops follow puts a documented annual inspection by a qualified inspector on the calendar. In a farm shop that’s easy to skip. Don’t.

What you’re looking for: broken wires, especially at the sheaves and at the terminations; flat spots or kinks; corrosion or rust bleeding; frayed strands you can catch with a rag; and slack that suggests the cable has stretched. On automotive two post lifts, cables typically get replaced somewhere in the five-to-ten-year window depending on cycle count and environment, and we replace them in matched sets rather than one at a time. Rural shops are usually on the shorter end of that range because of dust, humidity swings, and salt tracked in off winter roads. We keep replacement cables and sheaves in stock for the common Rotary and Challenger models, and we’d rather sell you a set on schedule than get a call about a carriage that dropped four inches.

Item 5: Ask About Safety Locks and How They’re Serviced

Mechanical locks are what actually hold the vehicle once you’ve raised it. Hydraulics get it up there; the locks keep it there. On a suspension job where you’re applying real lateral force for an hour, you want to hear both locks engage crisply and you want to be able to inspect the lock ladders without disassembling the column. Ask before you buy: how are the locks actuated, how are they released, and what does a lock replacement involve? Some designs make lock service a twenty-minute job. Others require dropping the carriage.

Air-actuated lock release is standard on most current commercial-grade units, which means you need shop air routed to the lift. In a farm shop with a small compressor at the other end of the building, that’s a plumbing job worth planning. We also check lock synchronization at every service call — if one side engages a notch before the other, the vehicle sits crooked and the load path shifts. That’s the single most common thing we correct on used automotive two post lifts that customers bought private-party. If you’re buying secondhand, our advice is to have someone qualified look at the locks, the cables, and the anchors before the first vehicle goes up. We’ve inspected plenty of used units and cleared them; we’ve also condemned a few.

Item 6: Plan Fluid, Hose, and Seal Maintenance Realistically

The hydraulic side of a two-post is simple and durable, which lulls owners into ignoring it. Fluid level should be checked a few times a year and the fluid itself changed on the manufacturer’s schedule — many owners never change it once. Contaminated fluid chews pump internals and cylinder seals, and a weeping cylinder that drifts under load is both annoying and unsafe. In an unheated Iowa shop, cold-weather viscosity matters too; the wrong fluid makes a lift crawl in January and mask other problems.

Hoses are the other wear item. On overhead-style units the hose runs across the top beam and flexes every cycle; on baseplate units it runs through the floor ramp where carts and jacks roll over it. Either way, inspect for chafing at every bend and clamp point. We carry cylinders, seal kits, power units, and hose assemblies for the brands we service, and we can usually identify a part from a photo of the data plate. The realistic annual maintenance burden on well-built automotive two post lifts is a couple of hours of your own attention plus one professional inspection. That’s it. Skipping it is what turns a fifteen-year lift into a seven-year lift.

Item 7: Decide New vs. Used With Clear Eyes

Plenty of the calls we take start with “I’d like a used one if possible,” and that’s a fair instinct — a well-maintained older Rotary from a closing dealership can be a genuine bargain. But the math has to include what you’ll spend to make it right: new cables, possibly new locks, fresh fluid, a full anchor set, freight, and rigging. We’ve seen used units where that adds up to more than the gap to a new mid-tier model, and the new one comes with a warranty and a current parts catalog. We’ve also seen used units that needed nothing but a service and an install.

The deciding factors are usually brand and documentation. If it’s a brand we stock parts for and the seller can tell you its history, used is worth pursuing. If it’s an unbadged import with no data plate, walk.
