A dealership service manager along the Iowa-Illinois corridor asked us a question last spring that most spec sheets don’t answer: which of the automotive two post lifts on the market actually leave enough room under a vehicle to drop a transmission without fighting the columns? He had four bays doing warranty driveline work, a transmission jack that needed a clear path, and technicians who were tired of walking around a base plate every time they rolled equipment in. That’s a dimensional question, a brand question, and a parts-availability question all at once. We spent an afternoon with a tape measure in his shop, and what follows is the technical breakdown we gave him.

The Dimensions That Actually Matter for Driveline Work

Forget capacity for a second. For transmission service, three measurements decide whether a bay works: maximum rise, drive-thru clearance, and overall column spread. Maximum rise on typical commercial two-post models runs from about 71 inches to 80 inches at the pad. That difference sounds small until a technician is on his back under a Silverado with a transmission jack. At 71 inches of rise on a truck with 10 inches of ground clearance, you’ve got roughly 81 inches to the underside — workable standing but tight. At 79 inches of rise you’re comfortably walking under and the jack has room to swing the case.

Drive-thru clearance is the gap between the columns at the narrowest point, and it’s where automotive two post lifts differ most. Standard commercial units land somewhere between 98 and 110 inches. Wide or extra-tall configurations push past 110. A transmission jack with a wide base plus a technician plus the vehicle door open is a real-world clearance problem, and a floorplate model adds a two-inch-tall channel across the bay that a jack wheel has to roll over. Overall footprint on most units is 140 to 156 inches wide overall and needs 24 to 30 inches of clearance behind each column for arm swing and service access. Measure the bay, not the lift.

Overhead Versus Baseplate When You’re Pulling Transmissions

This dealership had 14-foot ceilings, which meant overhead was on the table. For driveline work, overhead is usually the better answer and here’s the reasoning. The floor stays completely clear. No channel, no plate, no lip. A transmission jack, an oil drain, a hydraulic press cart — everything rolls straight through the bay without a bump. When you’re moving a 200-pound automatic transmission on casters, that flat floor is worth real money in reduced strain and reduced dropped-part incidents.

The tradeoff is vertical clearance. An overhead crossbeam typically sits at 12 to 13 feet depending on column height, and the shutoff bar hangs below that. If you service anything with a roof rack, a light bar, a cargo box, or a Sprinter-height van, overhead automotive two post lifts can become a limitation fast. This shop handles passenger cars and light trucks exclusively, so we went overhead with 12-foot columns. There’s no universally right answer — there’s a right answer for your ceiling and your vehicle mix. Symmetric, Asymmetric, and Why Door Swing Matters at a Dealership

Symmetric two-post designs place the columns directly across from each other with equal-length arms, centering the vehicle between them. Asymmetric designs rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees and use shorter front arms and longer rear arms, positioning the vehicle further back so the driver’s door clears the column. For a dealership doing high-volume in-and-out work, asymmetric is almost always the pick — techs get in and out of the cab dozens of times a day, and door dings on customer vehicles are an expensive problem.

For transmission work specifically, though, there’s a nuance. Asymmetric loading shifts more weight rearward, which is fine for front-engine passenger cars but requires more attention on a rear-heavy vehicle or one that’s been partially disassembled. When you pull a transmission and transfer case out of a truck, you remove several hundred pounds from the middle of the vehicle and change the balance. Technicians need to be trained on that. Many modern automotive two post lifts are versymmetric — the arms can be configured either way — which gives a dealership flexibility across the bay lineup. Brand History and Why It Predicts Parts Availability

Once a lift is installed, your relationship with it becomes a parts relationship. Cylinders are the item that generates the most anxiety and the longest lead times. We evaluate honestly — if the bore is scored, a reseal buys you six months and you’ll be back. Concrete, Anchors, and Installation in a Working Dealership

Most dealership service floors were poured to a decent spec, but “most” isn’t “all,” and additions built in different decades often have different slabs. Commercial two-post installation requires a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete for lighter units and more for higher capacities — many manufacturers now call for 4.25 to 6 inches depending on model and anchor pattern. Before we quote an install in an existing building, we verify slab thickness and check for post-tension cables or radiant heat tubing. Drilling into a radiant loop is a bad day for everyone.

Installation in a live dealership also means sequencing. We schedule one bay at a time, typically a single day per lift for a standard install, so the department keeps running. Anchors get set with a rotary hammer, torqued to manufacturer spec, then re-torqued after the first load cycles. Columns get shimmed plumb — and this is where corners get cut by cheap installers, because an out-of-plumb column puts side load on the carriage and eats slide blocks. We finish with a full commissioning: load test, latch check at every position, equalization verification, and a walkthrough with the technicians who’ll use it. Building a Bay Lineup That Still Works in Fifteen Years

The advice we gave this service manager was to stop thinking about individual lift purchases and start thinking about a bay lineup with a replacement cadence. If all four bays get the same model from the same manufacturer, you standardize your spare parts, your technicians learn one set of controls, and your annual inspection is faster. Stagger the purchases by a couple of years and you never face replacing four lifts in the same budget cycle.

He also asked whether the vehicle mix would change enough to obsolete his spec. Fair question — EVs are heavier, and battery packs change where you can put a pad.
