A tire and alignment shop owner in Sioux City called us in early fall about his older automotive two post lifts and a specific worry. He’d taken on a seasonal vehicle storage side business, keeping about fifteen customer cars indoors on lifts through the winter, and he wasn’t sure his arm restraints and safety cams were reliable enough to sit under load for four months at a stretch. It’s the right question to ask. Most tire shop owners think about safety systems in terms of a quick service cycle: up, work, down. Storage duty is a completely different loading pattern, and the safety components on a lift need to be evaluated with that in mind before you park a customer’s Corvette overhead until April.

Why Tire Shop Storage Duty Is Different

A tire and alignment shop that adds seasonal vehicle storage suddenly turns its service lifts into stationary rack space for months. That is a duty cycle most automotive two post lifts weren’t originally purchased for. The mechanical safety cams that make the difference between a controlled descent and a catastrophic drop are designed for daily engagement — they get exercised on every service, and any wear or corrosion is caught quickly. When a lift sits engaged for four months, that exercise cycle disappears, and any partial-engagement condition becomes a long-term risk instead of a same-day catch.

The Sioux City owner had four lifts on his floor, all somewhere between 12 and 20 years old, and he’d never had a safety event. But he’d also never held a vehicle overhead for more than an eight-hour shift. Our first advice on any storage-duty conversion is to inspect and, if needed, refresh the safety systems before you rely on them for the season. That inspection isn’t complicated, and we walk any shop owner through it on the phone or in person. The checklist below is what we used with him last October.

Step One: Verify Full Safety Cam Engagement

Raise the lift to full height with no vehicle on it. Listen for the audible click of each safety cam engaging as the lift comes up. Then release the hydraulic pressure completely and let the lift settle onto the mechanical safeties. On a properly working lift, the settle is zero. Any measurable settle means one or both cams aren’t fully seated in the ratchet teeth, and that’s a condemnable condition until it’s fixed. On the Sioux City tire shop’s third lift, the driver-side cam settled about half an inch. That was the one that spent all summer on shorter vehicles that didn’t force full engagement.

The fix is usually cheap: clean the cam pivot, replace a worn cam spring, and confirm the ratchet ladder inside the column isn’t chewed. On automotive two post lifts from Rotary or Challenger the cam kit runs about $180 in parts. On some older imports the cam assembly is proprietary and can be harder to source. The Sioux City lift was a Challenger, so we had the parts on the shelf and installed the new cam kit in about ninety minutes on-site. That saved him from parking a customer vehicle on a partially-engaged safety.

Step Two: Physically Test Arm Restraints

Arm restraints keep the lift arms from swinging out from under the vehicle while it’s raised. On a service cycle, if a restraint fails you notice it quickly because you’re moving around the lift. On storage duty, a restraint that lets an arm creep two inches over four months can mean the vehicle is no longer centered on its lift points when you come back for it in April. That is a bad discovery. Every restraint should positively lock into a detent hole when the arm is under a vehicle, and it should require deliberate lift-and-pull to release.

Physically try to swing each arm with the restraint engaged. It should not move. If it moves at all, the restraint pin is worn, the detent holes are wallowed, or the spring is weak. All three are cheap fixes on major-brand automotive two post lifts, but they need to be caught before storage. On the Sioux City visit we replaced restraint pins on two of his four lifts. The parts were under $60 each. The alternative — a customer’s vehicle shifting off its pads at 2 a.m. in an empty shop — is unthinkable, so this check is non-negotiable before storage-duty use.

Step Three: Set Vehicles on Rubber, Not Steel

Adapter pads and stacked rubber blocks are worth the money for storage duty. Steel-on-metal pinch points against a vehicle’s frame can leave marks that show up when the customer picks up in spring, and those marks are exactly the kind of complaint that turns a good side business into an angry Google review. Every storage-duty lift should have proper rubber adapters sized to the vehicles being stored. For a mix of passenger cars and SUVs the standard round adapters plus a set of taller adapters for trucks and Jeeps is what most tire shops end up with.

We also recommend confirming lift point contact is on the manufacturer’s designated lift points, not on jackable panels or plastic pinch welds. This matters more on modern unibody cars than most technicians realize. A customer Porsche stored for four months on the wrong pinch weld will come out with a permanent dimple. Take five extra minutes per vehicle at storage set-down to double-check pad placement. It’s how the Sioux City shop stayed complaint-free through his first storage season.

Step Four: Manage Load Distribution Front-to-Back

Storage-duty automotive two post lifts hold vehicles that were originally positioned quickly during service. For long-term storage, take the extra step to center the vehicle’s balance point correctly on the arms. Asymmetric lifts want roughly 30 percent of the weight ahead of the columns and 70 percent behind. Symmetric lifts want the vehicle centered. Getting this wrong doesn’t cause an immediate problem, but it stresses the column and column base weld over four months of static load. That is not the kind of stress lifts were designed for, and it’s easy to avoid with a tape measure and a couple of extra minutes.

The Sioux City shop was running two asymmetric Rotary lifts and two older symmetric Challengers. We adjusted his storage protocol to match: asymmetric setup got the sports cars and cars with rearward weight bias; symmetric setup got the wagons and midsize sedans. That mapping meant no lift was seeing an off-design load through winter. Small planning detail, real safety benefit over a full storage season.

Step Five: Set a Mid-Winter Safety Check

Even with everything above done right, storage duty deserves one mid-season check. Around late January, walk the lot with a flashlight and look at each stored vehicle for any change from set-down: pad shifting, arm movement against the restraints, water pooling on the slab, or any visible cable relaxation. Ten minutes of walking gives you a chance to catch a problem before it turns into a claim. On the Sioux City visit last February we found one cable that had loosened enough to want re-tensioning, and we caught it before the spring rush.

This mid-winter check is honestly the difference between a well-run storage business and a lucky one. On automotive two post lifts holding customer cars, luck is not a plan. Any tire or alignment shop that’s added seasonal storage needs a written mid-season protocol posted on the office wall so any employee knows what to look for. When It’s Time to Replace, Not Repair

Some old lifts shouldn’t be pressed into storage service, and it’s our job to say so. If a lift has ratchet ladder damage inside the column, unrepaired frame welds, or missing safety documentation, the right move is retirement and replacement, not another season of use.
