Configuration A: Symmetric Two-Post for a Mixed Fleet Bay

A symmetric two-post lift, arms roughly even front to back, is the workhorse choice when your bay handles a mix of pickups, vans, and the occasional sedan for brake service and rotor swaps. We spec these often for small fleets that don’t want to think too hard about vehicle positioning every time a truck rolls in. The arms swing out wide enough to clear doors, and the columns don’t crowd a technician trying to pull a caliper or drop a rotor off the hub.

The tradeoff with a symmetric configuration is door clearance on longer vehicles — you’re centering the car between the posts, which is great for balance but can pinch swing-out room in a tighter bay. For shops doing high-volume brake work where technicians are getting in and out of the cab constantly to move the vehicle or check a warning light, that extra swing room adds up over a full day of rotor swaps.

We see asymmetric two-post lifts used more in shops that also do some diagnostic or electrical work between brake jobs, since the tech doesn’t have to squeeze past a post every time they hop in to check a dash light. The capacity ranges overlap heavily with symmetric units — most fleets land in the same 9,000 to 12,000 pound range — so the decision usually comes down to bay layout and door clearance rather than lifting capacity. If your building has narrower stalls, asymmetric almost always wins.

Freight: What Actually Shows Up on the Truck

A set of automotive two post lifts doesn’t arrive as one box. You’re getting two columns, an overhead beam or cable system depending on the model, four arms, hydraulic hoses, a power unit, and a hardware crate — usually split across a couple of pallets weighing several hundred to a couple thousand pounds each. Freight companies deliver curbside by default, which means the driver is not obligated to carry anything into your building.

This is the single most common surprise call we get. A shop manager assumes a residential-style delivery and finds a semi in the parking lot with a liftgate and pallets on the ground. If you don’t have a loading dock, you need a forklift or pallet jack on site, or you need to arrange liftgate service with the freight carrier ahead of time. We ask this on every single quote call now: do you have a forklift on site, is there a dock, and is there a clear path from the drop zone to the bay. Getting this wrong doesn’t ruin the install, but it can turn a one-day job into a two-day job with a rental forklift bill nobody budgeted for.

Forklift Logistics for a Des Moines Metro Bay

Most of the shops we work with around Des Moines, Urbandale, Ankeny, and out toward Winterset don’t have a forklift sitting around, and that’s fine — we plan for it. If your shop doesn’t own one, renting a forklift for delivery day is usually cheaper than you’d think, and we can tell you the approximate weight and dimensions of each pallet ahead of time so the rental company sizes the right unit.

The other piece people miss: floor path and door width. We ask about door dimensions and clear floor path before we ever load the truck, because rescheduling a freight delivery after it’s already rolling is expensive and slow.

Concrete and Bay Readiness Before the Truck Arrives

Before we even talk freight, we need to know your concrete can handle it. Automotive two post lifts anchor into the slab, and older shop floors — especially ones poured decades ago for lighter-duty use — sometimes need reinforcement or a different anchor pattern to hit the pull-test numbers safely. We’d rather catch this on the phone during the quote call than after a truck full of steel is already sitting in your lot.

We also ask about ceiling height and overhead clearance, since a fixed-height two-post column needs enough room for the vehicle to rise fully for brake and rotor access. Most standard installations want at least 12 feet of ceiling clearance for a full-height two-post; low-rise or mid-rise options exist if your building is shorter, though you’ll trade some standing headroom under the vehicle. Getting this sorted before delivery day means the truck, the forklift, and our install crew are only there once.

Matching Capacity and Brand to Daily Brake Volume

For a fleet doing brake service and rotor swaps as a daily bread-and-butter task, we lean toward Rotary or Challenger commercial-grade automotive two post lifts because they’re built for the duty cycle — cycling up and down dozens of times a day, five or six days a week, without the arms or locks wearing out early. A home-garage-grade lift can technically hold the weight, but it wasn’t engineered for that kind of daily grind, and fleets that try to save money there usually end up calling us for arm or lock repairs within a year or two.

Capacity-wise, match the lift to your heaviest regular vehicle, not your average one. If your fleet occasionally runs a one-ton service truck through the bay even twice a week, spec for that weight rather than the lighter pickups you service most days. We’d rather quote you a slightly higher capacity two-post than have you underspec it and find out the hard way during a rotor swap on the one truck that’s heavier than the rest.
