Automotive two post lifts get bought on spec sheets and lost on loading docks. We hear it every spring from body shop foremen around Cedar Falls: the columns are ordered, the concrete is cured, the electrician is scheduled — and then a 53-foot dry van shows up at 7 a.m. with a driver who has no liftgate, no pallet jack, and forty minutes before his next stop. That crate weighs more than most of the cars in your production line. What Actually Shows Up On The Truck
A two-post shipment is not one box. On a typical 10,000 or 12,000 lb overhead model you get two column crates or a single banded column bundle, a carton or skid of arms, an overhead beam with the equalizer cable assembly, a hydraulic power unit in its own box, a hardware and anchor kit, and a small parts carton with the cables, hoses, and lock hardware. Combined weight on a 12K overhead runs in the 1,800 to 2,400 lb range. An 18,000 lb three-stage-arm model can push past 3,000 lb. Baseplate models trade the overhead beam for a floor plate that is awkward rather than heavy, and it is usually the piece that gets bent because someone drags it off the tailgate.
The single longest item is the column, and on tall-column configurations it can run past 12 feet. That matters twice: once when it comes off the trailer and again when it goes through your door. A body shop foreman we worked with in the Cedar Valley had a 14-foot overhead door and assumed clearance was a non-issue, then discovered his door track and a sprinkler main left him about 11 feet of usable path. We ended up walking the columns in on furniture dollies at a slight angle. Ten minutes of measuring beforehand would have made that a non-event, which is the whole point of thinking about freight before you think about paint color.
Liftgate, Dock, Or Forklift: Pick One Before You Order
Freight carriers deliver curbside on a standard rate. Anything else costs money and has to be arranged when the order is placed, not when the driver calls. You have three realistic options. If you have a loading dock at trailer height, you are done — the driver backs in and you pull the crates off with a pallet jack. If you have a forklift rated for the heaviest single piece, you meet the truck in the lot and set everything down on the apron. If you have neither, you buy liftgate service and accept that a liftgate has a weight limit, usually around 2,500 lb, and a small platform that a 12-foot column overhangs badly.
One caller told us his shop had “a forklift,” which turned out to be a 3,000 lb warehouse unit with short forks. It could lift the column bundle, but the load center was so far out that the machine got light in the back. We had him drop the bundle to the ground on the fork tips, then walk it in on rollers. Automotive two post lifts are not fragile, but a column that tips over on gravel can tweak a carriage track badly enough that you fight the lock ladder for the life of the equipment. Rate your forklift honestly and tell us the number — we would rather add liftgate service than replace a column.
Receiving The Shipment Without Eating The Damage
Inspect before you sign. That is the entire rule, and it is the one that saves body shops the most money. Once you sign a clean delivery receipt, a freight claim becomes an uphill argument regardless of who actually crushed the corner of the power unit box. Walk around the pallet. Photograph the crates on the trailer before anything moves. Look for punctured cardboard, oil on the deck, bent banding, and a power unit box that rattles. If anything looks wrong, write “damaged — subject to inspection” on the receipt and take pictures with the trailer number visible.
The parts that get damaged most often are the least obvious. Hydraulic hoses get kinked when the small carton is used as a step. The overhead beam gets a dented flange that later makes the equalizer sheave sit crooked. And on baseplate models the floor plate cover gets a curl that will not lie flat against the concrete. None of those stop you from stacking the columns, which is why they get discovered on install day instead of delivery day. Open every carton within 48 hours even if your install is three weeks out. Concealed damage claims get much harder past that window, and we would rather ship you a replacement hose now than have your alignment tech standing around waiting for one.
Automotive Two Post Lifts And Alignment-Ready Layout
Alignment work changes the layout math. A body shop doing collision repair needs the lift positioned so a rack, plates, or a mobile alignment system can actually reach the vehicle, and so the tech can get a headlamp aimer or a camera target in front of the car without moving it. That means more front clearance than a general service bay needs, and it means you should not shove the columns to the back wall just because the crates fit there. We generally want a minimum 12-foot bay width for a symmetric setup and 13 feet if you are running wide arms and doors that swing.
Asymmetric versus symmetric matters here too. Asymmetric columns rotate about 30 degrees and let the driver door open, which body shop techs love because they are in and out of the cabin constantly during a repair. Symmetric setups center the vehicle and handle trucks and vans better. For a Cedar Falls collision shop mixing sedans with three-quarter-ton pickups, we usually land on a versymmetric-style configuration that will do both, then set arm length so a long-wheelbase truck still gets picked up at the factory points. Automotive two post lifts do not have adjustable footprints after the anchors go in, so this is the conversation to have before the freight truck is dispatched, not after.
Concrete, Anchors, And The Slab Nobody Cored
Every manufacturer publishes a minimum slab spec, and for most 10K to 12K two-post models it is roughly four inches of 3,000 psi concrete, though several call for more and heavy-capacity models want six inches or a poured pad. Older Iowa shop floors are the wildcard. We have cored slabs that measured five inches at the door and three and a half inside the bay, because the original pour was done in two passes on uneven fill. A caller from northern Missouri told us his floor was “about five inches, maybe less,” which is an honest answer and exactly the reason to core it rather than guess.
If the slab is thin, you have real options and none of them are heroic. Cut and pour a pad under each column footprint, typically four by four feet, tie it in properly, and let it cure the full 28 days before anchoring. Or, if the building is new construction, tell your concrete contractor the lift footprint now and have them thicken the pour. What you should not do is anchor into thin concrete and hope. Anchor pullout is the failure mode that scares us most, because it happens under load with a vehicle up in the air. We would rather delay an install three weeks for a pad than get a call about a column that walked.
Install Day: Sequence, Power, And The Two-Person Rule
A clean two-post install runs about four to six hours for an experienced crew, longer if the electrical is not ready. Sequence matters. We lay out and chalk the footprint against the manufacturer drawing, drill and set anchors, stand and shim the columns plumb in both planes, set the overhead beam, route the equalizer cables and hydraulic lines, mount the power unit, fill and bleed the hydraulics, hang the arms, then run the lift through a dozen full cycles empty before a vehicle ever goes on it. Shimming is where shortcuts show up later as uneven lock engagement.
Power is the most common delay we see. Most single-phase power units want a dedicated 208-230V circuit — 30 amp is typical on 10K to 12K models — and a lot of shops discover the nearest outlet is a 120V duplex on a shared circuit. Get an electrician in before delivery. On three-phase shops, confirm rotation, because a reversed motor on a gear pump moves fluid the wrong direction and people assume the pump is bad. And genuinely, do not do this alone. Standing a 700 lb column is a two- or three-person job with a proper hoist or forklift. Budget The Whole Project, Not Just The Crate
The sticker on the equipment is maybe 70 percent of what you spend. Freight from the factory to eastern Iowa is real money and scales with capacity and column height. Liftgate service adds to it. Anchors, shims, and a concrete pad if you need one add more. Electrical runs a few hundred to a couple thousand depending on panel distance and whether you need a new breaker. Professional installation is worth budgeting even if you end up doing it yourself, because knowing the number lets you make an honest decision. In broad tiers, a quality 10K overhead lands in the entry commercial range, 12K to 15K models step up meaningfully, and 18K and heavier get into a different conversation entirely.
Where we push back on shops is buying capacity you will regret. A Cedar Falls body shop foreman told us 10,000 lb was plenty because his heaviest job was a half-ton pickup. Two years later the shop picked up fleet work on three-quarter-ton service trucks and he was renting time from a neighbor. Going from 10K to 12K is a modest premium at purchase and enormous flexibility later. That is the single most common regret we hear about automotive two post lifts, and it costs nothing to avoid at the quote stage.
