Half-shaft and CV axle replacement is repetitive, high-volume work for a dealership service department, and it rewards clear floor access more than almost any other job we quote. Techs need to swing an impact gun, drop a subframe brace, or walk a shaft out at an angle, and a lift with a center column or a wide base in the wrong spot turns a 40-minute job into an hour of shuffling equipment. That’s why most of the dealership managers we talk to in eastern Nebraska specifically ask for asymmetric, clear-floor automotive two post lifts rated 9,000 to 12,000 lb, which covers everything from a half-ton crew cab to a light commercial van.

We’ve had customers describe their fleet mix on the phone before we’ve even quoted a lift, and the pattern repeats: mostly half-ton and 3/4-ton pickups, a few vans, occasionally something heavier like a one-ton dually. For a dealership in eastern Nebraska, that means someone has to be on-site during a delivery window, because most freight carriers won’t wait around while a service department finds a forklift operator. We ask every customer up front whether they have a forklift on site and whether there’s someone certified to run it, because that single detail changes the whole delivery plan.

The more common scenario is a flatbed pulling into a parking lot or side drive, and the columns and carriages coming off onto pavement or gravel before they ever reach the bay floor. This is where a rented forklift, a shop’s existing equipment, or our crew’s own gear becomes the deciding factor in how smoothly the day goes. We’ve had customers ask us to bring a forklift specifically because their skid loader has no forks, and we plan for that whenever a site visit or intake call tells us equipment is thin.

Once components are off the truck, they still need to travel from the drop point to the actual bay, sometimes through a service door that’s narrower than the crate. We measure door openings and travel paths as part of every quote for automotive two post lifts because a column that’s a half-inch too wide for a doorway is a problem nobody wants to discover mid-install. Staging matters too: laying components out in the order they’ll be assembled saves real time, especially on a two-lift job where techs need both bays back in service the same week.

Sizing Two Post Lifts for Mixed Dealership Fleets

Dealership service managers rarely lift just one type of vehicle. A shop doing CV axle work on daily-driver trade-ins might also see the occasional three-quarter-ton service truck or a delivery van with a raised roof. We generally recommend sizing automotive two post lifts to the heaviest realistic vehicle in rotation, plus a margin, rather than the average. We don’t push a bigger lift than the fleet needs, because floor space in a service department is worth more than an unused weight rating.

Concrete, Anchoring, and What We Check Before We Bolt Down

Every two post lift install starts with the floor, not the equipment. We ask about slab thickness, rebar, and age before we ever schedule a crew, because anchoring a 10,000 to 15,000 lb lift into cracked or under-spec concrete is a liability nobody should accept. Most dealership builds from the last two decades meet the 4 to 6 inch reinforced standard we look for, but older service departments sometimes have thinner slabs poured for lighter equipment. When that’s the case, we talk through options rather than forcing an install that won’t hold long-term.

We also check for in-floor heat lines and existing anchor points from a prior lift, since some dealerships are replacing an older two post lift rather than installing into open floor. Removing an old lift, especially one that’s been bolted down for years, takes its own planning around forklift access and disposal, and we build that into the timeline separately from the new install so nothing gets rushed on install day.

Scheduling Around a Working Service Department

A dealership can’t shut down for a week while we install automotive two post lifts, so scheduling has to work around active bays. We coordinate delivery and forklift logistics to land on the same day or two as our install crew whenever possible, which minimizes the window where components are sitting exposed in a bay or parking lot.
