A collector in Urbandale called us in early spring about automotive two post lifts for a shop building he’d just finished — a clean pole barn with a poured slab, twelve-foot sidewalls, and six vehicles that all needed something. Two were driven weekly, two came out for summer, and two were long-term projects that hadn’t moved in a couple of years. He wanted to do his own oil changes, brakes, exhaust, and fluid work instead of hauling everything to a shop. What he didn’t have was a plan for where the columns went or how the bay would flow around them. We spent a year with that project, from install day through the first service call, and it taught us plenty worth passing on.

Why he chose a two-post over storage-first options

The first conversation was the important one. A collector’s instinct is often a four-post, because a four-post stores a car on top of another car and requires no anchoring drama. That’s a fine choice — we sell a lot of them for exactly that reason. But this owner’s list of jobs was maintenance, not storage: oil, brakes, suspension bushings, exhaust hangers, fuel lines on a car that had sat. Every one of those jobs wants the wheels hanging free and the underside wide open. On a four-post you’re working around runways and reaching over a rolling jack.

So we walked through the tradeoff honestly. He had enough floor area that he didn’t need to stack cars to fit them, and a separate lean-to handled winter storage. Once storage came off the requirement list, the decision got simple. Automotive two post lifts give you unobstructed wheel access, faster arm setup on a car you know, and a smaller footprint per bay. He landed on a 10,000 lb clearfloor unit — more capacity than his heaviest vehicle at around 5,500 pounds, but the extra margin means the machine loafs instead of working, and it covers whatever he buys next. Nobody has ever called us regretting that they bought a little more capacity than they needed that year.

Laying out the bay before anything got anchored

We chalked the whole thing on the floor before a drill touched concrete. Column locations, arm sweep at full extension, door swing on the widest vehicle, and the walking lane behind the columns. That chalk exercise moved the lift almost two feet from where he originally wanted it, because the original spot put a swung-out rear arm right in the path between the workbench and the overhead door.

The layout principles we use for a collector’s shop are different from a production bay. In a production shop you optimize for cycle time. In a collector’s shop you optimize for a single person working alone, often with a car up for days or weeks. That means the lift shouldn’t block circulation when a project sits raised. We put it in the center-rear of the building with clear passage on both sides, the workbench on the long wall within a few steps, and the parts washer and drain pan storage under the bench rather than in the open floor. Air drops went overhead on both sides so a hose reaches either end of the car without dragging. Lighting went on the walls at roughly seven feet in addition to overhead, because when a car is up on automotive two post lifts, the ceiling fixtures are shining on the roof of the car and not on the parts you’re touching.

Install day: what actually happened

The slab tested out fine — a good pour, well over the four-inch minimum, cured plenty long. That’s not always the case with newer pole buildings, where the shop area sometimes gets a thinner pour than the equipment bay needs. We hammer-tested at the exact column footprints and core-checked one spot to be certain.

Electrical was the hiccup. He had run a 220V circuit to the wall he’d originally planned on, and after the chalk layout moved the lift, the power unit column ended up on the wrong side. His electrician handled it inside a day, but that’s a full day of delay caused by ordering the layout backwards — power first, lift second.

Setting columns is straightforward when the prep is right. Anchor, shim to plumb, torque to spec, run the equalization cables, plumb the hydraulic line, fill and bleed, then cycle the lift empty a dozen times to work air out and confirm both carriages rise together. We loaded it with his heaviest vehicle, checked the locks engaged cleanly at every position, and re-verified plumb under load. Then we spent twenty minutes on the part most owners skip: showing him the actual lift points on each of his six vehicles, because unibody cars, a body-on-frame truck, and a vintage car with a boxed frame all get set up differently. Automotive two post lifts are only as safe as the pad placement, and that’s a training issue, not a hardware issue.

The first thirty days and the anchor re-torque

We tell every owner the same thing and half of them forget: re-torque the anchors at thirty days. Concrete relaxes around a wedge anchor, and the first weeks of cycling settle everything. He remembered, called us, and we swung by. Two anchors on one column had lost measurable torque — completely normal, completely fixable in five minutes with a torque wrench, and completely dangerous if left for three years.

The other thing that came up early was hydraulic fluid level. New installs consume a little fluid as the cylinder and hose fully purge, and the reservoir reads low after a few weeks. Topping it with the correct fluid — not whatever’s on the shelf — keeps the pump quiet and the seals happy. We also adjusted one arm restraint that wasn’t dropping into its gear cleanly. Minor stuff, all of it, but it’s the kind of minor stuff that becomes major stuff at month twenty-four if nobody looks. We put together a short laminated card for him: daily visual on cables and hose, monthly lock-latch test and fluid check, annual full inspection. He taped it to the column. How the workflow actually changed

By midsummer his working pattern had shifted in ways he hadn’t predicted. Jobs he used to put off — chasing an exhaust rattle, replacing a leaking valve cover gasket on a project car, pulling a fuel tank — became weekend jobs instead of shop appointments. Oil changes on six vehicles that used to be a scheduling headache turned into a Saturday morning. The lift stopped being a piece of equipment and became the center of how the building worked.

The unexpected win was diagnostics. Getting a car up to eye level and walking around it under good light finds things you never see from a creeper: a torn CV boot, a soft brake line, a rusted subframe bolt on a car that had sat outside for a decade before he bought it. He caught a failing rear trailing arm bushing on one car that would have been an ugly surprise on the interstate. The unexpected annoyance was floor discipline. Automotive two post lifts need clear space around them, and a collector’s shop naturally accumulates parts, tires, and half-finished assemblies. He ended up building a wheel rack on the far wall specifically to keep the lift perimeter clean. Small thing, big difference in how the bay feels.

What he’d do differently on a second bay

He asked us this in the fall, half seriously, because he’s already thinking about a second lift. Three things came up. First, run more electrical than you think you need, on both sides, before the concrete gets committed to anything. Circuits are cheap during construction and expensive afterward. Second, buy the accessories with the lift. Truck adapters, low-profile pad stacks, and a rolling bridge jack all ordered together arrive on one freight shipment and get set up on install day; ordered separately six months later they each carry their own shipping and their own delay.

Third — and this is the one most people underestimate — think harder about ceiling height. His twelve-foot sidewalls were fine for the clearfloor unit he bought, and with a car at full rise he still has room. But if he’d wanted an overhead-beam model, or if he ever buys something tall, that twelve feet becomes the ceiling on his ambitions in a literal sense. Advice for collectors weighing this decision

Start with the jobs, not the equipment. If your list is oil, brakes, suspension, exhaust, and wheels, a two-post is the right tool and it isn’t close. If your list is “park a car on top of a car through the winter,” look at four-posts or a storage-oriented setup instead. Plenty of collectors we work with eventually have one of each, and the order they buy them in usually depends on whether space or maintenance is the tighter constraint that year.

Then be honest about your building. Slab thickness and cure strength, actual clear ceiling height at the lowest point, available electrical service, and whether you have in-floor heat — that last one matters enormously, because drilling anchor holes through radiant tubing is a very bad afternoon. Get those four numbers before you shop, and any competent supplier can narrow the field for you in one phone call.
