Late last fall we installed a pair of automotive two post lifts in an overlanding shop just outside Ankeny, and it’s a good case study because everything about that job was different from a normal car-lift install. The owner builds one-off suspension kits for lifted Jeeps and full-size Chevys, and he needed to be able to pull entire coil-over assemblies at ride height without unbolting a control arm. His previous lift — a discount two-post from an online marketplace — couldn’t safely support a lifted Wrangler with a rooftop tent because the vehicle’s center of gravity was well above the arm-pad centerline. The Center-of-Gravity Problem on Lifted Vehicles

A stock Jeep Wrangler has a center of gravity around twenty-nine inches off the ground. Add a four-inch suspension lift, thirty-seven-inch tires, and a rooftop tent, and that center of gravity climbs to nearly forty inches. When you place that vehicle on automotive two post lifts and raise it, the arm pads are supporting a much taller lever arm than the lift’s engineers assumed. The math starts to matter.

The Ankeny shop was seeing that reality every day. Their old discount lift would visibly rock when a tech pushed sideways on a raised vehicle, and the arm-restraint system had already worn a groove in the arm gear. We stepped them up to a fifteen-thousand-pound Rotary with a wider column spacing and taller safety-lock capacity, which raised the effective stability margin substantially. That kind of stability is not something you can specify by reading the sticker capacity — it’s a function of column stiffness, arm-restraint torque, and lock geometry. On a suspension shop’s automotive two post lifts, those design details matter more than the headline load rating.

ALI Gold certification tests automotive two post lifts under fatigue cycling at rated load, arm retention under sideload, and lock-hold under partial cylinder failure. Overlanding rigs stress every one of those tests. A tech pulling a rear coil-over transfers substantial sideload into the arm pads as the axle drops and the springs unload. Non-certified lifts can shed pads under exactly this load pattern.

Our Ankeny customer had never seen an arm-restraint gear failure himself but had heard secondhand stories from other overland builders. The Gold certification adds roughly eight to twelve percent to the sticker cost of a comparable non-certified lift and is the single best insurance product a suspension shop can buy. Arm Pads and Frame Rail Contact on Body-on-Frame Trucks

Body-on-frame trucks — Wranglers, full-size Chevys and Fords, Toyota Tundras — have frame rails that sit lower than the pinch welds on a unibody car. The arm pads on standard automotive two post lifts are sized for pinch-weld contact and can slip on flat frame rails without proper adapters. The Ankeny shop needed a drop-in adapter set that gave a positive mechanical location on frame rails, not just friction.

We spec’d a set of Rotary truck adapters with a machined pocket that captures the rail, plus tall pin-type adapters for the lifted Wranglers where the frame sits above the standard arm-pad reach. Both adapters are recessed in the arm cup between jobs so techs don’t lose them. The whole adapter kit added a couple percent to the lift package cost and eliminated the number-one drop hazard the shop had been living with. Every suspension shop should budget for adapters in the initial purchase, not as an afterthought.

Coil-Over Removal Clearance Without Dropping Control Arms

The Ankeny shop’s main workflow is coil-over swaps: unbolt the top hat, unbolt the bottom mount, drop the assembly, and re-install the new one. On a lifted Wrangler the coil-over is thirty inches tall fully extended. To remove it without unbolting a control arm you need vertical clearance between the top hat and the fender well, plus enough arm reach to pad the vehicle far enough forward that the axle sits at full droop.

We measured the shop’s ceiling at fourteen feet clear and spec’d a taller-rise lift package that gave forty inches of clearance between the raised fender and the shop lights at full lift. That was enough headroom to walk a coil-over out from under the vehicle without partial-disassembly workarounds. Combined with three-stage front arms, the shop can now pull coil-overs on any lifted vehicle in their bay in under fifteen minutes each. Their labor time on suspension jobs dropped by roughly a third the week we finished commissioning.

Twelve-Thousand Pound Capacity vs Ten-Thousand — the Real Choice

For a suspension shop, the ten-versus-twelve-thousand-pound question isn’t really about vehicle weight. It’s about margin. A loaded overlanding Tundra with a bumper, winch, roof rack, tent, and full fuel can push seventy-eight hundred pounds. That’s inside a ten-thousand pound rating on paper, but running at seventy-eight percent load cycle after cycle is not where you want a lift to live.

We recommend twelve-thousand-pound automotive two post lifts as the floor for any shop touching lifted trucks. Fifteen-thousand-pound lifts are worth considering if your mix includes crew-cab dually diesels or one-ton adventure builds. The Ankeny shop ended up with two fifteens, which sounds like overkill for a shop that mostly touches Jeeps until you look at the customer list and realize the occasional six-wheel Ram is on it. Sizing up on capacity costs less than sizing down after you outgrow a lift. The install labor is identical either way, so the marginal cost of the bigger lift is just the equipment delta.

Install Day in Ankeny — What We Learned

The Ankeny install ran over two days because the shop wanted us to commission both lifts consecutively rather than lose two bays at once. Day one was the front bay: core-drill anchor holes, set columns, cable, plumb, oil-fill, load-test. Day two was the rear bay on the same sequence. Both were finished before close of business each day. The shop was back to full production the following Monday morning.

The one surprise we hit was a slightly off-square anchor pattern on the second bay because the slab had been poured decades ago with a two-percent slope for drainage. We shimmed the primary column base plate to bring it plumb, verified with a laser level, and torqued the anchors to the manufacturer spec. That kind of on-site adjustment is why we send experienced installers rather than freight-carrier drop crews. Every older shop has a slab surprise, and how the install crew handles it separates a good install from a mediocre one.

Post-Install Training on Suspension-Specific Loading

The last piece of the case study is training. Automotive two post lifts don’t fail from equipment defects most of the time — they fail from misuse. We spent the afternoon of day two walking every tech in the shop through the ten-second pre-lift check, the correct arm-pad placement on lifted Wranglers, and the audible cue that says the safety locks have engaged. That kind of training is included in every install we do; some vendors treat it as a paid add-on, which is exactly backwards.

Six months later the Ankeny shop had zero incidents and had passed a state OSHA walkthrough with no findings. That’s the outcome we want for every suspension shop we equip. Sizing the lift correctly, choosing ALI Gold hardware, budgeting for adapters, and training the crew are all controllable variables. The uncontrollable variable — the customer who shows up with a modified vehicle you weren’t expecting — is exactly why the controllable variables matter.
